Soldiers who are serving in Iraq.
I Love it !
So many offering help !
How cool would it be to to a digital video to DVD of everyone on one stage playing and singing directly to the troops ! Like they were here. Sort of a poor man's USO tour. And every one at one time singing God Bless America and God Bless the USA !
And the Rock Page Tribute To The Troops Song !

Another great idea and I can't take credit as it was done elsewhere but raise money with a band jam/concert to buy phone cards to distribute to them so they can call home free.

Great idea Tracula. I was in the service and I can remember when I was overseas or far from home that phone cards were like gold. With the exchange rates and fees a 600 minute phone card would only last me about 15-20 minutes. But all the ideas that were suggested on here are fabulous ideas. The little things in life that I always took forgranted became more important to me than I ever imagined when I was in situations like that. Getting any sort of mail was always my number one source of motivation.
Videos destroyed the vitality of rock and roll. Before that, music said, "Listen to me." Now it says, "Look at me."

I tried to get a hold of a Mr. (don't know his rank) Chuck States today but my message was not returned. Perhaps he wasn't in today. I was told he handles these kind of things.
I talked to a recruiter yesterday and he said Chuck could help.
I never thought of the phone card thing. Good idea.
As it looks right now, the best way to raise money and bring everyone together, would be a massive band night, with bands taking turns mixed with some all out jams.
I'd like to see a personal touch added, rather than just raising money. Like recording the event and interviews with people wishing the troops well. I know some of them have access to computers, so we might be able to do a direct link web cast ? Like they were here with us.
Let's make this as personal as possible so it's more than just a fund raiser.
Bands are most busy on weekends. So we would likely need to do this on a Thursday evening or a Sunday afternoon. I don't think finding a centrally located venue would be a problem. Or like, one in Altoona, one in State College, one in Johnstown ? Just a thought.
The ode to the troops written for us could be done as a peotry reading.
Any more Volunteers ?
Any more suggestions ?
Keep 'em commin' !

Actually Bill, I have been biting my tongue on this one for awhile.Hawk wrote:As it looks right now, the best way to raise money and bring everyone together, would be a massive band night, with bands taking turns mixed with some all out jams.

As much as I wish they were, these band jams are not anywhere near the best way to raise money. Sure, they are fun, but you would probably do better to try to collect $1 from each rockpage member than to go to the hassle and expense of a jam that might raise $150.
A band jam might work better with free admission and a voluntary donation barrel.
...Oh, the freedom of the day that yielded to no rule or time...
Don't bite your tongue ! I'm just looking for ANY ideas.lonewolf wrote:Actually Bill, I have been biting my tongue on this one for awhile.Hawk wrote:As it looks right now, the best way to raise money and bring everyone together, would be a massive band night, with bands taking turns mixed with some all out jams.

Yeah , I know, I've seen some band jams fail, We would need a commitment and advertisement to make, like you said, more than $150.
We need to figure out a way to pack a place. All age show ? Contests ? See who can raise the most money ? Donate in behalf of a Rockpage listed band, and see which band can raise the most money. Winner gets a trophy ? Just thinking off the top of my head here.
But I want to do something and I see others who think the same thing.
But Jeff, you never hesitate to speak up . LOL
yeah, i used to call home from germany it was like a buck a minute! that was 20 years ago.
hawk, this will take some serious planning, its almost feb. now, just a suggestion but maybe we ought to be thinking of an outdoor venue sometime in late may. gives people time maybe to clear schedules make good plans logisticly speaking and not rush to make something happen just for the sake of doing something. lets do this right and lets go big. greenhouse park in j-town as 1 suggestion plenty big enough to even have a couple of stages. fri. and saturday with sat. being kind of the main event. i have some good contacts with business owners that would donate moneys possibly to get this off the ground. we'll have to check into license and permits for alcohol etc.... no disrespect to bar owner what-so-ever but theres no sense in them making the money in this venture. this is about raising money for the troops. because of what it is for alot of stuff will be donated for some small advertisment i'm sure. i say we (rockpagers) make this happen.
theres alot to make happen. thats why i suggest taking some time.lets form a commitee somehow, get together ,talk about what each individuals strongpoints are and go from there. this was just a suggestion and nothing more i'm not trying to run anything. as far as i'm concerned this is the hawks baby. I WANT TO HELP. i'm home most of the time with my daughter i can meet with people do the leg work. my computer skills suck ass, so i can't really do much in that capacity.
we have alot of talented people here on rp, and I KNOW we can make our guys overseas proud of us as we are of them. lets do this mother fucker.
hawk i will PM you with my # if you are interested in my help. i'm in with whatever you decide. i really feel a commitee(sp) of 5 or so guys to get the ball rolling though.

Cool mjb. Let's talk.
IS THERE ANYONE WHO WOULD LIKE TO JOIN US FOR A LITTLE BRAINSTROMING ? ! ? !
We could meet and hash a few things out in ONE meeting, maybe even down a couple of brews.
Who's on board ?
mjb, I'll wait for some responses to getting together. If I don't get any I'll start a new thread to ask "who's on board ?"

Very cool!!!!
I know almost everyone that I was with over there had laptops to watch DVD's. We did have a shitty ass satelite dish for internet service that worked ok I guess. I kept up with Rockpage the whole 12 months, especially Weekend Recaps in JP's Corner. I'm telling you that shit made a difference.
Anyway, I can probably tell you that the basic things like personal hygiene items and playing cards and shit like that is in abundance over there. We used to get so much stuff from local schools, churches, organizations, and hell from groups and folks all over the country that we didn't know what to do with half of it!!! Very much appreciated though. We gave a lot of it to local children. There is an organization called Any Soldier that sent us a lot of things. I believe that soldiers can go on there website and actually request what they want sent. It is a very good program. I can't remember any other specific organization names off the top of my head because there were so many....i'd have to do a little research.
Phone cards are a very good idea. As AllHolLowsEVe mentioned, the phone card rate sucks. If you were to go with that idea, I would suggest on only buying AAFES pre-paid military cards. No other phone card compares to the exchange rate. And yes there are AT&T phone trailers in Iraq. It is kinda like those PennDOT field office trailers with about 20 phone stalls inside them.
I am not sure right now of what local units are in Iraq or Afghanistan right now. THere have been so many locals deployed in the past 2 or 3 years. I know a lot of PA National Guard got back this past summer and in November of 2005. I could try to find out. I think that it would be much more appreciated if they would be the recipients of whatever comes out of this. It hits home a lot closer when you get letters or packages or anything from around your home town.
Booze was always a favorite goodie to get. Oh wait, you can't drink in Iraq. I forgot about that one.
But hell even getting a letter was fine with me. I think that recording a DVD of shows would be cool and have personalized messages from the bands placed in there. Maybe like a song or two from local bands. It wouldn't cost barely anything. It wouldn't even have to be a band jam; just record songs from everyone's shows and have a compilation DVD. Hell, you guys wouldn't even have to change your schedules. I think that would definitely add the personal touch. I would have loved to get something like that. But again, I would say definitely try to send out to local units or local individuals over in the combat zones.
I gotta go for now. I'll write some more later.

Hal, some darn good ideas there !
I like the idea of taking a digital video cam to as many local venues as possible . Record a couple songs from each band, Have local people give a personal message to the troops. Mass produce it in DVD fromat. and send it to home town troops ! YES I love it.
Perhaps have a donation collection at each venue.
Please keep 'em commin' !

i think somebody mentioned ipods for the troops? that would be cool. camoflage ones. once this thing got rolling and we figure out what it is exactly what we're going to do. maybe a call to Apple public relations office, and let them know what we're doing and who knows, maybe thay would want to donate some of those "nano" ipods to the cause. i forget what they retail for but i'm sure it probobly only cost apple a few bucks to make. i know your probobly thinking thats a bit over the top, but i don't really think it's that far out.you never know till you try.
russ reihart, you seem to be pretty hip on that stuff, didn't you go to cali for something to do with that kinda stuff. what do you think?
i really like Hals input, he's been there and if a committee(i can't spell tht word for some reason) is formed i think his input would be crucial to getting these guys what they need not what we want for them.
i love the dvd ideas alot.
as far as band jams making 150 dollors. you guys make some good points and i get what your saying. i've seen a few go in the shitter as well.
usually piss poor planning. this cause effects the masses, the whole country not just a couple familys where the turn-out is weak and the support is weak. people care about the troops no matter the age group, either they have a personal family member who's there or been there or they connect on another level, like desert storm or vietnam korea,wwII.doesn't matter what side of the aisle your setting on. people here care about our guy/gals and want to do something. if and when we start looking for sponsors, i dare somebody to tell me no, just won't happen. how can you say no to this. it has to be presented in a professional way like a nice flyer(for lack of a better word) front and back and if it's folded in threes now you have a pamphlet(sp) which is nice as a selling tool. toonarockguy seems to have a way of writing quite nicely maybe he could come up with a way to word this thing on a pamphlet. maybe someone could design the pamphlet.
i was inspired by hawks original post and penned the words to that song that hawk posted it took me like 15 minutes. i'm not much of a wordsmith but i was inspired to do so. maybe some of you guys that write original material SPELLBOUND, DIRTY SANCHEZ could fix that up, add to it take some stuff out, fuck around with it and come up with something inspireing. i welcome that whole heartedly. and it could go in the pamphlet.
the point i'm trying to make is we here at rockpage, working together and using our individual strengths could all pull together in different capacitys and put on an awesome show or whatever is decided. i mean we would need knoledgable guys/gals as stage hands that can change gear out between sets and be efficiant so theres liitle downtime as possible just that for example. there will be tons of stuff like that to do. everybody is good at something. what are you good at? and how can you apply that to this project. if only a couple want to do stuff, it makes it a bigass job to pull off but if EVERYBODY pitches in the tasks become alot easier.
this is all just suggestions, but this can happen. and i guarantee it aint no 150.00 deal.
i 'm getting more fired up about this by the minute and i hope you all are too!
thanks,
mike

Somebody said "Poor Man's USO"...
listen, I know it's gonna cost some money -- but Im sure it'll be worth it should work... but how about a Series of Shows...
example: 5 shows... (i use 5 cuz it's a satisfying number)
Show 1: Rusty Gun Revival - Felix and the Hurricanes
City Limits, Altoona
Show 2: Scream - Bad DaZe
County Line Inn, Mount Union
Show 3: Second Offense - 4 Days Dirty - FedUP
Aldos, Juniata
Show 4: Your Dying Wish - Eyes of Anguish - In Our Defense
Surf N Skate, Du Bois
Show 5: The Nightcrawlers - The Rustlanders - The Marauders
Phryst, State College
using these bands as an Idea only (because they're all i could think of) - combine 4 bar shows, and 1 all ager -- PROMOTE PROMOTE PROMOTE that it's for the Troops... free cover (except at all age show - charge 3 bucks because if it's a free show -- kids wont give money at all) with Volunteer collection buckets (KFC style). Video tape performances (1 or 2 songs per band) and Im sure somebody has Adobe Premiere and After Effects lying around somewhere and will edit the video and sound for free...
this wont be enough cuz of costs (venues, sound, ect ect ect) but take what small amount of money you can -- and try another series...
the war aint going to be over anytime soon... and troops will be there for a long time, so if it takes a year or 2 to raise the funds... do so
