Dream Theater - Train of Thought

Post by aMindBesideItself »

I want to know what you guys think of Train of Thought. There is a ton of controversy over this album in the DT community. Here's how I feel about it:
- I respect the talent (hands down). No body can touch these guys. However, I've always loved the way these guys have written, but I'm just not as moved by this album. I can listen to SFAM and I&W all day and not get sick of it. ToT is a different story. Petrucci doesn't make me cry like he used to, you know. Where the heck is Rudess??? Anyways, I want to hear what you think about the album so that maybe my opinion of it can be swayed.

Nick, you know it's a shot at the mainstream, every few years they have a mainstream album and then they go back to their roots. Look at falling into infinity, then they kick ass with Scenes. Don't worry about it. :D

Woah Woah Woah, Rob. Are you saying that ToT is mainstream??? I think that ToT is further from mainstream than Scenes was. Maybe the first track is mainstream, but no way could modern music handle the rest of that album. You're going to have to justify your 'mainstream' comment.

PS...when do you wanna jam again. :o

They aimed it to more of a simple minded audience. Most people cannot get into DT because it's too much for them to comprehend. SO, they play a simpe sounding "metallica" like riff. Regular people like to hear a beat and feel a rhythem, that's what this stuff is. Musicians love the complicated stuff.

Nick- are we gonna be able to use the garage???
I can jam whenever man! Send me songs to work on!!!

Ok...I'll buy that. What would you rather hear the next DT be like. (Don't say I&W either)? I would like to hear something mellow, but moving. IE. "Take Away My Pain" mixed with "Spirit Carries On" mixed with "Lines in the Sand" kinda stuff. Rob, personally I don't think Portnoy's drumming on ToT compares to Scenes. Do you think he's gotten better, or do you think he's reached a peak?

PS...we need to do original stuff this time around.

In a way, he's peaked. I hear the same riffs all the time and he is pretty predictable in what he does. I've also been listening to too much Donati and it blows portnoy away. The next DT album should be crazier than scenes was, I don't care too much for the mellow stuff as much.

See Dan, that's how a shallow DT listener views those songs. It's not all about balls-to-the-wall shred, man. Tell me the last time you were almost brought to tears by listening to "Lie" or "The Glass Prison". Please!!! I cry everytime I hear the solo in "Another Day". That's what DT is all about man. The combination of good music w/ the technical element on top of it.

All I'm saying is that there are other DT listeners out there who aren't in it for the shred (like Litz). DT is starting to lose that side of the fan base with an album like this.

I like those songs too. ANother Day has the most powerful solo ever played on a guitar. i can listen to those songs over and over again, but as far as playing them, thats a different story. if you wanted to play only slow dt songs on the next live thingy, then id rather not do it. it has to be fun for everyone, not just guitar. (i hope rob would agree) and as far as the next dt album being all slow, i think that would be a mistake. i think some fans already think theyve gone pop. I know they have the ability to do anther I&W w/out making it seem like theyve repeated themselves.

Hey, I like the slow easy stuff, it gives the drummer a break lol, but anyways, the slow stuff is more "emotional" but I'm into the more crazy stuff since I study crazy time signatures and stuff like that. The next album could be one from thier extremes, from the soft to the hardest stuff. Maybe a greatest hits album, but then that would be a sign of their end. who knows, with a band like them, you never know what to expect.

No, more like scenes. It had the extreme soft song and the extreme instrumental. The songs were all good though. Infinity was just too mainstream sounding, the instrumental isn't all that great either. Oh and the question you had....we are the only shmucks, that's why! :D
