I know the subject of playing covers has been discussed (too) many times on this board, but here is something I heard second-hand today that is so arrogant. Some people here at work saw Sean Lennon play at the re-furbished State theatre here in SC. Said it was a great show, acoustics are awesome there. They also said SL was making fun of musicians who only play covers. Like really berating them. I'm thinking, OK, here is a guy that never HAD to play a cover in his life with a name like that. I don't think his name necessarily makes people like his music if its crap (its pretty good), but I'm sure he had doors open for him. Many of you play covers to either get a start or to survive, and its not usually the choice of the musician, its what people want to hear. I just thought it was arrogant of him as he has never lived that life. Discuss?

Interesting. I've read and heard interviews with him and always thought he came across
as pretty humble and grounded.

I didn't see the show (Though I've heard a lot of great stuff about the theater and they have
some great stuff booked) but if he did make, and mean, the comments, I think you summed
it up pretty well.

Maybe he needs reminded that The Beatles played covers for a LONG TIME in the clubs in
Hamburg, etc. and, as you alluded, without that he wouldn't have been born, much less be standing on a stage.

I was at the concert. It was very good. I could be wrong; but I did not get the impression he was talking about cover bands when he was criticizing people who don't write their own music. I took from it that he was talking about popular performers who don't write their material. I would have more expected people to be angry about his comments on foreign shoe manufacturing.

Hey, I saw the show as well. I working tech for sound that night. Sean was fantastic. His FOH engineer was very talented... only his second show with them! Kamila Thompson, the female vocalist that opened for Sean was very talented as well. Her cover of Last Christmas was very good. Her originals were very moving as well.

I didn't get that feeling at all from Sean about bands who do covers. I think it may have been mis-communicated.

The acoustics are absoultely fantastic there. Jim Bowersox of IDS/Shoreline did the install. I was present when the main PA hangs were flown and for the installation of the underbalcony fills, amps, FOH and monitor consoles.

For those that are interested the theatre has 2 vertically flown Turbosound Floodlight TFL760 per side and Yorkville TX9 subwoofers in the tech boxes. Underbalcony fills are 4x Martin AQ5s and the front fills are 4x Renkus-Heinz Microtraps. The system is all QSC Powerlight amplified.

The console that is currently at FOH is the one that I had out and about the area for the last few months the Soundcraft GB8. Courteously given to us to demo by Tom Der of Soundcraft and Mark Herman of Light and Sound International. It will be there for a couple of months as a demo for ProsoundWeb's Road Test program. I just got back from mixing monitors there tonight. Monitor rig is a A&H GL3300, Yorkville TM12 wedges and QSC Powerlight amps. It was another excellent sounding show. The guest band engineer had a slew of Neumann microphones for vocals and fiddle, and we had a Shure KSM32 on the piano as well as a Shure SM81.

We are at State Theater on the 13th. Havent been inside yet, but hear its pretty amazing and we are all stoked to play. Are you the "house" guy?

I'm not familiar with the style of music the Nightcrawlers specialize in. I've seen a video on IUP tv a while back but it was just a taste. It's not a "balls to the wall" rock venue, but you will like the place guaranteed.

Are you the "house" guy?

I'm one of them. Jim Bowersox is the man in charge of house sound. I just occasionally mix monitors, and tech FOH.

I'm looking to Doyle Lawson in a couple weeks, and especially Ralph Stanley in March. There hasn't been a national bluegrass act in SC for waaaay too long.------->JMS

I didnt know we were on TV up at IUP so I have no idea what sort of a video you saw. I had to laugh at reading your "balls to the wall" statement. I wouldnt classify us as that. Im not what others would say. Well be playing all originals as well as the other two bands, the Rustlanders and the Hi Fis. You can check us out on myspace if you have an interest.

Were definitely more "rockin" at our bar gigs, when we have to play covers with our stuff.

Chris Botti will be there in March I believe. (Jazz Trumpet) I'm really looking forward to that.
