No shit! What's the deal with musicians spewing their ideas / opinions on politics any chance they get just because they think they have the right to and that everyone owe's them an ear to listen?Merge wrote:I bet Cornell got tired of Morello's political rants, and I can't say that I don't blame him. Shut up and play the guitar, Tom!!

Check
Check out RATM's version of "Maggies Farm" if you ever get the chance.
Also people who have ideas and opinions like to share them. They feel like they might be helping to bring change for something they feel strongly about.
I guess those with an opinion and those without an opinion are pretty much the same except one has something to say and one does not.
Believe it or not some people care about things! Go figure!

Never liked them myself, for musical as well as political reasons. I had to sit through their act one time at a Lollapalooza while Zach chastized the audience for supporting the show (what!?!) & generally proceeded to tell us all the right ways to spend our money, live our lives etc. I always find it funny when rebellious extremists criticize religious figures and then essentially turn around and behave in exactly the same manner (hypocrisy, anyone?). BTW, making your instrument sound like a kazoo and then flicking the toggle switch back & forth does not make you a musical genius (i'd rather just hear the kazoo).Mikey Wax wrote:...I'll get bashed, but I dislike RAGE.

Well said.
I like Rage, like AudioSlave, like Cornell's solo stuff. Only problem with both
bands was that Tom Morello needed to learn more than one lead part.

what makes Rage Against the Machine any different than these Country Music acts that sing about the same 3 things 1) The War 2) Country Life and 3) Dale Earnhardt... in case to number 1... they're always singing in support of the war, and the troops -- and that's all well and good because it's their right and people like it... hey guess what, Rage Against the Machine was doing the exact same thing.. only in their case it was a lot more extreme, and it was for totally different reasons... but why is that so wrong to you?
Are you going to stand up and say you disagree with the punk rock movement of the 70s and 80s? Are you going to say that Black Flag made no contribution to music or life (they may have made more to life than music) because of their political stances? Just because somebody is radical, or fanatical in their beliefs... does not mean they have any less right to speak their mind than somebody who is nothing more than a rubber stamp for continuity and closed mindedness...
de La Rocha may have chastised the audience at Lolapalooza... but people paid to be chastised. What's the difference between Zach de La Rocha chastising you at Lolapalooza, and Joel Osteen or Jerry Falwell chastising you at a televevangelist broadcast from BJC? What's the difference between Henry Rollins screaming for change, and Toby Keith singing about the war? Not a god damn thing.. it's just that you're too closed minded and conservative to see both ways... they have the right... that's the greatest thing about America...
aside from that political nonsense... besides "Cochise" and "Like a Stone"... I wasn't big on Audioslave... despite my loving Soundgarden and RATM...
meh go figure

Re: Check
I've been listening to the RATM live CD the past couple days. I never quite understood the "this song is not complete without a tom morello solo that sounds like someone drop kicking a nintendo" mentality. Allmost all the solos on the live album are pretty bad. If you listen to the CDs there's a few gems in there though.VENTGtr wrote:Well said.

You should ask yourself something though....
Do you really want to go through the shame associated with losing at air hockey again?

I had you beat... if Dusty hadn't held my right arm from me I would have beaten you by 1... instead you scored that goal which lead to you coming from 3 behind to beat me...Mikey Wax wrote: Do you really want to go through the shame associated with losing at air hockey again?

Loved RATM. Loved Soungarden. Thought that Audioslave was good (though not as great as the other two bands).
I personally like Tom Morello's guitar playing. At least it isn't (you know what I'm going to say here!): useless cliche pentatonic bullshit played by a million other rock guitarists.

"He's the electric horseman, you better back off!" - old sKool making a reference to the culturally relevant 1979 film.
I think Tom Morello's guitar playing is pretty mind blowing on first listen, but he's been on the scene for 15 years and I don't think he's changed it up much. I like the solos he does, sometimes. I just don't understand why every song that he does has to have one. I'd be very interesting in hearing a new RATM album, and see if he's learned a few new tricks playing with Audioslave.
Stand back, I like to rock out.
Ya, I like that what he does is different/unique/original, I just think it too
often ends up, essentially, being the same thing too often. Rather than
something musical, or even noise that has an effect, it's just "Yep, heard that the last song". There are a few places where he does
something other, it just seems too far and few between to me.
I'd like to see him just remove the delay and octave divider from time-to-time (As far as "modern" guys who use effects extensively, different modes,
etc. the guy in Incubus does some cool stuff. Don't know his name, but I
like his work).
Morello DOES come up with some cool riffs in an age where you don't hear
many cool riffs though. That goes for both RATM and AudioSlave.
NOTE: Until we make room in the basement, my son's air hockey table is
set up in our living room.

"...what makes Rage Against the Machine any different than these Country Music acts that sing about the same 3 things 1) The War 2) Country Life and 3) Dale Earnhardt..."
Uhh.. that's my point...nothing.
"...What's the difference between Zach de La Rocha chastising you at Lolapalooza, and Joel Osteen or Jerry Falwell chastising you at a televevangelist broadcast from BJC?..."
Once again, no difference. I pretty much do hold Jerry Falwell & Zach de La Rocha in the same class.
"... it's just that you're too closed minded and conservative to see both ways... "
How the hell would you know what I am? Obviously you've made some major assumptions here, Crusader. You seem to think I'm all pro Toby Keef, Jerry Falwell, etc. Well hey guess what, I certainly approve of the fact that in this country you have the right to say whatever you want, and to make an ass of yourself however you may see fit, Zach de La Rocha, Toby Keith, or yourself included. I also feel that I have the right to point out the hypocrisy of a closed minded asshole like Zach telling me what to support (I was at the show, they were on the show) & generally assuming that he knows what is "best" for everyone.
"... they have the right... that's the greatest thing about America..."
Agreed.

I hadn't noticed extensive use of an octave divider. Most RATM songs have identical bass and guitar parts, with a lot of distorted bass. In fact I've often wondered who wrote the bulk of the songs. Mostly they sound more like bass lines than guitar parts to me.VENTGtr wrote:I'd like to see him just remove the delay and octave divider from time-to-time
