2 huh? Well lemme see.....Dickey Betts and Andy Powell of Wishbone Ash.....shit...am I really that old????
I'm listening to some old Wishbone Ash with Andy Powell this evening, the Pilgrimage album. It has some of his best guitar work. I'm playing "Vas Dis" on Q94's "Closet Chronicles" this Sunday night (shameless plug, I know).

That's a great list Jim!

Since the rules have been broken and people are listing more than two, I'll throw out some names that haven't been mentioned yet.

- Alex Skolnick: Whether it's Testament, Savatage, or Trans-Siberian Orchestra, everything this man touches turns to gold. He has chops and musicality.

- Page Hamilton: I've always been a big Helmet fan. The man's a jazz trained guitarist. Every dissonant chord in Helmet's music is carefully thought out.

- Chet Atkins: This man is a legend. Not only was he instrumental in creating the Nashville Sound, but he was one of the best guitarist to ever live.

- Thurston Moore: A Sonic Youth album is an education in sound. He's not about playing guitar, he's about creating texture.

- Andres Segovia: People once said that the guitar was an inferior instrument. Mr. Segovia proved them wrong. He was the greatest classical guitarist to ever live!

- Jennifer Batten: C'mon, you have to be fuckin' good to play guitar behind Jeff Beck. Plus, she uses a Kleen Axe string mute, which I've been trying to find one for years.

- Jerry Cantrell: He's not the fastest or most technical, but I loved his work in Alice in Chains.

- John Mayer: IMO, one of the best guitar players to hit the mainstream in a VERY long time. He's making real commercial music right now, but as he grows as an artist, I hope that he starts doing more progressive stuff.
"He's the electric horseman, you better back off!" - old sKool making a reference to the culturally relevant 1979 film.

Wow, too many to list! So I'll defer to my earliest guitar heroes, both of whom are sadly kinda washed up:

Eddie Van Halen - So many great ideas coming at ya! Not just technically, but musically. Uncanny ability to create "solos as mini-compositions" while always sounding spontaneous.

The Edge - A minimalist and a guitar hero? Musically dominant and instantly identifiable without ever shoving his playing down your throat? That's awesome. Faded into oblivion after Achtung Baby, the bastard.

Great to see some obscure ones showing up in these lists. (Did someone really mention Richard Lloyd and Television? Wow.) Two more from the backburner are Steve Stevens and Joey Santiago.

Jimi,

Ya, Richard Lloyd's great. He can make it sound like a left handed
Cro-mag trying to play right-handed, with three broken fingers yet
still somehow cool and memorable. AND, with the driest possible
strat sound. Totally cool.

Oh yeah, Gary Lee Connor (Screaming Trees) and Mike McCready (P.J.)
since the keeping it to 2 is out-the-window.

...Dick Wagner and Glenn Buxton. Mick Ronson.

I'm also surprised that Brian May's name hasn't shown up a bunch...and JIMMY PAGE!!!! COME ON!?!?!?!?

Other surprising omissions:

Ace Frehley
Ritchie Blackmore
Adrian Vandenberg
Vivian Campbell
Jake E. Lee
Chris DeGarmo
Michael Wilton
Angus Young
The guy from Trixter...okay...kidding. May be great, but I have no idea who he is and
am not familiar with his playing.
