Rockpage "Rock For The Troops" ***Please Read This

Post by Hawk »

EDIT : 1/30/07

Because some people didn't understand the concept........

Every band plays Their Own Gig . We just record it. You get PAID like you usually do. You do not play for nothing ! This is a WIN WIN situation for everyone involved.

We will be in touch with volunteers soon ! Thank you !

**********************************************************

I talked to Mike (mjb) last night. We hashed out a bunch of ideas and boiled it down to this. Mostly a compilation of every one's posts.

Not one band will have to play a free benefit gig ! At least not yet.

We would like to do this along with Rockpage, so we need Ron and Jim's permission . Guys ?

We would like to organize two or three "Official Rockpage Rock The Troops" "Crews". Each Crew would consist of three or four people. Each crew must have a digital video camera.

The crew would be made up of an announcer (JP ? Kevin ? or anyone willing to step up to the mic) . A videographer (or two), and a money collector. Money collected will be counted and the total announced at the end of each band's gig.

We DON"T want people just throwing together their own Rockpage crew. Because by keeping it OFFICIAL we also keep it LEGITIMATE.

Then we would like each band to have their own official "Rockpage Rock The Troops" night. Prearranged with us. Then we'll have a "crew" at your gig.

The announcer can also to small interviews with crowd members and the band members.

We want you to (often) play directly to the camera. Saying hi to the troops, wishing them well etc. . We will video the band, and the crowd. We will give everyone a chance to say something personal to the troops, bands and individuals alike. I'm sure the troops would enjoy seeing some guys and girls looking into the camera and saying "We're thinking of you".

The announcer will also let people we're taking up a collection in the name of "Rockpage Rocks For The Troops".

We'd like to establish a contest among the bands to see who can collect the most money ! Challenge each other ! We'll figure out some kind of a prize for first, second and third place !

The money collected will go towards editing (can anyone do this) the videos to DVDs. Then we will produce as many DVDs as possible to be distributed to the troops. Preferably (but not necessarily) troops from central PA.

All excess money (I hope a fair amount) will go to buying phone cards (a valued commodity in Iraq) so the troops can call home.

We'll also need a banner for each "crew" to carry with them, for people to sign .

If we get good support from YOU we will consider doing a summer outdoor event.

Everything will be promoted as best as we can come up with. Perhaps some of you (Tim Kelly ?) are good at promoting.

N...O...W We Need You !

We need as many bands as possible to volunteer.

We need volunteers for the "official crews".

Step up to the plate, let's show the troops fighting for OUR FREEDOM that WE CARE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK.........LET'S ROCK !

I think in lieu of the annual "Rockpage Benefit Jam" we have been doing the past few Januarys, this would be a great idea for this year. If Ron's cool with it, I'm for Rockpage being behind this as well.

Needless to say, keep me posted on the details as it all comes together; I'll use my various avenues of communication to get the word out about this (Q94, Pennsylvania Musician, Myspace, etc.).

Very Cool Jim ! Thanks.
Ron, I hope you can get behind us . Because I don't know what your liabilities (for you and Rpage) are connected to your permission. None I hope.

Hawk, this is a great idea. Kudos to you for the work that you are doing. I'd be willing to help out as an announcer, I just need to make sure that everything jives with my schedule. I can pretty much guarantee that Scream would be down with it, we wholeheartedly support our military bretheren. PM me with your phone number and I'll give you a call and we can get together and chat. Also, I may have a willing participant for video editing and DVD creation.

Hawk, I agree with Kevin. This is an excellent idea. I'm glad to see that you guys are running with it.

Nice idea! It also sounds like a lot of fun for the bands and audiences.

Another possibility for the video is to host it on Rockpage, for the benefit of troops who have internet access but not one of the DVDs. Compressed down to a YouTube-like small segments to make the most of their limited time and/or bandwidth.

this is great. sounds great i' m def in. i have a JVC hard disc drive cam corder, its not a top of the line but its decent. the light ing seems to have to be pretty good for good movies. like i said its a JVC model is an EVERIO, like all my electronic equipment, i buy it and never really figure out how to work them. for some reason i feel the need to keep up with stuff kinda but lack the attention span to relly figure it out. anyway..... i remember tho its not the best if you want to do alot of editing. so i don't know if it would be a good tool or not. does anybody know about this model. i'll try to read the book but like i said A.D.D.

good deal having JP on board. gives the whole thing some legitamacy in my eyes anyway. thankyou JP

hawk you just let me know how and what you need from me. still alot of stuff to figure out, but i think we're off to a good start. thanks all, this is really cool.

Yeah, this is a really good new idea.

I am always concerned when I see the "O" word (official) being kicked around.

We should find out if this kind of fundraising requires a non-profit status.

Any members of the bar, cpas or irs agents out there that have an answer to that?

Thanks guys.

Kevin, thanks for offering your help. I agree, schedules can be worked out so that working band members can also be on "crews" when they have a night off.

I can't speak for Red Eye until I talk to the guys but I'm sure we'll participate. And I would also like to work on a crew. I think it would be fun.

A couple people can't do everything. We need every one's support to get this going.

Another thing occurred to me. Once the DVDs are compiled, we could put them up for sale at gigs. Maybe the band could split the proceeds as an incentive. .........Just a thought.

I LOVE this idea. Anything that any of us can do to show our troops that they have not been forgotten about MATTERS. My sister's husband is Spec OPS and is currently stationed in Balad, Iraq. He has had numerous tours to the Middle-East ... .and I know that the things that he treasures most and looks forward to the most are the letters from home and any kind of connection to his life back here. We are blessed this time around that we have been able to have frequent e-mail contact with him. It keeps my sister and their three young kids going and helps them sleep a bit better at night while their Dad is away.

I'd gladly pay for a DVD of our local musicians to send to my brother-in-law.

Please keep this project going...it's a wonderful thing!!!

I think this is a wonderful idea! Count me in to assist in any way. :D

It would be nice to see all the bands on rockpage contribute to this one.

It should not be a problem. It would only be a problem if I was trying to use this to get myself a cut of the money or use it as a tax write-off, which I'm not.
I can't make any solid commitments as a volunteer, as I never know when I'll be gone on short notice.

I have a digital miniDV camcorder and can also do mastering and editing. I could do a few shows and master them into whatever format we are going to use.

As for the band....we have a lot of gigs, but they are all private clubs and mostly out of town. It would not be appropriate to do this in a private club. I think the next public gig is in April.

We could kick up some noise about this at one of our shows. Great idea and an awesome way to show support for the troops even if you dont support this idiotic war.

As far as selling the CD - eh. Lets just keep it for the troops - just a thought.

Rock on with this!

Agreed Steve. To offer the cd for consumer sale outside for just the troops would cheapen the project per say. Granted I can understand everyone involved wanting a copy for their own personal collection.

I still would like to see all the bands of rockpage step up for this one. While comparing Hawk's list of who has stepped up to assist and looking at the top 10 bands listed on the main page, I've noticed not many of the bands that are supposedly the most popular in the area have spoke up. I see individual names of band members but not commitments from entire bands.

Count me in. I'm not in a rock band, but I can help out in other ways, I'm pretty decent with a camera, and I've been known to associate with local media. Let me know what you need.--------->JMS

Mistress, I know you mean well, but damn, woman, give us some time!

This thread was started only yesterday, and unless you're a solo act, we need to be able to run everything by our bandmates before committing.

I would like to add something: Bands that do participate, please give supportive words to the troops. In other words, don't spew your political views at them...that includes conservative and liberal bullshit. Remember this is for the troops regardless of your beliefs.
