Over-rated

Post by Blain »

This may have been done before, I don't know, but how about a thread on over-rated bands and/or artists?

Here are some of mine - keep in mind, I'm not saying that they've never done anything great, but in my opinion, they are over-rated, probably through no fault of their own.

Pearl Jam
Radiohead
White Stripes
the Rolling Stones
Neil Young
Grateful Dead

I also agree with all the groups and musicians listed. Some of these I could never figure why people think they are great when they are either mediocre or not good at all.

I dont agree with the Grateful dead being on there. They were one band who never worried about airplay. Their loyal following was astounding, any band would be grateful 8) to have that. They made more on merch sales than any album. I was never a big fan but they always had my respect for how they went about the business.

Curious that as these threads show up. Often the bands named as overrated play to the biggest crowds ! And the bands labeled as underrated, only have a cult following.

Ever wonder why some bands around here only have cult followings ?

Case in point. I was a huge, big time fan of early Genesis. "Selling England By The Pound", "Lamb Lies Down On Broadway", etc..

Then they went "pop". I hated them, their pop stuff sucks. They abandoned their core followers, and the core followers complained loudly !

I saw them at a little place in Pittsburgh called Masonic Temple (something liker that) back when they were good.

Then they answered their critics. "In case you haven't noticed, since we went pop, We now play the biggest venues in the biggest cities !"

Did they sell out ? I don't know, I'm asking you. But, somehow, playing what people like........makes sense.

"Overrated" but obviously not underappreciated!

Id give my left and my right nut to do what these bands have accomplished... doin what they love want for a living.

I respect everyone on this forum, but this is asinine. Id trade jobs in a new york minute with any of these bands. Im a little tired of all the judging that we continue to do, myself included.

Aw, come on, have a little fun. Life is all about making judgments. If we didn't do it, it'd be anarchy! Cats and dogs, living together!

It would probably be easier and more productive to list artists who are neither over-rated or under-rated, but it wouldn't be more fun.

Some people may not care for these Bands, "to each their own", but "over-rated"? How many DECADES have Neil and the 'Stones been around? Yep, SO "over-rated". They all have their own niches, and with some, it requires listening with your Heart and Soul to be able to fully hear. As far as any negative thread goes - alas, asinine is as asinine does.

Interesting comment Hurricane about the Grateful Dead...I totally agree with your opinion. However when I think of an 'over-rated' band, they do pop into my mind. I think its because their music typically bores me, not a big fan of most of their music. BUT, their place in rock history is unprecedented and well-deserved. Not only for the reasons you mentioned but for sort of making a new genre (country-rock and jam-rock) more well-known. I am reading a book right now called Haight-Ashbury by Charles Perry which is good if anyone is interested in that era. Another GREAT book about Jerry Garcia is called Dark Star.
Good thread but I knew it would flame some people up...
Chill out ppl, OF COURSE some bands are over-rated but that doesn't mean they are BAD.

See either one live. Most people say that no artist puts as much heart into his performances as Bruce.

As for Dave Matthews, along with the Grateful Dead, they don't need radio or CD sales to survive. To me, THAT is music.

Negative THREAD? All YOU. I only agreed with what someone else said and took it a step further:
ASININE IS AS ASININE DOES. ...and get it correct, I'm slightly whacked at times, not crazy...and I find most people are the same. I don't hate anything, but I would truly HATE to be like you.

Any band that need record sales to survive is over rated a far as I am concerned ... Look at the ones who kill in concerts and don't make the charts: Jimmy Buffett for example - He been selling out concerts for the past 20+ years, before he released his "Country" cd.

It is kinda funny though, when I went to see him last summer I asked some people what they thought of his "Country" cd; they said they hated it, and feel he shouldn't have made it - that is a true fan because in some cases it is true lol ..
