That's Geri (Fries) Guyer.... I've known her for awhile. She CAN sing. According to people that were there at the time of Hollywood Week, Simon was in a piss-poor mood to start the day... so he cut the entire first group to make a statement.
I think it's still deserves credit that she made it even that far.

During the first cut of Hollywood week, they only gave each contestent 30 seconds to sing a cappella in front of everybody. That is difficult under normal circumstances let alone being nervous and knowing you are being televised.
I noticed that some of the judges' favorites from the first auditions were cut immediately.

BIG TIME! To even get to go to Hollywood is a win itself, When 10,000 try out and you atleast get noticed enough to make the next step she deserves allot of credit. And should be enough inspiration to try next year too. You don't have to win to become famous. About everyone that makes the top 10 has had a change of life.....Allot that didn't win have sold more records than the winners of past shows (except for Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood)

I'm with Toona on this one. Idol is all about vocal calisthenics and bombast over substance and texture. Everybody sounds like Stevie Wonder or Whitney Houston to me... how many notes can I bend out of this one syllable. It's judged by a woman whose voiced was "sweetened" by another singer on pretty much every record she had, a JACKSON, and the bitchy pillow-biter who gave us the Spice Girls. The Spice Girls. Think about that. Which one was "Talented Spice?"
I'm certain that many really good singers have been roasted on a spit by such excuses for "judges."----------->JMS
It really doesn't matter to me whether AI is legit or not. The winners' recording careers last what on average? Two years tops. Honest music has longevity. Throwaway music like the psuedo-R&B that AI peddles becomes the butt of jokes when VH1 does its "Remember the 2000s" episode series.

I generally don't reply but today, I just feel like it.
I don't like American Idol all that much, but hey let's face it, it keeps kids interested in music (and yes, it is music... when else will a kid be exposed to classics by Elvis or Cash or Stevie Wonder). As a teacher, I see how schools are getting rid of or gradually downgrading the role of music in a kid's life. American Idol at least keeps it afloat. The judging and everything is always BS but every so often comes an artist who might actually have longevity - ala Kelly Clarkson (hell of a voice even when she isn't doing vocal acrobatics) and Carrie Underwood for the Country world. The others have just faded... doomed to casting on the Surreal Life or something.
In any case, it's gotta feel good to have at least one song out for the nation to hear, not just a regional familiarity. Thats more than any of us will probably see in our lifetime with our music... but we enjoy it, so we keep on doing it. One song, though, could keep my family eating and under shelter for the rest of our lives. Good job to any of the contestants who can at least achieve that. It pays to have great marketing and record exec big wigs in your corner. They just found an easier route to get them.
I've always had something to say on these threads, but never feel like it... in fear of those of us who aren't tolerant of outside opinions or thoughts outside a comfortable genre of music. Now I'll just sit back and wait for it! HA!
Happy mosh pitting!
