Fortunately, I'm not talking about a club. The Buzz radio station has gone country on us. That leaves us in Altoona with not much in the modern rock genre. This sucks since my work vehicle has am/fm only. We should let them know how we feel about it.

Is this for real? This is freakin' ridiculous! Radio in this area already
sucks bad enough, let alone needing another country format station.
When will it end? I listen to a wide variety of music (of all genres), but
we need a good rock/modern/alternative station around here. It seems
like the cooporate management of our area stations are on a suicide mission as far as getting listeners from a diverse population.

What the fuck is wrong with central PA?
There is not one modern rock station in this place.
Have we become so closed minded that we need only country and classic rock stations, oh and some R&B shit. Oh well, Iguess if you want to hear new music you'll have to check out a live show.
And people wonder where all that angst comes from.
Not a single fucking thing is done for the younger people in this area.
Wow, they might build a skatepark here or there, but they'll shut them down quick as fuck if the kids do one thing that doesn't fit their little picture of perfection. This is bigger than a radio station changing it's format or a club getting shut down, we're trying to go backwards in time.
We need to really evaluate our scene, we've become so fucking
"family oriented" that Jerry Fallwell would be proud to live in anyone of our fine trailerparks. Goddamnit this pisses me off.

There are actually more country music radio stations in west - central Pennsylvania than there are in Nashville and central Tennessee. I was just there last week and going through the stations on the radio. There were only a few country stations. Lots of modern rock, classic rock, classic and new rock mix, oldies, Christian hard rock, pop, Christian pop, jazz, classical, and southern gospel. One station I really liked played such a wide variety of songs that you would have to like something they played. we need a good "no set format" station around here.

The other thing I found interesting is that some of the bands on the Broadway stages in Nashville play very little true country music. Many of them are more southern rock, country rock, and just plain rock and roll bands. One band I heard last week played only 3 or 4 country songs in a 2 hour set and they rocked them out. They mostly played Lynyrd Skynyrd, Georgia Satellites, Marshall Tucker, Steve Earl, Elvis Presley, and even Bad Company and Def Leppard. Most of the tunes they play are old songs. It is rare you hear a band play a song from the last 10 years.

Interesting point in Nashville area. My brother lives there, and moved there as a recording engineer and production manager for a major touring
company. I went down to visit for a few days (approx. 15 years ago) when
he first moved there. Interestingly, I was at a hotel nightclub with him and got to set in playing that night with Waylon Jennings studio/road band. They only played about ten truly country songs the whole night. everything
else was southern rock or blues rock oriented material. The band stated
this was their routine with exception of when they played with Waylon.

This area needs to get up with the times! I like "some" country music,
but don't want to hear it on every station I dial up on my radio.

I don't think people would be comfortable with that. Sure, I'd personally LOVE it, but folks around here aren't so sophisticated, and have a need to pigeonhole things, classifying their music makes them feel smart in their own way.

Nashville's a nice place to visit...
They call it the Music (Business) City. The bottom line is the bottom line, my friends. Who buys "country" records? Girls 12-18, and women 24-40. Expect more cute bois shaking their asses, and "strong woman" songs.

That's because "country" of the past 10 years sucks balls. Everybody good moved to a genre now known as Americana, which is a catch-all term for Honkytonk, swing, country-folk, rockabilly, No Depression, and alt-country. The "country" of the last decade has much more to do with Britney Spears and NSYNC, than Kitty Wells and Hank Williams.----->JMS

You and I are on the same page as usual.

Another thing after I spoke to many musicians there and heard many bands is that they are all playing most of the same songs that we are all extremely tired of playing like Sweet Home Alabama, Gimme Three Steps, Mustang Sally, Born To Be Wild, Brown Eyed Girl, and Keep Your Hands To Yourself, just to name a few.

Also, everybody thinks that country music is the main industry in Nashville and actually it is not.

Insurance and banking are the two biggest industries there now. In addition, many other types of music have risen up there to be very prominent. That is now where many mainstream rock labels are based and search for talent and the Christian music industry is based there. Music is very much a huge part of the economy there and they still play off the country music scene for the mighty tourism dollars.

They have the Wild Horse Saloon, Tootsie's, The Stages, Ryman Auditorium, Grand 'Ole Opry, and the Country Music Hall of Fame. But within the same three blocks of some of these are B. B. King's with nothing but blues, rock, R&B, and jazz bands and the arena that had Rob Thomas and Jewel playing there last week.

Nashville is still a place to go if you want any type of career in music. There sure are some great players there though and tough to break in. As everywhere, good bass players and keyboard players are much in demand.

I'm just going to make my own all metal radio station. Nothing older than 1990 (originally wanted '95 but for the older generation I have to go with '90)

5A - 12P, wake-up with hard rock & grunge
12P - 8P kick your work in the ass with metal (all styles), hardcore
8P - 1A local musicians doing their thing
2A - 5A kids to bed - all unedited: metal, hard rock, grunge.

I'm sure the FCC would shut my ass down, but I'd make it a good run.

WMTL, that's providing no one took that name yet.

Hell yea man, i have XM in my car, it kicks serious ass. If i want modern rock, i switch to Squizz, if i want metal, i go to Liquid Metal, if i want 80's, i go to the Bone Yard. XM has a lot to offer, as well as Sirius, i prefer XM though.

Yeah, XM rules. Hank's Place, Bluegrass Junction, and Track 17, which is Class of '89 country, like Froggy was when they didn't suck. And completely ribbit-ribbit free.
The wife digs Liquid Metal, Bone Yard, and CNN Headline News.

I still listen to the Backyard Rocker, however, and Closet Chronicles, both on Q-94. The Chronicles are brilliant programming personified. Just listen, it's on after the BYR, and it's your education in rock n' roll history.----->JMS

I was a Buzz listener for many years. In the past year or so, the station was going in a direction that I didn't care for. They headed away from Alternative and toward an Active Rock format.

I think the reality is, the owner over-paid for the station, and dumped a lot of money into it, but without any return on his investment. He had a high priced morning team (for this market, anyway), a new studio with brand new equipment, and no ratings and few sales.

I'm bummed that they changed format to Country, but as a business decision it was a smart one.

I had Sirius installed in my car on Saturday.

I always used to listen to talk radio AM. 1290 in the morning has Glenn Beck, he's the funniest political talker I've heard. Totally cracks me up! And I like Mike Savage at 9 PM on 1240. The guy is great, he says shit that most people are afraid to say.

So, no pre-Black album Metallica (when Metallica was actually worth a shit), no Slayer from South of Heaven or earlier, no Judas Priest, no Sabbath, no Maiden....

Yeah - good format.

And I won't even comment on the "older generation" line.....

That being said.... When I moved here from Cleveland in 2000, I was thrilled to have a station like Qwik Rock. Then The Buzz came on and things got even better. Then Rocky came out playing any and all hard rock that kicked ass - from Maiden to modern, Zeppelin to Rage, even hair band stuff. MY GOD! This was the best radio market EVER! (At least for where I have lived.)

WTF?! In that respect, I am actually looking forward to moving to Alabama - there are 2 good rock stations in the Huntsville area, like what Qwik Rock and Rocky used to be.

XM listeners - does anyone listen to the station called Deep Tracks? It was our favorite but in the last few months it is not as good. They seem to be playing more older top forty not 'deep' tracks, although depending on the DJ we've noticed. And Bob Dylan's show is ,well, about as weird as I expected from that freak. Overall, we LOVE XM radio.
