I like both also . An all origanal band sometimes can get you pumped as a cover band can if they are good but, if I haven't the slightest clue what any of the lyrics are because all you hear is growling then it's no different than listening to cats fuck fighting ! IMO which is what most of you call metal now a days right ? To me that's not metal it's just a bunch of noise !
I absolutly love it when chics are up front shaking their asses and the more of them that come to our shows and do it the happeir I'll be but, that isn't why I play or is it my main goal, after all I'm married. I'm really all about the show and good time amongst friends and fans !
Spellbound you'll never get laid with that attitude for sure and I guess you def don't wanna go to a S.O.S , HF1, Scream , or Bad Daze show ect. cause there will be plenty of asses shaking, that I can assure you. I love my Metal but, if everyone isn't fucked up and have'n the time of their life and not to mention maybe getting lucky afterwards I'm not into it . You do what you do best Brutal Metal and we will do what we all do best CHICKS and party . Have Fun with yourself if that's what you want but, leave us pussy getters out of it o.k. we love this stuff ! l.o.l.
Btw we have ORIGANALS that make alot of asses shake and we're proud of it !
I'm not try'n to piss ya off man just giving my 2 cents worth !

There always seems to have been a stigma attached to local original music. Perhaps it stems from the days before quality affordable recording technology and facilities were available, and recording quality was always subpar compared to national recordings. Now the quality of the recordings is generally a lot better. When I first started doing the "Backyard Rocker" in '98, I received a lot of cassette demos and recordings. Now, it's all CD or mp3. But a lot of people still have it ingrained in their noggins that if it is "local music," it can't be any good, or not nearly as good as the stuff they normally hear on the radio.
It's also a matter of familiarity. People in general always gravitate towards what they know, and shy away from what they don't recognize. As far as a new or unfamiliar song on the radio, I've heard that the average listener has to hear that song over 100 times before they can remember the title or who did it.
By the way, if you visit this site and other music sites regularly, you are NOT the average listener, you actually pay attention to music, notice it and are passionate about it. Most people - as FatVin said earlier - aren't paying close attention to the music, it is background noise to them. All these folks care about is hearing their favorite song, and if they don't hear it, they either tune to another station (if they're listening to the radio) or the band they're listening to "sucks."
I deal with this issue constantly when doing the "Backyard Rocker." Most of the time, tunes I play on the show don't get much response from listeners (usually they don't respond to a given song unless they really like it or really hate it). And not surprisingly, some of the biggest responses I've received for tunes played on the program have been for - covers and remakes. (Just two weeks ago, when Sherri Mullen was on the show, the song that drew the most response was her version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." One listener even emailed Sherri and told her the song brought a tear to his eye.)
FatVin hit it on the head when he said the word "educate." That's one of the primary purposes of the "Backyard Rocker," to educate listeners that there is quality music being made right here in our own backyard. Hopefully, if people hear various songs on the show enough times, they start to recognize them and the bands and artists doing them. And if they grow to like the songs enough, they then might take the chance of going and seeing the bands doing them.
Sadly, there aren't many shows like the "Backyard Rocker" around, and very few radio stations anywhere willing to take the chance of airing local original music. And I just heard from somebody in northeast PA earlier this week, who told me a station there put a local band on the air, but told the band to do only covers!
Educating the public about your music is the only way to turn them on to it. Don't be afraid to play your original songs - like the tunes on the radio, once your audiences hear your songs enough times, they come to recognize them, and accept them alongside the familiar cover stuff.
And setting up special showcase events, like "One Voice Musical Showcase," is another good way to educate people about original local music. The Underground TV as well. If you can get your music in front of people, and make it a pleasant and positive experience for them, they're more likely to embrace and support it.
I applaud everyone who creates their own music and works to get it out there and accepted. I like covers, too, particularly if a group puts their own spin on a song or takes a familiar song and makes it special. Do what music feels good for you, and have fun with it!
When someone is referring to metal the first thing that comes to my mind is Black Sabbath Judas Priest Metallica Iron Maiden. Maybe im just getting old. I respect everyone else’s tastes in music, but it's gotta be hard to book gigs playing the newer extremely heavy metal that the vocalist utters lyrics that can’t be understood.

And up until he moved out West, it was Rob Bonsell whose ass was shakin' at our shows.
Sorry, with all the photoshopping of me going around, I just had to bust on Bonsell somehow. *LOL*

To me they both have their challenges...The hard thing about being an original band and writing originals is you have to start from scratch and have a real creative writing ablilty to write good songs....with covers tho, the hard part is your trying to sound like someone else so everything has to be PERFECT to make the ppl happy.
Ram Z, I'm sorry, but I personally don't need music to get laid. If you do, I suggest you start hanging out with me.
JimiHat, I never said I'm opposed to girls dancing. What I said was I don't think girls should dance at a metal show, and by dance, I mean the same dancing they would do at one of your shows. I love girls. Don't worry about that.
Spellbound have you seen the way some of the girls dance at a hf1 show? LOL! At times you tend to see a bit of everything. You got your girls who wiggle it like there should be a pole in the middle of the floor and we all should be throwing dollars. I seen some girl dance like a monkey. YOu got some who look like they're in the middle of an fit. What do they all have in common? They're all having a good time and expressing it in their own way.
Look at it this way... if a chic comes to one of your shows and goes into some wild thrashing quivering fit at center stage, then your music moved her to the point she lost her inhabitions and chose to express her pleasure in such a manner.
Ha, I don't need music to get laid either but ,it sure is fun to get laid while listening to music !! I always loved the topless bars for the kick ass sound systems they always have and the music they play, which is alot of heaveir type stuff along with hard rock, oh yeah the boobies too !
I grew up wish'n I could be Vince Neil, Gene Simmons, Steven Tyler and who could forget the self proclaimed sex addict himself The Motor City Madman ,Ted Nugent..... lots of ass shake'n went on at there shows and a hell of a lot more afterwards how could it get better than that ? If I wasn't married I would be a real whore , Blind ,Crippled or Crazy 18 to 80 if they can't come drag em' !
Sorry ladies I'm have'n an eighties flash back when the girls all had huge hair and everyone of them wished they could be a groupie , ah yes those were the days.
Back to the main topic at hand, one thing I never understood was when people say about cover bands , is that almost all big name bands played in some kind of cover band or played cover tunes sometime in their life so why is it such a big deal if you do covers or not ? One of the things that come to my mind is Zakk Wylde, he's all about the party Mr. Death and Destruction and bitches about bands he don't like play'n at the Ozzfest cause they're not METAL and him and Ozzy redo something as non metal as Staying Alive by the Bee Gee's so really what difference does it make if you play GOOD covers that people enjoy? J.P had a good point when he said about like'n it when a cover band puts interesting twist on a certain song or just plays it how they want ,after all didn't ya ever hear a song and say man they needed to put a little something extra right there in that part , well that's the fun of being in a cover band right? You can do whatever ya want as long as it fits and sounds good , it doesn't have to sound exactally like the origanal completely ! The cool part about being origanal is you get to be your true self and let that part shine and nobody can tell you that your not play'n your songs right, oh wait a minute I forgot I had a drunk dude come up to me while we were playing one of our tunes and say in a rude voice " duuuuude your're play'n it wrong you should do it here" and then he tried to show me how ,really he did, can you freak'n belive that shit ? I shoulda gave him the B.C. Rich horns to the choppers for that one. It just goes to show how much people to pay attention sometimes. More cover bands should have all origanal bands at least open for them , cause I think that might help get origanal stuff out more since it's kinda hard to get the real heavy music acts in to some venues IMO .

Agreed...We love to hold a crowd...down this way you have too...If your playing the County Line and you try an ALL Original Nite...1/2 your crowd will leave and head to Peggy's Place to shake to a DJ...and the place will pack!....If you want to play for 10 people then come down...But Johnnie prob won't ask ya back if his cooler is still full of beer!....One thing about our originals is they cover alot of areas...If you want a classic sound (80's style) we Have "Az Hard AZ It Gets" (sex oriented)..and "Beat Me Down" (our 1st brutal original).and we have "2 Much" that the country side likes and you'll see people "at Hillside" 2 step to...and we have "I Fear" that if you like Smashing Pumpkins style..its for you...and alot more...Something for everyone....I'd never bash any original band EVER!...I love what they do...and we have MANY original band FRIENDS..that come and see us and support us...same as we do them....We've asked alot of them to open to help spread the word of their music...and LOOK at my CD player now....whats in there???....HOUSE OF CAIN!!!!....their stuff is "catchy" ..And we even play their CD at gigs and tell everyone who they are listening to...And saying Cover bands are musicians not artists is a can of worms that should never been opened...I know personally that Scream,BadDaze,HF1,Atomic Blonde ect are ALL Talented....and they could all whip out their own rips with no problem. So don't even try to seperate them. Like what was said before.."Just because it's original, dosen't mean it's good"....Playing something everyone KNOWS BY HEART can be tuff too, because with an original, how does anyone know if you made a mistake or not the first few times they hear it?...They do if they been hearing it for years like a cover.!...Not to piss anyone off ,I respect everyone on here thats been doing it..especially the ones that been doing it ALONG time!..
I never understood the conflict...There's room for all of us...that's why there are so many clubs/bars and so many night in a week!...
I never had time for ones that think what they do is better than anyone else...everyone is great in thier own way...if you think your the best...go to Nashville or New York...you'll see street musicians that are trying to make it and would put most of us in our place~...If you think what you do is the best....you've never been anywhere else!
SpellboundByMetal wrote:everyone forgets im talking about METAL
He's right guys... 1st off we werent talking about dancing and second I agree I dance way different to House of Cain and Choking Faith than I do to Hair Force One and Vs. The Earth...Its not even really dancing its moving to the music and well there are always more guys up there...You gotta be a tuff gal to hang on the dance floor of a METAL show
So what was it this thread was about again?? Oh yeah covers vs. originals...
So ppl whats your favorite original song and by which local band is it by??
I'll start...
House of Cain= Serpentine
Choking Faith= Porno Tounge
Skell= Stand Tall
VTE= All Along
(ps there are more but if I dont get there all the time or buy the cd, I only know the song by sound and not name )
Finger Lickin' - The Opposition
667 - House of Cain
Walking a Straight Line - Felix and the Hurricanes
African Echo - The Nightcrawlers
Angry and Shirtless - The Grimm (also one of my favorite song titles ever)
Wicked Truth - Trace Moran
Open Up Your Eyes - Backstreet Law

Originals Vs Covers. Gotta tell ya that I prefer originals for myself, performing or watching. I like diversity in my music though. I have to admit that I went and saw a local "Cover" band last night and was thoroughly impressed. Not so much with the song choices but with the fact that these guys played really well and the front man had the audience engaged. It was really nice watching that kind of interaction.
I think there is a place for all the cover bands and all the original bands and also for so much more.
As far as "One Voice Musical Showcase" the first video production airs Monday nights at 9:00 (and other times throughout the week) and features "House of Cain" on Atlantic Channel 14. This show will continue indefiantely and we already have five or six bands slated. The live gig will happen again but we are probably going to "Open it up" a bit. I think that to help the whole scene then you have to include the whole scene.
By the way the band was "Bad Daze" and although we have some differing opinions I had a great time. I humbled myself and told Rob and the guys that they were by far the best sounding "Right Wing Republican Cover Party" band that I have seen! I was kidding based on previous political posts! Paul reminded me that he is indeed a Libertarian.
One thing is for sure if something does not change then we are all going to have a harder time. Then what is it that needs to be done to get people out? I think people are lazy and just want to sit in front of their TV and not have to think.

...and old sKool's actually a registered Republican. That blew my mind when I found that out. He doesn't seem like one to be pro GOP. *LOL* Satan's pretty apolitical, but I suspect he's actually a centrist since they warn that the Antichrist is going to appeal to a wide variety of people.
Seriously though, it was ultra cool that you came out Dave. Like I said, the beard threw me for a loop there. *LOL* Hopefully Jason can come out too next time. People might think we're doing a custom biker build off if he shows up though.

I've always played both (on any given night ) in every band I've played with over the years. Never had a problem with doing both. You feel the
crowd out, and determine what they are into. You often can put an original in the middle of a set without being noticed, and hey your music is heard! Flight 19 has several originals we play routinely, and we have gotten great response to these. Every crowd has different tastes, work with it!
Hey thanks tornandfrayed! Next time you'll have to introduce yourself. Being from Indiana there's alot of people here on Rockpage I've never met before. Guess there were some other "rockpagers" at the show that I didn't to get to meet either. Thanks again to everyone for their support. As far as covers vs originals- I think if you're making music & love what you're doing by all means do what makes you happy. If others dig it it just makes it that much better.
I've played original music for half my life now with the occasional cover just for kicks. Recently I tried out for a band that plays covers and it was nice to be able to just jump in and click with people instead of having to just "feel" it out. I think I can get along fine doing both as long as I like some of teh cover tunes to start with...
"just because you make somthing doesn't mean it's good".
That's a good point....I think alot of musicians in this area realize that, covers are definately a safer way to go 'round these parts. I have good friends in both cover bands and original bands......I think there are pro's and cons in any kind of group.
Tell me this, what the hell is original anyways? When any drummer plays the drums, it's all been done before. Its not in the least bit original. Drum beats have been goin on for years and years. Metal riffs, blues riffs, rock riffs, it's all been done. At the end of the day, you'll gain more knowlege from playing cover tunes than you will originals.
Point taken Rob, but someone had to write the cover tune you're playing.
Creativity is what makes it original. In other words, put your own twist on "what you stole from others".
Are we really debating what is original and what's a cover?
I thought it was" which do you prefer?".
Sometimes we just get remedial on here in the sake of debate.
"You are now either a clueless inbred brownshirt Teabagger, or a babykilling hippie Marxist on welfare."-Songsmith
What I'm saying is playing covers helps you understand music, song structure, melody, harmonies, and all that good stuff. In my opinion, playing music that is already written helps you a lot. Then when you write, you know what you are doin. Playing cover tunes to me, is another form of learning your instrument.
