Music is Music is Music

Post by RobTheDrummer »

Seriously, music is music. What's the sense in arguing over a genre of music? It's all a matter of personal taste. Every kind and style has something to offer in the name of all that is music. From a monotone note to the most complex polyrhythms, it can be music. From monks chanting to zippidy-do-fucking-da! It's all good. If you are so self righteous to think that music you listen to or like is the only thing out there worth a listen, then you yourself don't deserve to toil in the likes of melody nor harmony. In my short musical career, I've played metal, blues, jazz, hip hop, rap, pop, rock, disco, reggae, hand drums, marching percussion, solo drumming, original music, cover music, country, and in a percussion ensemble. I also taught percussion for 6 years. I'm not trying to float my own boat (well, maybe a little :D ) But I respect everything that has ever been thrown my way. It's because of that respect that I love everything about music. So some advice- take a listen to whats going on around you, on the radio, on tv commercials, listen to cartoons (they have some of the most wildest licks and talented players ever!) Maybe you'll see how much music matters other than having a shallow minded opinion.

I think alot of it has to do with the fact that as human beings we are emotional creatures. Since we have not traveled far enough down the highway of evolution to have mood rings for foreheads, we look for other ways to express our emotions.
Music has a way of not only expressing the emotions we feel, but actually becoming the emotion. So a good song can actually envoke the emotion it was created with. I'll refrain from giving any examples but I have a few in mind. Anyway my point was....... shit i forget...

I heard someone say that there are only 2 kinds of music, good and bad. That's what I believe and that's it.

I have Milli Vanilli, Anal Cunt, and Yoko All in rotation in my stereo right now. Seriously though Rob, your post could not be more true. The reason there are so many different musical genre's and styles is because there is a group of people who like each one, and us as musicians usually like all different types of music because we can appreciate what it takes to make it happen. usually...

Anal Cunt is a punk band that has been around since the, (I'm guessing)
mid eighties. They're raunchy, filthy and funny as hell. Kinda like MOD but worse.

Lisa and I would be there, Steve, but we're going to be there Saturday night for The British Invasion. Burgi's is too expensive for a double nighter.

However, I do have The Nightcrawlers CD playing in the overhead cd player at work and people love it.

Very well put, Rob. I will agree with you and add this:

There are some forms of music out there that I don't even consider music. HOWEVER, whatever those forms are and whoever is performing them, it is a form of expression---those person's expressions and their right to express them. Like it not, they are there and if you don't particular care for them, then just don't listen.

If everybody would follow your philosophy, not just in music but in life, maybe we'd ALL be better off.
