When I moved to Philly in '83, my roommate and I would watch MTV in blocks of 8-12 hours at a time. There was pretty much nothing else to compete, except HBO and Prism Channel. I have to admit, I hated the great majority of the stuff they played, but every now and then you'd see Priest or Ratt, which is why we'd watch for so long, hoping to see something good. VH-1 used to be for "grown-ups." It was sort of like PM Magazine (a 1980's local show in many markets, that featured human interest stories and such) 24 hours a day.
MTV is pretty much forbidden in my house now. VH-1 is okay, but only if there's nothing else on.-------->JMS

LMAO! Same here! I think it was the show with the goofball from Public Enemy (Flav????) that was the straw that broke the camels back. I could literally feel that show sucking the intelligence out of my head. I felt a little stupider just after seeing 3 seconds of it while walking through the room! I used to sit up all night during the weekend to watch Night Tracks on TBS when I was a Kid! Our cable system didn't provide MTV. Night Tracks Ruled!

Oh yeah, Night Tracks! I forgot about that. Anyone remember the video show they had on Channel 10 on Saturday nights at 11:30 or so? Can't remember the name. Really cheesy host, what was that show?....---->JMS

Back in the early 1970's there was a TV show on WPGH Channel 53 from Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon called Music Connection that played what was at that time music videos of groups playing either live or with psychedelic backgrounds. There was no host. It was just one music performance after another and we loved it. I remember seeing Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and many other British groups on the show as well as Santana, Jefferson Airplane and some U.S. groups.

It's interesting to me the fashion in which MTV and VH1 have gone downhill over the years.

I remember my MTV heyday was 90-95, when videos were still frequently played. Headbanger's Ball was the highlight of my week, and this was during the end of the hair metal phase, and videos such as Alice Cooper "Poison", Ozzy "No More Tears" and "Mama, I'm Coming Home", AIC "Man in the Box", Metallica "Enter Sandman", and various videos by Motley Crue, GNR, and 80's hair bands like Slaughter, Cinderella, Tesla, and Faster Pussycat were the norm. Grunge videos received a lot of play, and it just seemed like a great musical period in my eyes. Then it went downhill with the advent of "reality" shows.
VH1 was my mainstay programming for most of my high school and college years, as they featured a countless barrage of Behind the Music episodes (and it didn't matter who was featured, they were all entertaining), but again they fell victim to reality programming.

My favorite video shows other then Headbanger's Ball were Stacked (where they played 2-4 videos from one band in a row) and Most Wanted Videos (I remember November Rain was number one for an eternity).

It's really unfortunate for today's youth that they don't have this musical outlet that we had. Of course, today's youth has even more music courtesy of the internet.

There are some upstart stations out there that do run videos (Fuse, SITV), but they are genre specific for the most part.....

So in conlusion...fuck MTV and VH1 because Sportscenter is new every day, twice a day....

There is a music video and interview show on called One Cubed that shows bands from all over the world covering all types of music including metal, pop, R&B, hard rock, soft rock, world music, etc. The show is on a couple times a week and I usually see it from 1:00 - 3:00 a.m. after I come home from a gig on the weekends. Some of the international groups I have never heard of before but some of them are really good.

Ironic ,,because its was that way in the begining....But since they screwed up the programing and made it reality tv...atleast radio still pulled thru

I remember working away in Trout Run, Pa. and they had MTV there(79-80s ? )...I had to go home and tell all my friends about how cool it was(we didnt have cable at home then)...But you don't see me doing that now~

VH1, in my opinion, is WWWAAAYYYY better than MTV.

I like FUSE also. And if you or anyone you know does like rap, Atlantic Broadband's cable channels 209, 210 and up have some good stuff on there as well.

ALL of it is better than MTV.

I don't care to see what foolish things well-to-do rappers like to squander their money on and I sure as hell don't want to see their houses. And if I want to pimp my ride, I'll watch a real mechanics show on SPEED or ESPN where they show cars that you can still put headers and 4-barrels on.
