Adam Zimmer...mothafucka can play! :D

I don't know that there is a best bassist ever? Its like just one of those unanswerable opinion questions. Adam Nitti is kick ass, and Zimmer is the one that turned me on to him. I also talk to Nitti online a lot, very down to earth guy!

Also, did anyone mention Stu Hamm? Bunny Brunel? Anyone?

Locals I've been pleasured to play with...

Tim Aungst (iva)
Zimmer
Dan Mullan (Moondoggy)
Kettner (probably the nicest guy to ever grace the earth)
Greg Hatch
Used to play with Jerry Valerie, he was on qwick rock a while back, crazy mofo. (intern jerry)

All these guys are cool as shit! The funny thing about being out here, I don't have a bass player in my band. :D If I wasn't a drummer, I would have been a bassist, just don't feel like delivering pizza, that's all.

If you haven't already, hop on over to youtube.com and do searches on Victor Wooten, Jaco, Steve Bailey, Marcus Miller, etc. You will find videos of these guys doing their thing.

I've only been out to youtube.com a few times, so I don't know how old some of the stuff is, but recent highlights I've come across:

Victor Wooten & Steve Bailey duo playing Donna Lee

Will Lee with Oz Noy and Keith Carlock playing the Bitter End in NYC. Raw recording of an instrumental, but kicks ass...

I must mention Tom Keith as another one of the great local bass players.

Thanks for the mention Paul....if Lies, Inc., ever gets out there, I hope you dig the new stuff!

My nomination for all time best bassist (meaning not just chops, but overall musicality, diversity of style, and presence): Tony Levin.

From Karen Carpenter to Alice Cooper to Peter Gabriel, King Crimson, and about a zillion other artists, Tony has added the right low-end "Miracle Whip" to more recordings than just about any other artist I know.

BTW, on a side note....check out Manthing.com, Michael Manring's site....he's doing a few shows in PA this year! Solo bass like yo' mama warned you about!

I realize that we are discussing bass players of world renown here. However, I have played with / listened to a multitude of bass players from all over the globe.

My favorite is still Randy Rutherford from Altoona. Back in the early 1980's Randy Rutherford, Bill Filer, Jeff Michel and I had a band called "Little Brother".

Randy is one of the most musical bass players I have ever had the honor of playing with. He didn't play with his fingers, he played with his head and heart. Of course, he plays every instrument like that.

I like so many local bass players I couldn't pick one. On a national level, I'm goin' with Tool's bass player Justin C. right now. I dig all kinds of bass players for different reasons but he is my favorite bass player right now. His playing on their new disk is way over the top. The 10,000 days cd case has to be the coolest one I've seen in years.

Right on John. I wish every aspiring musician could see Randy play, though they may go home and burn their instruments. :o
... and then the wheel fell off.

Me, naturally.

However, my favorites are (my local hero) Kent Tonkin, and Adam Zimmer. On a national note - Geddy Lee, Mike Dirnt, Duff, P-Nut, Ryan Martinie, and Les Claypool have to be my personal favorites.
