I can't believe that the Altoona Area and Bellwood-Antis School Districts were running on 2-hour delay this morning (Friday)...WHY!!!???
I could understand the school districts up the mountain going on delay, because they likely received more snow and have the winds and white-out stuff to deal with. But here in the valley, we got maybe an inch of snow; but the roads were in fine shape. Yes, it's frigid. So what?
At the expense of sounding like a bitching old-timer here, I remember standing at the bus stop in ice storms, heavy snows and subzero freezing temperatures to go to school. These days, a snowflake hits the ground or the temperature dips below 20, and it's a two-hour delay! Probably some lawyer told the school districts they could get sued if Junior gets frostbite while waiting for the bus...

im not sure if this is true or not, but i think i remember hearing when i was in high school that if kids had to stand at a bus stop with the temperature staying below 21 degrees, that the district was supposed to put the school on delay till their was an increase in temperature...
I could be very wrong but i somewhere recall hearing that...

I'll jump on the "old timers band wagon", JP. They announced the delay at my 15-year-old daughter's school (Juniata Valley) YESTERDAY over the loud speaker before they even left school for the day! WTF?!?Jim Price wrote:I can't believe that the Altoona Area and Bellwood-Antis School Districts were running on 2-hour delay this morning (Friday)...WHY!!!???

It's cold. Put on a coat, hat, gloves and a scarf.

no justin, this is accurate... but it's 20... but if the temp isn't supposed to get above 20 during the course of the day... they still go.. which makes zero sense..JustinGelvin wrote:im not sure if this is true or not, but i think i remember hearing when i was in high school that if kids had to stand at a bus stop with the temperature staying below 21 degrees, that the district was supposed to put the school on delay till their was an increase in temperature...

but honestly people, wtf? the reel feel temperature was minus 4 this morning down here.. im sure it was worse up there - some schools have children walk.. some are in the country where kids could stand in the cold for 25 minutes if the bus driver is having a bad day -- it's just a simple issue of being safe rather than being sorry..

Yeah, I'm also in the "old timer" category. I remember having to tough it out through some hellish winters waiting at the bus stop. We're talking wearing a ski mask, long johns, the whole nine yards. There used to be much more snow too - up past the knees nearly to the waist! But now I think it gets tougher dealing with harsh weather of any extreme as you get older. You just gotta continue to tough it out & wait for it to get better.
I don't see anything wrong with exercising caution for this kids though. Any extreme weather is dangerous! From what I gather, another ice age is ever so slowly developing due to various reasons, some natural, some manmade. It may be even colder than we realize. That movie "The Day After Tomorrow" freaked me out. Keep 'em safe. Right now it's not fit for man nor beast outside!!!!

I've drank enough beer to float a battleship! Go ahead and Rock & Roll all night if you can but don't party every day!

Must not be many peeps here who ski or board. Pretty excellent weather for that!
On a side note, how's this for a demonstration of idiocy? After getting home dead tired from a night at Blue Knob last night, I considered leaving my ski gear in the car overnight. But I dragged it inside anyway, figuring it was too cold to let it stay there. Note to self: skis don't mind cold weather. Duh.

Ole schooler here. I lived on a dirt road with a very steep hill about 1 mile from home and the road often went unplowed. Often the bus could not make it up the hill, and he would let us out, and we had to walk the mile home.
And if anyone thinks that there used to be more snow, I have a picture of a blizzard, where the drifts went over our house, and only about the top 3 feet of the telephone poles stuck out. The camera dated the pics, and it was 1964. We had dug a very cool tunnel/cave in the big drift over the house.

It's January. You live in Pennsylvania. What the fuck do you expect???
Then I throw a snowball at them, flip them off, and go back in the house.
