I've always been of the opinion that it's up to the artist to do what they want with their art. I never got the fans that walk around like they were slighted because their favorite artist recorded an album that they didn't dig. I'm sick of all the whiners who walk about boo-hooing that Metallica hasn't made a real thrash album is 15 years.

Artist don't owe anyone shit with their art. It's selfish to think otherwise.

on the flipside its selfish for an artist to completely disregard fans. Without fans they would be flipping burgers like everyone else.

that said if their new direction gets them a bunch of new fans, then fuck the old ones.

They weren't boo hooing about it, they simple said they hated it. They also said that they bought, as did I. And speaking of Metallica, they are the biggest over rated band in the history of "metal" - They are no where close to metal. They are sell outs and posers after nothing more than a buck.

Any band that makes money doing what they love is ok by me, even if I think their music sucks. Take blink 182 for example, they suck in my eyes but obviously others do not and they have fun making music. So good for them. On the other hand bands that totally turn their backs on their fans (Metallica) are a bunch of posers as stated above. They used to be the kings of bootleg, encouraging fans to record live shit to build the fanbase that they would eventually assrape by suing napster therefore becoming the biggest bunch of hypocrites imaginable. does that mean they're overrated?...nah just cocksuckers. Overrated is when you're fucking pumped to go see Pantera Live and that day finally comes and the singers so trashed he can't sing a song he's beeen doing everyday for 4 years and the taped rhythm guitar sound whacked and the whole fucking band is not meshing. That my friends is my take on overrated.
As fans you have the right to have certain expectations from the band who created this music they decided to share with you. If I hired a roofer to fix my roof and instead he built a deck because he wanted to take a different route with his trade then the motherfucker should have had the decency to say something.

Metallica STILL rocks!!!! Even if they do suck

All I know is the production values go up on every album after "Justice"
And sorry if "real metal" isn't allowed to evolve in some poeple's opinion. But everything changes.
Are your "HEROS" supposed to be one dimensional? That's rediculous.
You need to expand your horizons son. There is NO such thing as staying the same, you either go foreward or you go in reverse, just like learnin an instrument:wink:

Selling out is actually used to discribe someone who isn't doing what they want to do for a living.
So isn't the "sell out" the weekend worrior who "falls back" on his week day job? HMM

Lot of green people here

You know it is funny that ALL of the bands on the list have at least one song that everybody here likes, even if they don't admit it.
Even if not the most technically superior, these guys have something, a groove, meaningfull lyrics? It appeals to most of the population, so call it what you want and I am sure they are laughing all the way to the bank
Slick 50! Man the first time I read that on the other thread I laughed my ass off!!

I don't see how anybody can smash U2.This band has had the same lineup for over 25 years. They write great songs, and have had only ONE lousy album: POP.
Most of the bands that people have listed have changed so many members over the years it's had to keep track.
I know people will say about Bono's Messiah complex, but hey at least he's trying to do something.
And they still sellout every venue they play.
But hey...whatta ya do

I agree with there being at least one song from each of the ones listed that someone likes.

One thing to keep in mind is that we're not really commenting on a band or artist by calling them over-rated, but rather the mystique or reputation that has been built up around them by uber-fans or the press.

How about looking at a band chronologically. For example the Stones were a great and very influencial band in the 60's even up to the late 70's. What have they done the last 25-30 years? I think you can say the Stones are overrated since 1978.

On my list, my definition of over-rated is a band who I don't personally feel lives up to the hype that is generated for them, and I stand by my opinions. I didn't accuse anyone of selling out or anything.

(Even though my opinion is that Metallica sold out after "Justice")

And I forgot about Queensryche in my Seattle list, sorry. They are not over-rated.

I agree that an artist shoud always respect their fans, i.e. sign autographs; not show up trashed at shows and take a shit on stage; etc., but when it comes to writing music, then the artist doesn't owe anybody anything, except the record label of course. I've used this example before, but I'm a big Tool fan, as I'm sure are many people on this website. If they released an album of three minute pop songs, of course I would be disappointed. But I would get over it and move on, not spend the next 15 years walking around with a chip on my shoulder like Tool personally slighted me by releasing an album of fluff. Just because I bought Opiate, Undertow, Aenima, Lateralus, and 10,000 Days doesn't mean that they owe me a killer album the next time they go into the studio.

I never got into "scenes" and stuff like that because it always seemed to be more about bullshit meaningless philosophy that most people grow out of by their mid-20's anyways rather than anything of any musical substance. I guess what I'm saying is I don't have my self-concept wrapped up in the music I listen to. If I'm having an existentialist issue, I read a philosophical or religious text, not go out and buy a rock album. If I like music, I listen to it. If something doesn't catch my fancy, no harm no foul. It's always been how I looked at things.

This tangent wasn't directed at anyone in particular. I'm just waxing Slick50 philosophy. ;)

And I agree with The Bastard, U2 is an incredible band. They're definitely one of my favorites. I liked a lot of stuff off of POP, though I think it was their most inconsistent album.

Agree with you on both points. Metallica Pre-Justice was great. Post Justice, maybe two or three songs are worth listening to, the rest are Blah ..

And yes, U2 is an awesome band. I always have and always will like them .. :) Not that my opinion matters much lol ..

Dave Matthews and Bruce Springsteen DO NOT have a song I like! :P

If I would've thought of U2 I would've included them on my list too. My wife has a concert video of them that she got as a gift, and it's unfrigginwatchable!

I think fans of GG Allin would have felt he was not living up to their expectations if they went to a show and he didn't take a shit on stage. :?
