YEAH!

Post by AnimalInstinct625 »

Getting back to your roots is always good. Especially when it means turning up the guitars again.

Image

It seems like Def Leppard is everywhere on television since they dropped Q-prime, and went to HK management. For their new album "YEAH!", the band opted to finally do what MOST established rock bands do and release an album of cover songs. The difference is...Def Leppard didn't choose songs that were quite so obvious.

I have the all the original songs by the original artists, and I must say that Def Leppard's versions are amazing. It's nice to see Phil and Viv working the guitar strings again, and I must say that the recent television appearances were pretty cool. Of all the acts that performed on VH1 Rock Honors, I enjoyed Leppard and Queen's the most.

Image

Album highlights:

Hellraiser - originally done by Sweet. Justin Hawkins of The Darkness has a small vocal part on this song alongside Joe Elliott in the verses. Crank this one.

Don't Believe A Word - originally done by Thin Lizzy, this song through me for a loop because it lacks that huge harmonic Leppard chorus. That factoid aside, it's got a good hook in the riff.

20th Century Boy - An old T-Rex number. It's got heavy swinging guitar riffs that you can almost feel in your belly, but at the same time, it's the kind of riff you want to clap to.

Rock On - Weird, but holy hell! Covered before, originally done by a guy named David Essex.

The Golden Age Of Rock And Roll - I'm not sure if this is Mott the Hoople, or an Ian Hunter solo song originally. All I know is that it's the fun, escapism-type rock music that got me into Def Leppard in the first place.

Stop by the official site, or even the album site and check out the new disc. I think if you sample the songs above, even if you're not a Def Leppard fan, you can at least say they made something worth while.

I can't wait for the upcoming studio album after this tour. The band is currently touring in Europe doing "Gods Of Metal", "Rock The Nation", "Sweden Rock", and "Arrow Rock", before coming to the US to tour with Journey (Leppard closes all shows) to promote the covers album.

A new, rockier, rawer studio album of originals is expected to be underway very soon.

The Golden Age Of Rock And Roll was originally a Mott the Hoople song. I saw them do the T-Rex tune on Honors and it was really cool. They still sound and look great, which are both two things that many of the bands from that era can no longer say. *LOL*

This was a US #1 hit for Michael Damian in 1989. Like David Essex, Damian was also an actor. He was on the soap opera The Young And The Restless.

I own the David Essex version of the song, and must say that Def Leppard's version is much better. :)

Is that the album cover? It strikes me as kinda boyband-y, although it does look like an early 70's boyband, a la Bay City Rollers. Haven't heard the record, so I can't comment on the music.
I was a fan in the NWOBHM days, bought the On Through The Night record (well, 8-track), and the next few records were brilliant, but Hysteria was aimed at young girls, and I've never been one of those. I had a huge Mutt Lange tirade here but backspaced it to avoid flames. :) Anyway, DL did pick some cool covers, so I'm sure I'll make an effort to hear the record.-------->JMS

The CD art is even more fun, with each Lep mimmicking a classic 70s album cover. This is a really cool disk; you look at the track listing and think you only recognize a song or two, but then you listen to it and know half the tunes. A cool highlight is Phil Collen's husky lead vocal on Rod Stewart's "Stay With Me". The dude can wail.

C'mon Johnny, let's hear the Mutt Lange tirade!

You know, I don't care for Shania. I realize there's something desperately wrong with that, but she does nothing for me. The "Any Man Of Mine" video was pretty hot, but then she just lost me. Same with Faith Hill. "Take Me As I Am" was smokin', then she went all pop and I lost interest musically and fantasy-wise.
As for Mutt, "Pyromania" and "Back In Black" were good. Turning the Cars into a pop band, and Shania into Madonna, ... not so good. That's as nice as I can be. Lollipops and Sunshine, motherf**kers. ------>JMS

That's right. Everybody better recognize Rick Allen.

Johnny, I'd better go check my anatomy because Hysteria is my favorite album ever. It's a masterpiece of production and there is no band before or after that has had such a perfectly produced album as Hysteria. I've seen interviews with other rockers on VH1 that have said that that album was one of the best albums ever made.

As for the new album, I've been listening to their version of 10538 Overture from ELO a lot. That was a good choice. If I hadn't known it was a cover, I could have swore it was a Leppard song. I'll be going to get the Wal-Mart version (I have the Target one right now) so I can hear their cover of Space Oddity. Should be pretty good.

The only reason I ever listened to Hysteria was that girls liked it. Sorry, man. I'm sure it's just me... when that record came out, after a really long time since Pyromania, I probably hyped it up in my mind forever, and it couldn't possibly be what I wanted it to be. On Through The Night was raw and hungry, High and Dry was a hard rock staple, Pyromania was complex pop but still crunchy and real... then Hysteria was so... aimed directly at girls. Don't take that as a dig... I love George Micheal's Faith... one of the best-produced records ever, aimed at girls.
I've seen Def Leppard a few times, once at the absolute peak of Pyromania, in '83. I also own a copy of Hysteria... okay, it's the wife's. -------->JMS

Kick Out The Jams, WTF?
Def Leppard is a pop band and should do pop covers.
I don't know whether to shoot myself in the face or just cover a Def Leppard song and fuck it up so bad that it pisses off every single one of their fans. :?

moxham, do you happen to know the original bands who did some of those songs? Looks like there's some VERY interesting stuff that didn't make the CD.

Roxanne!

Space Oddity!

American Girl???? :?

Search and Destroy - Iggy and the Stooges?!?

Wonder if How Does It Feel is a cover of the Slade song? Vic and I were puzzled by the lack of Slade covers, since they pretty much pwn3d the British charts in the era most of these songs came from. Hell of a good song, too.

OK, here's the scoop.

There are actually FOUR "YEAH!" versions out there.

1 - TARGET: They have a live version of Sweet's "ACTION" and a bonus acoustic cover called "When I'm Dead and Gone".

2 - WAL MART: Don't buy the album here. Only buy the YEAH BONUS EP for interviews, and a few other covers including some more Phil on vocals, as well as a Queen song done entirely by Sav (bass). All vocals and instruments on "DEAR FRIENDS" are played by Sav. It's pretty neat.

3 - BEST BUY: Like Target, but instead of ACTION (live) and "When I'm dead and gone you have "No Matter What" live, and an old Lindisfarne song called "Winter Song".

My recommendation is to just go to Target, buy the main album, then to Walmart to buy the bonus disc, and then to Best Buy to by THEIR version of the main album.

Take all three versions to the official site and you can be entered to meet the band.
