Local Teen Bands

Post by The Face in the Face »

There used to be a good number of talented younger bands in Altoona. A few rose above the typical teen punk band prototype and actually were worth checking out.

What happened to them? Where are they now?

There are still a lot of local talented bands around the area. The problem is that the local bars/clubs around here aren't letting the local bands play. The new trend for club owner's is to look for out of town "high end" management bands. In my opinion these out of town bands are pulling in just the same amount of people as the local bands would be pulling in. Basically, the local bands don't have a place to play around this area. Not all club owner's shut their door on local bands...so ask around, call around and play at whatever club will honor your band with open arms. Show this area that the talent is sitting right outside their door...hometown bands!!!

I think Ronny D's answer is part of it, they grew up! Along the way, their bands broke up or morphed into something else; and some of the band members went on to other things, musical or otherwise.

Last year's PLCB Chaperone Amendment fiasco chased a lot of younger (under 18, the legal age to entertain in an alcohol-licensed establishment in PA) musicians and bands out of the bars and nightclubs. A lot of this area's talented young bands can be found at places like the Arandale Elks on Tuesdays, staging their own bills at the Becky Sheetz Building, also at Penn State Altoona, church basements and other settings outside the bar scene.

The young talent is still around, and there's always more on the horizon.

You guys aren't bad, TIE. i like to see bands like yours take punk influences but not play 3 chord punk. kudos.

I haven't been in the area for the past year or two, but when I left I thought there were some really great bands rocking coffeehouses and smaller venues. choco sam, electric blue, and another one i can't remember. i'm sure the scene is still in good hands though.

the future of the scene is the most important part of the scene.

I know that Choco Sam, Electric Blue and Sound Driven are still active, but don't play as often at present because of band members being away at college, music school, etc. You may see more activity from those bands once we get closer to summer and band members return to the area.

Come and check out one of our shows, we are a bunch of high strung preformers. It's always a good time.

We're at The Bunker Inn in Windber on Saturday. ( Shamless plug 8) )

Hey Tyroon, check out DRIVEN. Metal and grunge from beginning to end. I saw them after they were together for 3 months and they sounded more like 3 years. Sometimes there's even a little pit action.
