MUSIC THE DEODORANT TO LYRICS

I hear a lot of phrases like " I play from the heart", " it's only rock and roll", "this one came from deep within my soul", etc

that is all fine and dandy, but they are excuses most of the time, OR, they are ONE SIDED.

Song is a 2 headed monster. It is LYRICS AND MUSIC. Often times when I hear phrases like" I play with feeling and from the heart", you are referring to performance of MUSIC.

When a musician goes up and rocks his heart out on stage, most of the time no one is doubting his emotion and feeling. Many good musicians play from the heart and with great emotion. However, they might be performing a GUT WRENCHING PIECE OF CRAP.

What is happening is THEY RESPECT MUSIC but DISRESPECT LYRICS. They poor their heart out in playing guitar but they didn't with lyrics.

If a guitar player gets up on stage and plays with a guitar out of tune, and he performs out of time, we the listener are going to know it. You will hear the clash of continual dissonance. Plus you will hear when someone is not in time. The reason being, MOST PEOPLE are LISTENING to the music and NOT JUST HEARING IT. our ears tell us when something is wrong.

However, on the flip side, when we deal with lyrics, suddenly ANYTHING GOES. It's as almost as if MUSIC IS THE DEODORANT TO A BAD LYRIC. No one wants to LISTEN TO OUT OF TUNE PLAYING, yet we are willing to listen to CHARACTER FLAWS, PERSON PROBLEMS, LYRICAL TIME FRAME PROBLEMS, ETC.

However, when it comes right down to it, I DON'T THINK A PERSON IS LISTENING, HE IS HEARING. When someone only HEARS something they don't focus on what is actually being said. They are only getting bits and pieces of something. When one LISTENS to something they are getting the full information.

If you are WATCHING A MOVIE, and one character calls the other on the phone and says I AM SLEEPING WITH ANOTHER WOMEN, and the other character says back" WHAT IS GONG ON OVER THERE, WHAT IS UP, I KNOW SOMETHING IS UP , WHAT IS IT"

that would strike you odd. Your eyes and ears just told you that the one character already told the other character what was going on. You would think to yourself, why is the woman asking what is going on she would already know. The person just told her?

Yet you as the listener DO NOT QUESTION THIS SAME OUTCOME in sheryl crow and kid rocks song. This is a result of JUST HEARING THE LYRIC AND NOT LISTENING TO THE LYRIC.

Good songwriting GOES BEYOND JUST GETTING THE MESSAGE AND THEME.
