I hate metal.
KICK KICK KICK KICK KICK KICK KICK KICK KICK KICK SCREAMING GUITAR HARMONIC KICK KICK KICK KICk KICK KICK
where's the harmony? where's the rhythm?
also for that matter, where's the bass player?
Metal is dead. It has been for years, and here's the thing, its not coming back either. I realize that Avenged Sevenfold has been getting some radio play lately, but thats because they have an incredible vocalist, if you put him with some MUSICIANS instead of four percussionists, some of which happen to be holding guitars, they would sell way more records, and be on the radio way more often.

Listen to some Cynic. Sean Malone is a total bad ass.MeYatch wrote: also for that matter, where's the bass player?
Steve Digiorgio is bad ass too as long as he stays away from a fretless. His intonation sucks.

Metal is always gonna be around. You can't generalize all metal into one stereotype. I like certain types of metal. I don't like metalcore...which may be what you're thinking about, but to each his own. There are some great metal bands out there still. Don't knock an entire genre for one type of band.

I think that the original post is incredibly shortsighted, especially when you take into consideration all forms/genres of metal.
There were some incredible metal releases this past 18 months, from all kinds of genres, and all kinds of bands. Personally, I was really digging the new releases from Cannibal Corpse, The Absence, Ed Gein, Symphorce, Bolt Thrower, Trivium, As I Lay Dying, Torture Killer, The Red Chord, The Ocean, 3, Wake Pig, Demiricous, The Black Dahlia Murder, Unearth, and many more.
You want harmony and melodic guitar chording? Listen to some prog metal. (Dream Theater, Symphorce, Savatage, Fates Warning, Kings X, Ayreon, or Evergrey) There's some good stuff there.
But don't bash metal with a generalization about the whole thing. That's comparing apples to oranges.

I don't like blues, it's all like- my baby, left me! du da da duh da! the other night..
I don't like country, it's all like- there's a tear in my beer (banjo)...ba dum dum dum..my dog ran away (fiddle)..dum dum duh dee.
I don't like rock, it's all like- boom, chick, ba doom doom, chick.
I don't like jazz, it's all like- ting, tin-ta-ting, tin-ta-ting....trumpet solo...ting-ta-ting.
Sounds pretty stupid doesn't it?

I don't like all genres of music but i still give credit where credit is due....a good musician is a good musician and I agree with some other ppl on heres its not really fair to stereotype EVERY single metal band...and just because its has screaming vocals doesn't mean any one in the band has talent. Some bands like Between the Buried and Me, Ed Gein, and Job for a Cowboy (just to name a a couple that pop into my head) have some of the most insane time changes and off time beats that I could imagine you would have a heck of a time following
...Maybe this is just my opinion cuz I LOVE metal but I think that some metal out there today is some of the most talented musicians you'll ever hear, whether you like it or not.

I absolutely love metal and strongly believe that it's the "classical" music of our time. By that, I mean that it has amazing artistic merit as it requires outrageous musicianship and is very complex and textured in its sound. Some people think all metal is noise, but if you REALLY listen, most metal music is really beautiful. The raw emotion and energy are intrinsic to the sound, creating a palpably passionate product.

The times they are a changin'
I like metal. I like playing metal. It sure as hell isn't the classical music of our day and by classical standards, much of it is pretty simple monophony (see medieval music), but I still like it.
I was just having a discussion about a similar subject at the PACAG meeting last night and I'm noticing some trends.
One of these trends is that most people are tired of being blasted with huge PA systems in relatively small rooms. This db-OD is a new phenomenon that's only been around for about 15 years and is attributable to companies like Carvin and Peavey who made large PA systems affordable to anyone in the food service industry.
Another trend is that most people just don't want to hear the screaming and/or pseudo-demonic howling that is inherent to modern metal--especially when combined with the above db-OD. In reality, there aren't that many metalcore fans around and there sure as hell aren't enough of them to support the number of local metal bands in this area. How many are there now? 40? 50? (bands, not fans)
Personally, I recommend just totally ignoring the "vocals" (I still say satan sounds like Charles Nelson Reilly) and check out the instrumentals that are excellent even from many of the local metal bands.

MeYatch- Im just as sick of the crap you play as you are the stuff i play. You dont understand metal AT ALL obviously...and you prob dont have the balls for it anyway.
I dont prefer the gayfull singing that you like. EVERYONE thinks they can sing...and most of them cant at all.
Our singer probably makes you soak your panties, but he has one HELL of a metal voice. EXACTLY what i was looking for.
Of course, i wouldnt start a "Is everyone sick of this light shitrock bullshit soundwaste as i am?" thread. but YOU did one on metal. Why is that?
I even sent your band a message wanting to unite bands and do a show, but FUCK that, man.
Lonewolf- you always seem to think you know everything. I hate to tell you man, you dont know all you think you do. Just because you say it, doesnt make it fact.

Heres on thing I have noticed from my short time on rockpage, its predominantly metal artists. I do like some of that music as I mentioned earlier in another post. But from my last year living in Altoona it seems to me that the only place in town that has metal acts regularly is Aldo's. It seems that just from reading the posts pretty regularly on this site, there are probably more than a dozen metal bands in town. Just looking at it from the outside it looks like the laws of supply and demand are unbalanced for metal here in Altoona. I'm an associate of the owner and staff of the 4D's, which is probably one of the better paying gigs in town, I like the old metal as a listener, so I asked them why no metal bands. They said they don’t want that music because its not crowd friendly, it doesn’t draw, and it don’t sell alcohol. Which does blow, because I love to hear a Pantera lick once in a while, but it seems like the majority of people don’t, or at least would rather listen to something else at the bar.
spellbound by metal, you know nothing of what I play or what I like.
the reason I wrote this post is because I'm sick of hearing from the "death metal camp" on every issue that comes up. quite frankly there are certain things that nobody gives a damn what you think about.
Iron Maiden is good, melody in music is good. 4 percussionists and one vocalist on stage is bad. Leo Fender gave me FOUR strings, and I intend to use all of them.
