What albums have you bought lately?
I do IT work; I love computers; I always look at my bass rig and say, "How can I upgrade this now?" In other words, I'm a techie guy. And even though I'm a techie guy, I will never own an I-Pod because I still love going into a store and buying a full album (CD in this case) with all of the original art work and packaging like the artist intended. I guess that I'm old school in that way.
Anyways, what albums have you guys and gals bought recently? Last month, I ordered a couple of CDs from CDbaby. You gotta love their $5 special CDs. I picked up...
Waking - The Maze: This is an EP. There's definitely a big A Perfect Circle influence going on here. The opening track could definitely fit on modern rock radio.
Colporter - Despite the Battle: This is another EP, though they also have a full-lenght for sale. They're a three piece with a female vocalist/bassist. They kind of remind me of Lacuna Coil or the Gathering, but with a much heavier sound. The singer's a few cents flat in a couple parts of the album, but I've heard some downright terrible singing on mainstream radio lately, so it's a breath of fresh air anyways. I really like the guitar work on this one.
Analog Method - Nightrider: This is acid jazz. Now, jazz snobs will argue all day about what is and what isn't jazz. When it comes to acid jazz, I don't consider a sampled Coltrane melody over a drum machine to be acid jazz. This album's all live musicians. There's also some great tenor work on it too.
Last week I picked up some more albums, all metal stuff ironically...
Metallica - Ride the Lightning: I actually owned this album once before for a total of one day. I bought it at a used store. The booklet had gotten wet before I bought it and the printed ink ran onto the back of the disc. Only have of the disc would play, so I exchanged it. I finally bought if for good.
Nights Like These - Restless: This is what the kids these days call "metalcore." I think a lot of it sounds like Earth Crisis, but I don't care about genre names. I really like the guitar tone on this album. My only compliant is that I wish some of the tracks were longer.
The Haunted - Deadeye: I'm really digging this album. I suppose that it would be "melodic deathmetal," as it seems to have that Gothenburg sound to it, and I do believe the band is from Sweden. All of the tracks stand out with their own unique voice. I also like the production: It's enough to make every song unique, but it still retains that raw edge.
So what is everyone else listening to?

Re: What albums have you bought lately?
I am the same way, but I still own an iPod because it's what I listen to in my car. It's way easier to carry thousands of songs on something the size of a deck of cards than hundreds of CD's worth. I do have reasons for downloading though, too. I bought the latest Weird Al from the iTunes store because in the record store it was only offered in the DualDisc format, which I can't stand because the Audio side doesn't conform to normal standards and you can't get a quality rip of the music to carry on portables. Plus the store DualDisc was $18, and I d/l'ed it for $10.bassist_25 wrote:I do IT work; I love computers; I always look at my bass rig and say, "How can I upgrade this now?" Back to the original question.....
The latest 2 cd's I recall purchasing were the Idol releases of Kelly Pickler and Chris Daughtry.
I love Kellys album. I think she has a great voice and she shows real passion and enthusiasm for what she's doing. It's one of the broadest country discs I have heard since Shelly Fairchilds Ride album
Chris, on the other hand.....well I don't think I have made it through the entire thing? It gets stale and boring for me. His performance is great, his band is pretty good, I just don't dig all of the songs.
Oh, and I also picked up an old Afro Celt Sound System disc, Sound Magic Vol. 1 which is very cool if you are into some trancy-electronica to "veg" to every once in a while.
Oh wait, I also got the latest Marauders disc, which I must say is the best local release I have heard in a LONG time!
Twisted Christmas...I like the way it was done. Just about what I expected.
Angel Witch-Screamin' and Bleedin'...One of my all time favorite metal albums. Amazon wants 25.00. I got a new one on Ebay for 10.00. It's a remaster. A little too much oomph in the bass. Original mix was better. Still have the LP.

"Death has come to your little town."
CDs I've purchased recently.
Primus - Singles, I don't know why, I just wanted some primus in (relatively) radio friendly form for jeep travel.
Bloodhound Gang - One Fierce Beer Coaster, I've owned this album in the past, but didn't currently, I got it at the music spot going out of buisiness sale (ironically music spot sale price is just about normal human being price somewhere else)
The Bravery, I don't know the name of this CD, and I havn't listened to it a whole lot, also purchased at music spot.
Flogging Molly - a mile from home (something like that), I also havn't listened to this one much, as I purchased it at music spot along with the last two. What I have heard is fast and floggingmollyish
Goldfinger - The Best Of. I purchased this more for the accompanying DVD than the actual CD, though there were some newer songs that I thought were pretty cool in addition to the old stuff.
That is 5 CDs in the last couple weeks, which is 5 times more than I have purchased in the entire rest of the year.

I love this album, i remember when it came out driving around with my friend listening to it nonstop. I love Goldfinger. Correction. I loved Goldfinger. Their first 2 albums were amazing. Stomping ground was pretty damn good. I lost interest after that. Good call on the hits cd though. I'll have to get it.MeYatch wrote:Goldfinger - The Best Of. Most recent Cds I got -
Rancid - Let's Go.
I've bought, and managed to lose this Cd at least 5 times. Bummer. I love Rancid. Let's Go was the best album they've done. In my opinion.
Lagwagon - Live in a Dive
Lagwagon....... Fucking awesome. I love every CD they've put out.
Social Distortion - Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell
This is another I have in Mp3 form, but wanted to have the actual CD since it was lost.
Social Distortion is hands down my favorite band.
Re: What albums have you bought lately?
Get one, and like a microwave oven, you will wonder what you did before you had one. I'm not one to jump on techno-bandwagons... my wife surprised me with a Nano last Christmas, and it's the one gift I use daily... I have it plugged into my bathroom stereo (yes, I have a stereo and TV in the bathroom, it's the only place I can listen to music undisturbed) and I also use it when I go for walks and mow the grass. It's awesome for when you know you're going to have unavoidable downtime... in line at amusement parks, on the plane, waiting for the wife, etc. Another advantage is the phenomenon of podcasting... whatever music you like, somebody has a podcast of it.bassist_25 wrote: I will never own an I-Pod because I still love going into a store and buying a full album (CD in this case) with all of the original art work and packaging like the artist intended. I've also had porn on mine. But you all figured that already.

I got a Nano last year for my birthday...and have yet to take it out of the box. I have never downloaded a song...and wouldn't begin to know how to do it. My daughter has an Ipod loaded with songs...and I am sure that in the near future some government agency is going to knock on our door and take her PC.
I will someday sitdown and read the directions on how to use my Nano...or better yet, I'll give it to my kiddo and her load it up with some tunes.

I've been listening to ...and out come the wolves on repeat in the jeep for the past several days. I'll have to check out that one.Mikey Wax wrote:Rancid - Let's Go.

I used to know how to play journey to the end, but nobody ever wants to play it with me, so I forget. I used to know ruby soho, because I actually got to play that out a few times, but no longer. I always think "maybe I'll learn the solo to maxwell murder this week" but it never happens. It would be so much practice and there's no chance I'd ever get to play it out.
I have "life won't wait" too. I learned "crane fist" off that CD a long time ago, still remember it because its pretty simple.

1) Deftones - "Saturday Night Wrist" - in my opinion not the best collective work for the deftones -- but you can't ever go wrong w/ the deftones
2) Deftones - "White Pony" - one of my favorite cds ever - I lost it a year or so ago loaning it out -- had to re-buy it.. "Change (in the house of flies)" is worth the re-purchase itself
3) The Best of Yanni - gag gift for Work Christmas Party
4) Once Nothing - bought the cd at a Once Nothing show in Chambersburg - check these guys out - great band! (www.myspace.com/oncenothing)
5) Remembering Never - "Women and Children Die First" (another re-buy)
6) Norma Jean - "Redeemer"
7) Adrenaphine - "Purified EP" (local band - frontman's a friend)

Note to self: get Out Come the Wolves on CD. I wore out a cassette of that when it came out. Frickin' great record.MeYatch wrote:I've been listening to ...and out come the wolves on repeat in the jeep for the past several days. I'll have to check out that one.Mikey Wax wrote:Rancid - Let's Go.

I've been slacking on albums this year, but I think the new Deftones is a flat out masterwork! Great mixing, great songs, and very unusual sounds. It is amazing to me how they continue to reinvent themselves. Best album I've purchased this year (through I-Tunes, nonetheless) is the most recent Killing Joke, "Hosannas from the Basements of Hell." These cats are all pushing 50 and they're more pissed off then ever....what a wash of sound!

I only download songs to check out. REALLY! I'm too damn picky about sound quality to listen to MP3's and other compressed formats on my home stereo. They're OK in cars and on planes because they're ultra-portable and there's a noise floor to overcome that masks anything you'd gain from carrying CD's.
I really wish everything was still available on vinyl.
It's sad to me that as technology advances the sound quality of recordings has gone downhill in the name of convenience.
The last CD's I purchased were James LeBrie's solo CD and 10,000 Days.

... and then the wheel fell off.
I didn't know DFD had a new disc. Is it good? I previewed it on the iTunes store, but I couldn't get a feel for whether or not it is worth buying.orangekick wrote:I have been download happy as of late, but if I dig it, I buy it. I have purchased the following recently...

The Haunted - The Dead Eye
Novembers Doom - The Pale Haunt Departure

I prefer "The Embryo's in Bloom" and I haven't cared a whole lot for their subsequent releases.

Jay from Choking Faith gave me a copy of that DFD cd, and i think its decent tho i haven't heard their other stuff. Really reminds me of Mr.Bungle in a way.
There are some really great songs on it, and some that i only bothered listening to once. So its like hit or miss on a song to song basis. IMHO.
