It doesn't work with all Windows software but, there are a host of projects (like Wine and Cedega for Windows games that are using DirectX) that are working on compatibilities for some much wanted apps that are only Windows compatible. Most of the general usage things have been done though.

I really mostly use it because it is running my server software that I like to use (Tomcat hooked up with Apache, mySQL, PHP), also running Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory server software and TeamSpeak. I wanted to put FEAR in its place but, it has nowhere near the balls to run it...lol.

Linux is an open-source adaptation of Unix for intel based PCs. Only software written for Linux will run on it. There is a fair amount of general use open-source application software available for it and there is a company called Red Hat that specializes in all things Linux.

Linux is generally considered an excellent choice as a low-cost web server or file server. Its generally not considered a good choice for a workstation because there is very little high-quality specialized application software available. A good example of this is in the CAD/CAM field. None of the major CAD/CAM software companies support Linux, so engineering departments just don't bother with it.

Depends on what you are looking for. For a first time user, I would most likely recommend Ubuntu (one of my friends who is a Linux "guru" agrees with this) but, I really like the Fedora Core distro myself. They've made upgrading a breeze with yum.

Yeah, we don't use them for our workstations at work, we use Linux boxes as our servers. The ease of use of a PC (ie: login, click on IDE, go to town) means less time goofing with our OS and more time working on projects.

Laugh if you want to, really is kinda funny, 'cause the world is a car and you're the crash test dummy.
