The Crocodile Hunter R.I.P.

Post by Jim Price »

From CNN:
SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) -- Steve Irwin, the Australian TV presenter known as the "Crocodile Hunter," has died after being stung in a marine accident off Australia's north coast.

Australian media reports say Irwin was diving in waters off Port Douglas, north of Cairns, when the incident happened on Monday morning.

Irwin, 44 was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest, according to Cairns police sources. Irwin was filming an underwater documentary at the time.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality Monday morning off Port Douglas, according to Australian media.

Queensland Police Services also confirmed Irwin's death and said his family had been notified. Irwin was director of the Australian Zoo in Queensland.

He is survived by his American-born wife Terri and their two children, Bindi Sue, born 1998, and Robert (Bob), born December 2003.

Irwin became a popular figure on Australian and international television through Irwin's close handling of wildlife, most notably the capture and relocation of crocodiles.

Irwin's enthusiastic approach to nature conservation and the environment won him a global following. He was known for his exuberance and use of the catch phrase "Crikey!"

But his image suffered a setback in January 2004 when he held his then 1-month-old baby Bob while feeding a crocodile at his Australian zoo. (Full story)

In a statement released to Australian media, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer expressed his sorrow and said that he was fond of Irwin and was very appreciative of all the work he had done in promoting Australia overseas.

In 2003, Irwin spoke to the Australian Broadcasting Corp.'s Australian Story television program about how he was perceived in his home country.

"When I see what's happened all over the world, they're looking at me as this very popular, wildlife warrior Australian bloke," he said, the ABC reported.

"And yet back here in my own country, some people find me a little bit embarrassing. "You know, there's this... they kind of cringe, you know, 'cause I'm coming out with 'Crikey' and 'Look at this beauty'."
I know a lot of people found him irritating and annoying; I always thought he was entertaining. But in the back of my mind, I always thought when I saw him getting into the faces of crocodiles and cobras, that people who play with fire sooner or later get burned. It finally caught up with him.

I also wonder when his son reaches adulthood, if he'll follow the same career path as his late father, or if he'll steer clear of wildlife.

What a bummer...he was a riot. For Easter, I bought a bunch of "Animal Planet" baskets, complete with animal hand puppets, for all of the "kids" in my family...adult ones, too. I drove everyone almost nuts saying "crikey, that's a croc!" - yep, two of them had crocs. ;-) He will definitely be missed. My immediate thoughts went to his children and wife...a total tragedy, but I agree with onegun, he died doing what he Loved...

oh crikey!... Nature wins again...

The irony of this all is.. he was documenting Australian nature at it's most brutal level. All I can muster up is.. I guess he learned the hard way!

He was truly entertaining and I loved his shows - always educational. It's sad that he leaves a wonderful loving wife and two young children behind. Just a shame.

I still can't believe it! This SUCKS so bad. I feel really terrible for Terri, their children & the rest of Steve's family..... He was one of my favorites & I just have this feeling inside my gut that a good freind has just passed or one of my favorite musicians is gone. Well, all I can say is that he did die doing something he seemed to love. But such a shame.

R.I.P. Steve & Best wishes to all of your family.

R.I.P. Steve. He was definitely entertaining and a wonderful personality! I feel bad for his family and workers at the Australian Zoo. I've watched his show quite a few times, and they always had a good time down there.

I would hope to see his son and daughter follow in his footsteps. Steve did alot of great things for the wildlife and he also followed in his father footsteps. I think it would be great if Terri kept everything going and his son and daughter went on to achieve even more than their dad did. He will be missed by alot of people Bob called me at 6:30 am to tell me and I was shocked so I am sure that alot of people around the world are missing him and still cannot believe that he was killed the way he was.

I was totally bummed when I heard about it....

I guess it was a freak accident the stingrays barb punctured the guys heart...

They interviewed a guy from the Georgia aquarium on CNN who was barbed 2-3 times and said it was no big deal... I read between the lines to believe that if it hadn't punctured his heart he would have been ok...

He could just as easily been driving down the highway and had a tire blowout so I really don't feel it's fair to say he messed with mother nature one too many times, but I can see where people will have those views...

oh well.. another sad loss ... I turn the big 40 next week and hope to God I don't go someway that makes me a canidate for a Darwin award that's all I ask of life anymore haha....

Very very sad. He seemed to enjoy every single moment of his life, and it was infectious. The world just got a little drearier. R.I.P.

He never messed with mother nature, he rescued animals all the time. He ran Australia Zoo which is like a safe haven for many animals. The guy didn't deserve to die by any means for messing with nature, he was totally in it for the animals.

From what I'm now hearing, it was more a freak accident than him doing anything daredevil. They said he was at the wrong place at the wrong time, and the stingray flipped its tail in defense, nailing him near the heart. He died almost instantly.

When I was on vacation in Myrtle Beach a few years ago, Ripley's Aquarium actually had a stingray petting tank, where children could pet the stingrays as they swam back and forth. I guess these particular rays were pretty docile, and didn't feel threatened, so there was very little danger of any stinger incidents.

I guess Animal Planet is going to run a marathon of his shows in his honor...

I saw on the news that a zoo and it might be the same one you are talking about Jim, had a petting tank with stingrays. But the guy from the zoo said they all had their tips cut off their tails. He also had a tail that was removed and it was a hard piece of razor sharp bone that was serated like a steak knife. After seeing that you could understand how it could pierce his chest and his heart.

Definitely a freak incident...considering there are only 3 recorded human deaths attributed to rays. Just a sad, sad thing.

The whole thing was caught on tape so I am sure sooner or later you can find it on the web as I am sure someone will try to make some money off of the footage. I saw an interview with someone who had seen the footage and they said that he was swimming over the ray and it came up and spiked him in the chest and that he was able to pull it out and then he was gone. The interview was with his long time friend and manager who said he didnt want to ever see the footage again. But I am sure someone will have it on the web sooner or later if you are into that type of stuff and if you look hard enough I am sure you can find it.
Also this was being filmed for the Discovery channel and I am wondering if his family can or will sue them for putting him in harms way. I also wonder what type of life insurance he had and who would write a policy for him being that he did what he did.

He'd been bit by numerous venemous snakes, spiders and other various Lord only knows what over the years and I wonder with all of that, if the venom was at all fatal. I also can't help but wonder, if he hadn't pulled the spike out, if he'd have had any chance, or was the damage to his heart irreprable...being that he did that, it was definitely over, so sad...what I'm getting at, is people's hearts have been impaled by things and they have lived to tell about it because they left whatever was in their heart, there. If a major artery or valves hadn't been damaged, might there have been a chance? Is anyone else wondering the same things?

I for one doubt his family would ever sue, he'd put himself in harm's way since he was a child - of course, I could be wrong...and I could also be very wrong, but I'd say he was very well taken care of in the insurance realm...there are companies who cover such high-rish persons.

Toona sent a Bulletin on MySpace and in it were several happy pics of Steve and also of him with his beloved wife and daughter. There was also a much larger version of the "HUUUUGE Croc", albeit a stuffed one, :) that I have happy memories making a total idiot of myself with at Easter - "Crikey!" ...and thank you Steve Irwin, for sharing your gifts with the world for a little while...
