Whatcha Listening To?
Whatcha Listening To?
It's Monday night, and after my week of vacation, I'm in the Q94 production room getting caught up on typing the public service announcements...which means there are CD's in the player. As I went nuts and blew a wad of dough at the Virgin Records Superstore at Downtown Disney last week, I'm listening to an eclectic range of stuff this night...
KILLSWITCH ENGAGE - As Daylight Dies The lone new (current) album I bought at Virgin, I thought I'd give the new Killswitch a try, after hearing some good reviews about the album. This album has its moments. A few tracks grabbed my attention on first listen, particularly "Unbroken" and "Break the Silence." Overall, good, aggressive Pantera-ish metal; I expect it to grow on me with repeated listens.
THE ANGELS - RED BACK FEVER I'm a big Angels/Angel City fan, so when I saw this Australian import CD in the budget bin for $8.99, it was a no-brainer! From 1991, this album is consistent with the rest of the Angels/Angel City library; hard-driving, AC/DC-like rock with a slight punk bite. The group includes a rockabilly flavor on "Some Of That Love," and also provides one of the more unusual takes on "Once Bitten Twice Shy" I've heard. Overall, strong album, fans of this band should like it.
RORY GALLAGHER - IRISH TOUR This was also in the budget bin at Virgin, so I grabbed it. From 1974, this is actually a pretty significant live album. In the early 70's, when Northern Ireland was suffering from violence and turmoil, very few rock artists would risk touring there because of violence between rival fans. But Irish blues-rock legend Rory Gallagher not only performed there, but was one of few performers that could unite the rival factions with his music. Irish Tour captures footage from several Northern Ireland concerts. This is all good stuff, with Rory and his band tearing it up on his own numbers and remakes of tunes from Muddy Waters, Tony Joe White and others. "A Million Miles Away" and "Walk On Hot Coals" are especially great. I'll be playing some of this on Q94's "Closet Chronicles" very, very soon. This is a good introduction to Rory Gallagher and the type of stuff this late performer could do on the live stage at his peak.
That's what I'm listening to this night. What's in your player?

Today, I listened to Good Monsters by Jars of Clay. It's a great release from them. Pretty complex, tonal stuff from Jars' on that disc. I like it.
Then, in light of the Dixie Chicks winning those Grammy's I listened to their album, Taking The Long Way, which I have appreciated since it was released.
This passed weekend, I was in a metal mood (not a Pat Boone reference) and I dug out "A Taste for The Perverse" by Souls At Zero and Chaos A.D. (influenced by my Scream Drummer YouTube post last week) & Roots by Sepultura. Great stuff.

Today, I picked up Unearth's III: In the Eyes of Fire. I've only had a chance to listen to about half of it so far because I've been working on a school paper, but I'll be listening to it in it when I go to bed. So far, I really dig it. It has a very raw production sound, but it doesn't have a "demo quality" to it.
Last week, I picked up Disturbed's Believe. I really dig it too. I know that a lot of people here don't dig Disturbed, but I think that they are highly underrated as musicians. Their music has a lot of rythmnic complexity to it, which I like.
I've also been listening to Incubus's S.C.I.E.N.C.E. It's a lot different than their newer stuff that's more mainstream.

I Mother Earth - Scenery and Fish Not much can be said about this
album except that it's PERFECT!
Our Lady Peace - Live They have so many cool tunes and this is a
long album so you get to hear how they handle them live. Love live
albums.
Two of the bests bands in the world and both Canadian. Least...HOPE
I.M.E. is still a band. Never really hear.
Rory Gallagher is INCREDIBLE. PLUS, he played the second
coolest lookin' start ever (First is the one Hendrix burned, Zappa
used, and Dweezil now owns).
King's X is ALWAYS great and "Gretchen" is their best.

King's X is probably my favorite "rock" band ever.
They have everything I like.
Soulful lead vocals, great harmonies, great groove and feel.
This band should have been huge.
They have/had more talent than almost all of their contemporaries.
For some reason they didn't seem to get past the "Christian band" label and that sucks.

There's a Christian Rock station somewhere on the dial that I really like. I'll
catch it late at night after a show or after running around booking, etc.
To be perfectly honest, it seems like the bands they play are less constricted
by music industry "rules" and are often more creative (Whereas as "secular"
bands that are good end up being indy or smaller label nowadays).
Even King's X was on MegaForce, which was a smaller label. Apparently, they weren't "Christian" enough for that scene anyway.
All of their side projects have been really good as well. Jerry Gaskill's new
album has some great stuff.

With their big night at the Grammys, I listened to "Taking The Long Way" by the Dixie Chicks, which reminded me why I liked it so much.
I have a 5-disc CD changer - it's not much as systems go, but it serves it's purpose!
I'm being happily re-acquainted with 2 I'd last heard in totality what seems like a lifetime ago:
1."Demons & Wizards"
2."The Magician's Birthday"
The former and latter by: Uriah Heep.
3. "In A Perfect World" - Aquarium Rescue Unit
4. "Rust In Peace" - Megadeth
5. A Phish compilation
Also, numerous great compilation cassettes while in my car. (Don't tell RIAA!

Here's what's been in my player or computer lately (I've been in a rather metal mood since losing my job):
"Those Once Loyal" - Bolt Thrower
"Pitch Black Effects" - Callenish Circle
"Ogre Tones" - King's X (yup, another one!)
"Doomsday Machine" - Arch Enemy
"Chaosphere" - Meshuggah
"XIII" - Mushroomhead
"Mer De Noms" - A Perfect Circle
Sorry, gotta do it...
Kidding Keith, but I didn't know you were a closet southern rocker!

Beatles "Love" : Im not a huge Beatles fan, but this is really cool. George Martin and son have remixed and remastered the most popular songs into these completely new tunes. The sound quality is amazing compared to the originals. My favorites were "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Eleanor Rigby" but i guess i liked both of those before they were redone.
Blue October "Foiled" : I guess its like alternative rock, but whatever it is I actually like it. The sound quality is great. My brother gave me this cd, and i thank him for it.
Poison The Well "Tear from the Red" : A lot of people tell me they consider this a definitive "metalcore" album. I just started listening to it today so I really haven't come to a personal conclusion yet. Pretty good tho so far. I haven't really listened to these guys much before, so I don't know what to expect.
Architect "All is Not Lost" : I do not like this, the few songs that i listened to on it, nothing really that exciting to me. Something about this being really uber compressed in mastering that makes it almost difficult to listen to at times.
Killswitch Engage "As Daylight Dies" : A lot of people talked this one up too. It's good but I don't personally feel that it is really that much better than their last album, it really to me just sounds like a continuation. Sure there are some really cool and interesting things on here, but i wasn't as blown away as I expected to be.

I have been listening to a new band called Decemberadio. Check these guys out. They currently have two hit songs out - Drifter and Love Found Me.
They sound different on every song - from easy to hard alternative to southern blues rock. You can hear some cuts on their website here. This band has been nominated for lots of awards and are getting much critical praise. Rolling Stone Magazine picked them as a band to watch.

I also have been listening to Billy Idol's Greatest Hits.
