Yes or No...
I think metal detectors are a good idea, although it'd be better if they were much more common. Bars get a stigma if they are the only place around that needs metal detectors (like Classic Attitudes back in the day). Of course by that point, they probably already have a reputation for violence anyway.
I carry. I have a permit.
I'm not saying I always have it on me, and can't think of the last time I carried in a public establishment. But I do have the option (when it is legal).
I don't have any info on the subject, but I always thought it was illegal to carry in a bar.
I would bet there are more people than you realize that have permits (or don't) and carry a pistol on them (even in bars).
It is the same with everything. There are those idiots who are not responsible, level headed, law abiding people who do things that causes everyone else to get upset and start saying things like "Bars need to use metal detectors" or "There should be better laws (i.e., the government needs to protect us)" or whatever.
What people don't realize is that there are a lot more people out there carrying than what they think. And, people don't realize it because most gun owners are responsible.
Accidents happen. I hate to hear about stories where anyone (especially a young child) gets hurt or killed because of a gun. But, I also hate hearing about people getting hurt in auto accidents, fires, sports injuries, etc. I'm not equating one to the other - just saying that accidents in general are never a good thing.

I'm with 'Toona on this one. I have a gun, and will handily perforate anyone who enters my castle without my express or implied permission. That said, an MP-5, while impossibly cool in a kung-fu movie, is kinda unnecessary for home protection. Ditto an AR-15 or BFG 50-cal. Cool, but the overkill leans toward paranoia, or at least small-peckerage overcompensation.------->JMS

Another argument concerns restricting places where carrying is permitted. Some laws prohibit carriage on school premises or in drinking establishments, others restrict carrying at public accommodations (theaters, concert halls, courtrooms) or public events (polling places, State Fairs). Concealed-carry opponents generally make no distinction between drinking establishments and restaurants where alcohol is sold. Some states make this distinction. For example, in Texas, one may not carry in any establishment which generates 51% or more of its revenue from the sale of alcohol for on-premises consumption. In Florida, one may carry in a restaurant that serves alcohol, but not into the bar area. Virginia prohibits concealed-carry in businesses with a liquor license, but open-carry is permitted. Pennsylvania does not prohibit carry in any establishment, whether it be a family restaurant, bar, or club. In Ohio and North Carolina, a law-abiding permit holder may not carry in any establishment licensed to dispense alcohol for on-premises consumption. On the other hand, criminals generally carry guns wherever they please.

Well, regardless of how any of us feel about detectors being used in clubs, there are some rather inexpensive detecting devices that can be purchased for this use.
I am a metal detector enthusiast. I enjoy going out and trying to find old artifacts and coins with my detector. I'm really hoping that Santa brings me a probe this year for Christmas - that will make retrieving finds a lot easier and more efficient.
Anyway, even one of these probes that are used by metal detectorists can be used to scan a person for metal objects. The one I am hoping to get is only around $50-60 shipped. Has a 5 year warranty and from talking with other treasure hunting people on another forum, it is very durable.

In a hand-to-hand combat situation (me vs. intruder), I'd much rather have to try to deflect blows dealt with a kitchen knife — even the biggest one in the drawer — then try to deflect bullets. I mean, c'mon, I'm not Superman.ToonaRockGuy wrote:But then again, we all have kitchen knives, so there are weapons out in the open that can be used by a burgler against your loved ones.

That's not a gun issue, that's a Walmart issue...PanzerFaust wrote:How about that fool that owns the Neighborhood Tavern ?
