pick of choice

i remember when i was a little boy taking lessons and it would be time to go to my room and practice, i could never even back then hang onto a pick, could never find one, i remember my dad (r.i.p.) cutting picks out of the plastic bread thingies. you know, the things after you spin the loaf, you put that plastic thing on to secure freshness.yeah one of those. and they actually worked pretty well. as time went on the problem of hanging on to a pick has always been a pain in my ass, to where i eventually just adapted my playing to finger picking. i never use a pick to play acoustic but always want one for electric playing. when i got on to albert king and albert collins and seen what they could do without a pick it seemed like it was o.k. to play without one on the electric as well.the way you attack the strings with a pick is totally different and i like using a pick to play electric. problem being i can never seem to find one. i have about a half dozen places to look and maybe get lucky. they are:
1. junk drawer
2.the pants i had on yesterday
3.a couple other drawers in the house
4.various junk containers by the washing machine
5. guitar cases(never any there)
6. stuck in the crack of the dryer door (find one there almost every time)

so.... where do you look for picks in a pinch? and what flavor do you like?
i like the old fashioned fender medium or heavys, none of the fancy no slip stuff although they are cool they are usually to exspensive.

I like dunlop picks. Med & heavy. I like to have both around. No matter how many i get, i lose them all.

I've used about every kind of pick out there (or tried them). I usually
opt for Dunlop Tortex or D'Addario Delrins in medium/medium heavy thickness. Bace, you are using medium thickness Tortex I believe. I like these because they last much longer than standard cellulose picks like Fender, Gibson, etc.

Same here. Great picks! I get 'em with a custom imprint for extra fun.

I use Dunlop .70 gauge on electric, and picks made of either rosewood or ebony when I play acoustic. The rosewood and ebony picks give the acoustic a little warmer sound, plastic picks can sound a bit brittle.

Dunlop jazz, the little green ones ( NOT the rounded tip ones). You know, the ones nobody EVER has in stock (hint, hint to any local retailers reading this thread). I have to go to State College to get them. When those little bastards are new, they're perfect. Plus, in a pinch you could use them to substitute for a broadhead in archery season!

Dunlop Tortex 1 mm (the blue ones). And by the way they make quite a bit of noise when stuck in the impellor of a washing machine. Oops.

I used to use the Dunlop Tortex 1.14mm but, they were too thin. I use Dunlop 1.5mm now (mostly because that is the thickest I could find). The thicker the pick, the less it gives. The less it gives, the less motion is wasted and the faster I can pick.

Hey mjb, one thing that works for me on the acoustic guitar is putting about 20 picks inside the guitar and when you want one just shake it out, and if you return it when your done you will always have picks.

Fender mediums are my primary choice. Heavy's don't have enough give to them for me, and I like to feel the pick reacting to the string, so I don't care much for lights. I also have some felt picks sitting around here, which produce a similar timbre as if you were using your fingers. I don't use them much, because they don't have much give, and when I use a pick on bass, I'm doing it for the unique timbre that it produces, not for speed.

As far as where I go to look for a pick, old sKool and I both have pickholders mounted to the fronts of our power conditioners in our racks. It works out really cool!

p.s. Everytime we'd play Pelly's, I would find a discarded Green Eggs pick. I ended up having this small collection of Green Eggs picks, one them I really liked. Unfortunatley, I lost it on a stage somwhere.

LOL When I was a senior in high school, we did a production of Grease and I was in the pit orchestra. After every night, I felt like a rockstar and threw my strap into the audience. I think that it got returned like twice.

Never seen anyone else use them.

Honestly, I've never tried a steel pick on an electric guitar. I've only ever used it on an acoustic. I'll give it a try sometime.

i use the black Jim Dunlop picks that have the grips on the back of them, ive never dropped one at a show, no matter how drunk i was.

My son always gets ahold of my picks and takes them with him back to his mothers house, so every time i need a pick i gotta go buy them. I bought 2 packs of black picks and 2 packs of green tortex picks about a month ago when i was at guitar center. i still have four black ones and no green ones. I always find them in the damnedest places tho when i do find them. I found a few in the refridgerator one time.

I'm a weirdo. I only use one special kind of pick... Dunlop Nylon Glow Standards, 446R (yes, I had to find the site to figure that part out), and almost always .67 gauge. 3 good reasons: 1) They've got great grip on them; 2) They've got an interesting look, and great feel; 3) They glow in the dark! But, like Lowglass's issue,... THEY DON'T SELL MY PICKS HERE!!! I've still got some from like 5yrs ago from a store near Baltimore... Damn, I need to get some new ones

I usually use dunlop yellows, medium I believe. I've tried gorilla snot to help for grip but it kinda sucks. I had gotten some white picks with a grip tape type material ( like on the deck of a skateboard ) on the top portion of the pick. they worked great but I can't find em anymore.
