I wonder, does anyone here see the importance of a movie director? I was listening to Tom Hanks talk about how he wrote and co directed the movie CASTAWAY.

He talked for a long time on ACCURACY of situation. It was interesting to hear him talk about how he did REWRITES to the film scrip before it was actually crystalized. The reason he said was THE CHARACTER WAS NOT ACCURATE.

He said IF ONE IS STRANDED ON A BEACH by himself, AT WHAT POINT does the character START TO TALK TO HIMSELF. Now I'm not talking the occasional
conversation to oneself of " OH BROTHER, THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING TO ME" I am talking about CARRYING A CONVERSATION.

The director in Tom Hanks started to rewrite long before the scrip was finished. He started to notice things like

1 This character is too talkative to himself the minute he lands on the island. This comes off like he really isnt stranded, like there is someone else there, and UNBUYABLE


The BRILLIANCE of the movie castaway lies within the fact of ITS ACCURACY. The way the film doesn't have much dialog through the first half of the movie. Only when it reaches the half way point does he start to talk to himself more and more. He even CREATES A COCONUT FRIEND that he talks to himself. HENCE CRAVING COMPANIONSHIP.


Do we all get what Castaway was about, ABSOLUTELY. But Tom Hanks DID NOT STOP THERE. He wanted the film to be EXECUTED ACCURATELY

That my friends is what I am teaching in songwriting to most of you, WHO FAIL TO SEE THAT.

What I am saying to you is this

1 Dont worry about money and how much someone makes, Britney Spears is a prime example. She makes loads of money but her songs are cliche and fluff

2 Don't worry about hits, GREAT SONGS WILL BE NUMBER ONE, HOOOOWEVER, NOT ALL NUMBER ONE SONGS ARE GREAT

3Don' t worry about fame and thinking that is what credibility is. The person who is famous and says 2+2= 6 IS WRONG. The no name person who says the answer is 4 will be right.

The problem is you people don't look WHO IS AT THE TOP. IT is BUSINESS MEN, NOT MUSICIANS. What do they know about ACCURACY, MEANING, MUSICIANSHIP, ETC. This is why Britney spears is number one and famous. Because business men who think with their dicks and not their ARTISTIC EYE.

I have to laugh you will listen to a RECORD EXE when he tells you your song is great. The record exe is a business major who never played music in his life. The guy knows nothing about it. Yet you will listen to him.

Now I come along and say, your lyric contains such and such flaws like, LYRICAL TIME FRAME PROBLEM, A CHARACTER FLAW, UNBUYABLE STORY, etc and you all think I am crazy. However, I majored in SONGWRITING FROM BERKLEE COLLEGE OF MUSIC

IF you want to take the advice of a NON MUSICIAN go right ahead. You will have a song that is shown to the world YOUR IGNORANCE AND LACK OF ATTENTION TO DETAIL. ( that is what I call selling out)

that record executive is setting up an artist's multi-million dollar bank account. Is the music major doing that? I've never watched Castaway, generally, if there isn't a shitload of violence, like a vampire flick or something of the sorts or an action flick, I dont care to watch, just not entertaining...although comedy is great too, you can never beat something that makes you laugh....then there is the occassional love movie that has some sick twist, i like that too...oh yeah and the movies with lots of nudity, those are great....and umm, let me think...but castaway ive never scene

To test my theory, I want you to ask yourself, CAN YOU PLAY A SONG LIKE ERUPTION by Eddie Van Halen. Can you at least BUTCHER your way through the song? How about this, can you at least noodle with fast lick solos and do tapping techniques.

If you answered YES to the above question, then most likely YOU ARE BETTER than B.B king. You are better than Angus Young. You are better than Tony Iommi, etc

B.B king CAN’T EVEN play chords. All he does is play the blues scale. Angus young never gets past the pentatonic scale. At best he can hammeron and pull off, but he can’t tap like eddie.

Most of you people here have EVOLVED in guitar, where most of the so called stars HAVEN’T. Angus is where he is at a CERTAIN LEVEL, and HE HAS NOT PROGRESSED.

What I am trying to make you people learn here that YOU ARE NOT MORTALS and B.B king is some god. B.B and Angus and Iommi ALL HAVE LIMITATIONS.

The point that I am making is QUESTION AND CHALLENGE the so called stars. 90 percent of them are famous because THEY ARE LUCKY AND AT THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME, not because they are genius guitar players

I don’t know about you , but when a guitar player CAN’T EVEN PLAY ONE CHORD, like B.B king THAT PISSES ME OFF. Here is a guy who admits to the world, HE CAN’T PLAY A CHORD, and he has a record deal?

I am willing to bet my life, EVERY guitar player who is fighting me right now, IS BETTER than B.B king

Ok jerkoff, 1) I'm 31, obviously an adult. 2) I have seen the inside of the industry (at least as much as I wanted to!) Oh yea, it wasn't my lack of talent that stopped me from a recording contract ..... IT WAS ME who decided it was something I DIDN"T WANT TO DO! For nearly the last 10 years I have spent the majority of that time touring professionally throughout most of this country. Anyone who knows me knows which two bands I have been in and where and when we toured! I have recorded several independent cd's, carried on meetings with the "big wigs" in NYC more times than I can remember, showcased, and shared the stage with everyone from VANILLA ICE (yes I did and proud of it!), Fuel, 7 Mary 3, Clutch, Mushroomhead, and fucking Kansas just to name a few! I have seen friends of mine and former tour buddies make it big like fuel, breaking bengamin, lifer, etc. and I am very proud of EVERYTHING I have accomplished as a musician!

Don't even try to judge me or put me down. What in the bloody hell have you done???!!! Anyone who knows me will tell you I am a down to earth guy, but when some asshole like you comes out of the blue and questions me than I'm gonna let you have it!

I know what it's like to have to share one cigarette with 6 guys cause you're not making enough on tour to buy your own, I know what it's like to never sleep, play in front of people who never heard you, and just wish to Christ that you were back home!
