I assume that you have two DVD drives. Are they both on the same IDE cable? Are they both recognized in windows? Are you burning DVD's or Cd's? What software are you using? I have had problems in the past with "skippy" Cd's and it turned out to be the software. I reinstalled Nero and all was fine. You can also try to update the frimware on the DVD drive.

1st things 1st. Get the exact model number of the rewriteable drive, go to the manufacturer's website and download the latest BIOS and then update it per the instructions. This fixes 90% of rewritable problems.
I have found that Nero will sit there and wait for you to "insert a blank DVD", but there is no "OK" button to tell it to continue, so it hangs there trying to detect the DVD. The only fix for this problem is to switch to Roxio or some other program.
Another problem that can occur with cheap software is that the rewriteable software (i.e. DirectCD) that runs in background (allows you to use a rewritable disk like a floppy) interferes with the disk burning operation. Disable the rewritable software and try burning disks.

i should have given you more info. both drives are updated. they are on the same cable. both are recognized by windows. everything worked great this way when i first installed them a while back. ive tried i tunes nero and roxio and the same problem happens with all of them. it does not matter if im trying to burn audo or dvd's. it will start to burn fine but about 4 songs into it is when it goes crappy.
hope this helps narrow things down.
the only reason i use two drives is cause my burning drive wont read all my cd's. mostly games that it dont want to read.

If you have Windows Update turned on, check to see if you received an update around the time it started going bad. If so, you may want to roll it back and see if that fixes it.
Also, look to see if you installed anything else that might have affected it.
You also may want to slow the write speed and see if your write buffer was overflowing.
