Ok, i made this post because im jamming out to some older music and i think everyone should hear this stuff.

"Sultans of Swing' By Dire Straits is one HELL of a song. The whole thing rules and the guitar solo is incredible.
I can imagine what it was like to hear this song and other great songs when they originally came out. There is a ton of older music that beats the hell out most of this new shit coming out. I really wish i had the chance to live through when all of it was released, but im glad i appreciate the amazing music from those times.
i just love music so much. nothing is better.

I agree Spellbound there's always been good music, you just got to find it.

That song was waaay out there for radio when it came out. The hammer-on stuff on the the outro solo was virtually unheard of at the time, especially on a Top 40 song... it's actually pretty simple to do if you fingerpick it, other parts of the song are much harder to play, I think.
AM radio was competing with FM pretty hot at that time, and they were open to playing extremely different genres, from prog-rock like Kansas to Donna Summer disco to Earth Wind & Fire funk to punk like the Ramones... all in the same half-hour period. It was good.----->JMS

the biggest misconception about me is that i dont like anything but metal. i like tons of music. classic rock, electronic/industrial, jazz, classical ...lots of stuff.

if i was just limited to metal....that would suck......but METAL BEATS ALL!

I think that is a misconception that a lot of people have.
Metal is awesome I love a ton of it, but some of it is horrible.
It just does nothing for me, I don't dig a lot of bands that sound the same from one song to the next, and if I do listen to them I listen to one or two song and that's it. I used to love Hatebreed but now it's all the same, especially with all these "core" bands out there. It's like theres one really great band and then all these mediocore clones trying to get caught up in a fad. I like all types of music from bluegrass to swing to blues/punk/jazz/some underground Indie hip hop like Eyedea and Abilities, to metal and country. But I only like certain Bands/artists in each Genre. I do not like how many trendy groups ride the coattails of a talented Group to capitalize on a fucking trend. That's why I have no issues with cover bands that play stuff they like to have a good time.
However if you "bite the bullet" as they say, and play stuff just because you think it's gonna turn a buck or because you "have to" in order to book shows, you're a poser and full of shit cuz I know a lot of bands with work who only do originals. Sorry I got off track there, but I have a very short attention span and I get a bit emotional. I do like Dire Straits, the music and the vocals, all rock!!!

I always liked their album 'Making Movies'. Brothers in Arms was a bit too commercial and over-played for my taste. I think Sultans was on their first self-titled album. I saw Mark Knofler play in Eric Clapton's back-up band one time, that was great! He has a very distinctive sound.

Dire Straits was actually the very first band that I seriously got into. Of course, I got hooked on Brothers in Arms, but I was really into their early stuff. I really dig Private Investigations, especially the instrumental part that is the second half of the song. Knopfler's such an amazing guitarist.

You ought to hear Noah Figlin of the Nightcrawlers play that song. With that old Tele he plays through those old vintage Fender amps, he nails the tone also.

My favorite would be Money for Nothin. Reminds me of my Uncle Bo who passed away a few years ago. That tune also is one that made me want to play drums among some others.

i just love music so much. nothing is better.

I was fortunate enough to be making a living playing covers with our band "Fantasy Airlift" during the "Sultans of Swing" era. My brother Tim really nailed that solo, playing through a old Bassman head and a sawed off Bandmaster cabinet.

Even though the song is extremely well crafted, I thiink that the solo is what really makes the song great.

Speaking of solos -- My vote for the best solo of all time is the marimba solo by Bo Wagner in "Moonlight Feels Right" by Starbuck. Holy crap -- he knows exactly where he's going with that thing, and takes you along for the ride.

I absolutely loved that solo. It was miles away from everything out then, went unexpected directions, and the way it segued into the organ solo (which was also really tasty) was the stuff musicians aspire to. It's funny, Moonlight Feels Right is kinda a wimpy song, really, but the vocal was awesome, the production was huge, and the instrumental execution was spot-on, so it comes off as kickass southern rock.----->JMS

I have heard from many a musician (who lived through that era) say that Boston's self titled album was light years beyond its time back in the mid 70's when it came out. I love all those tracks. IMO the vocal harmony and the guitar work is awesome.

Yeah, when that came out, it was like nothing else before it. We smoked a shit-load of weed listening to that album!

"Foreplay/Long Time", "Smokin'"........ There were some really good songs on that. I think just about every song on it became a radio hit.

Now I feel like sitting in a dark room with a black light, burnin one and listening to it!

Then it took them like 4 years to put out "Don't Look Back" and it was a major disappointment.

Maybe we were expecting too much?

When "Sultans" came out, I didn't appreciate it much, except maybe that the solo was "clean" albeit pretty simple. You see, I was an originals metalhead.

You know the type. The "Who the hell wants to be a cover whore and cover these commercial pop songs anyway?" At that time, if a song didn't have symphonic textures or if it didn't have speed metal rhythms and searing solos, it was just another pop song to me. Of course, I should have appreciated it for what it was: one of the better examples of guitar songs of the day.

wow, nice to hear you guys talkin about some different stuff. i thought you all were just metalheads all the way. yeah ,that boston album was somethin. ithink i was in 6th or 7th grade and it was just like fuck yeah thats what i'm talkin about. then they just beat the fuck out of it on the radio and well, you know how that goes ihad to take a long break from that one for a while its nice to hear it now once in awhile,it takes me back to when things were alot easier. oh well i too have a short attention span. dire straits awesome i love mark knoffler and that fingerpickin style. today i listened to jimi hendrix " blues" i love the instrumental version he does of albert kings' born under a bad sign. now that is fuckin heavy. and then a little gordon lightfoot while i layed on the hammock with my babygirl and checked out the clouds makin they're way across the sky. what a day. music rules all.
