I am not a Nirvana fan. At all. But, I do acknowledge their contribution to music. I just got really tired of all these 19 year olds spewing forth their "My life sucks, my parents don't understand me" bullshit really quick, the same way that people got tired of "hair" metal sounding cookie cutter.

Music post-Nirvana may be more interesting, but from a strict musical standpoint, the players that were playing the "hair" metal kicked the grunge-players' asses right off the planet.

And Alice In Chains was the best band to come out of Seattle, EVER.

And Andy Wood was never in Green River. He was in Lords Of The Wasteland, later renamed Mother Love Bone. Mark Arm (Mudhoney) was the vocalist of Green River.

Nirvana was simply awesome! Grunge is like supercool and tapped in to my dark brooding side of my psyche. tottaly R.A>D! On bad note, led to death of hair bands, why couldn't they coexist? I guess like oil and water > bighair is happy times, grunge is depressive. love both but guess one must go to leave room for another. :(
anyway
KURT ruled!

ALICE IN CHAINS came first though. what do you think about them? they hit scene 4 or 5 years before nirvana (my recollection)

Without a doubt there are way better musicians from the 80's hair metal days... Kurt was deffinately not one of the best guitar players.. looking at it from a technical standpoint you could flat out say he sucked... but They didn't wanna be awesome musicians,, they didn't wanna be part of that superstar bullshit... they exsisted on a different reality.. a reality that you dont have to be a polished shlock rock band to get it done.. They wanted to tear shit apart and I thing that is exactly what they did..

Just like when we started Broken Neck back in '99.. we were heavy, nothing like Nirvana.. but we sorta had the same idea.. Broken Neck wanted to scare everyone out of the bar.. we literally wanted to play the heaviest shittiest noise you could possibly hear so everyone would get up and leave.. we wanted it to be a joke, and be opposite to what good cover bands where doing around here at the time.. It just so turned out that a lot of people liked it...

In my opinion if some of Nirvana's songs would come out right now... they would still be as kickass as they were then...

I agree that Alice In Chains was the best Seattle band, they are one of my all time favorites. And Andrew Wood was in Malfunkshun. Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament were in Green River. We all know where they ended up.

Either way, it was Green River + Malfunkshun = Mother love bone (Star Dog Champion was a great album); just like Temple of the dog = Pearl Jam + the best line up for Soundgarden. Nirvana came after the fact and just got more popular, like Pearl Jam did. Alice In Chains should have got more ..

As for Hair bands, they produced some of the best guitar players I have ever heard. Then you can say that about any type of genre ...

I agree about Mother Love Bone. I have the Apple CD, it's still one of the most complete albums I've ever listened to. It ranges from the straight ass-kicking ("Captain Hi-Top", "This Is Shangri-La") to the absolutely beautiful ("Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns"), and Andy Woods' voice at times just makes me want to cry, it's so amazing. That was one unbelievable band.

I enjoyed Soundgarden (especially the "Louder Than Love" album), thought that Pearl Jam's "10" was one of the best all-time records, but man, AIC just took it to another level. Grunge music was supposed to be dark, but AIC completely nailed it, both with "Facelift" and "Dirt". They had power, a great grooving rhythm section, unbelievable guitar sounds (Jerry Cantrell is still way under-rated, in my opinion), and the best vocals in grunge, thanks to Layne Staley. Pound-for-pound, one of the best all-time bands, and far and away the best of the Seattle "Big 4". (AIC, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden.)

Screaming Trees and Mudhoney were overshadowed by the grunge explosion, and they should not have been. I think Sonic Youth falls in that category too.

Sonic Youth came more from the no wave scene out of New York. I think that they were more "artsy" than the typical grunge band. I'm still blown away by all of the sounds that Thurston Moore can pull out of a guitar. You know that cat sat around in the studio playing with every stompbox and amp setting he could think of. I prefer it when he sings though, because I can't handle Kim Gordan's vocals for very long. Kevin Shields from My Bloody Valentine is another player like that.

I agree 100% about AIC. That was a band that was a one of a kind. I've still yet to hear a band do a cover of Man in the Box that comes very close to the original. Layne and Jerry just had the perfect vocal hamonies with those dissonant intervals that they used. It sounds like Layne overdubbed his voice a lot on the recordings, so I don't know how it would have sounded live; the albums were perfect though. I love Jerry Cantrell's playing.

Another band that came out at the time and didn't get the recognition that they deserved (I know Dave will agree with me on this) was I Mother Earth. They were definitely ahead of their contemporaries in terms of musicianship and songwriting. Their first album, Dig, had them obviously wearing their influences on their sleeves (SRV, Santana, Zepplin), but they really found their voice with Scenery and Fish. That album's just perfectly produced. It's one of those albums you have to listen to a few times to "get it," but once you do, you'll realize that it was worth all of the effort.

Oh yeah, here's another lesser known grunge band that many people may have forgotten about: Gruntruck.

The guitarist was and still is in a band called The Accused.
And Gruntruck used to be Skin Yard with Jack Endino.

Cheers!

YES! All hail Jag Tanna! Incredible technique with a raw sound and knowing when and when not play. Like a second coming of RUSH.
I'd like to see them get back together with Edwin (That Brian guy just
didn't have as good a vibe on the last album). The Tanna bros. seem to
have dropped off the planet. Bruce Gordon has some project(s) going
and Edwin just put out a solo album (Brian Byrne also has a solo album.
Not so good).

I missed seeing them at a festival in Ottawa a few years ago then after
they played at Crowbar (Scenery and Fish tour). Our sitter fell through
so I sent the (Now) ex-wife and a friend of hers. STUPID, STUPID,
STUPID!

Have to check out Gruntruck. Not familiar. Dig the whole genre so
could be a cool find. Thanks Paul.

Like I said, I'm a big Screaming Trees fan. I believe they were the first
of the "Seattle" bands to have some decent success. Saw them at
Crowbar. One of the best shows I've ever seen.

For anyone who likes the "Grunge" thing and isn't familiar, they're also
worth checking out.

Nirvana - cool, mostly cuz they were different and had great hooks, but Kurt Kaboom, "voice of a generation"? please.....

I really can't say who I like more:

1) Pearl Jam (Ten is one of the 5 or 10 best albums of all time, imo - tho the later stuff never measured up - but what could??)

2) Soundgarden - Cornell is the best vocalist and songwriter of the whole "grunge" scene

3) AiC - so totally cool in virtually every way (well, maybe except the drug-induced death of Layne.....)

all three are utterly amazing bands.... and blow Nirvana out of the fucking water. Nirvana is important, and cool to a degree, but they CANNOT TOUCH these 3 in terms of quality of musicianship, songwriting, etc.

Mother Love Bone rocks! But I don't consider them a grunge band. Just cuz they're from Seattle doesn't qualify as them "grunge". They were fairly glammy (tho not in an LA kind of way). Maybe "flamboyant". I don't know - just never saw them as "grunge."

Toona - Captain Hi-Top, the love commander, hide your mom, control your sista!! Yeah!!

LOVE that tune.... :P

I drove all the way to Jaxx in VA for the chance to meet CC back in 2000. He didn't disappoint and it's prob my most memorable meeting I've ever had.

Little known fact... CC is actually classically trained.

Didn't he go to Julliard? CC seems like a cool cat. He doesn't take himself too seriously, which is something that I think a lot of musicians need to do.

Nirvana was a break-thru trend-changing band. I'll never forget seeing their "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video for the first time in '91. Great dynamics & emotion. I was like - I like this. It may be called grunge or alternative but it's great rock & roll, sloppy or not. I became a fan & proceeded to get each of their releases as they came out. Cobain was a troubled soul & a genius. He must have been in so much pain to do that. And what great drumming & energy they had. I wish that they were still together. Many bands say that Nirvana put them into early retirement. I think anybody would want to be in the band that did that. That's huge. Nirvana - for whatever reason you prefer - unforgettable.
I am Klamachpin - the quiet one.

Given age & circumstances, it was only for a semester or two at NYU...according to Wikipedia:

"DeVille began studying music theory at New York University, but never completed his studies. Instead, he moved to Los Angeles in 1981 and played in various bands, including Screaming Mimi, Lace Slip, St James and Roxx Regime (which later changed their name to Stryper), before auditioning for Poison."
