VH1 or MTV? And Why?

Post by Thumper »

Just trying to prove a point to my 14 year old. From a musicians point of view, wich network is more substantial, and why.

Thumper, good luck getting your 14 year old to realize there's more to music than what mass media feeds them (rap and manufactured bubble gum)

My 16 year old is now on an Opera kick.

VH1 Classic is the best hands down. For what we as a band do and what our musical interests are outside Big Hair stuff, VH1 is just a better station overall. Mtv hasn't played anything resembling a music video in probably 13 years give or take. That's where all the little trendy, Abercrombie kids go for their entertainment. However, anyone with a thinking brain and musical ability should never ever watch EmptyV ever.

VH1 occasionally plays some videos, MTV never does. Isn't MTV just a "reality show" channel now? :x

VH1's "Top 40 Metal Songs" weren't EXACTLY what I woulda picked, but they did have lotsa good shit in there.

MTV is completely musically irrelavant anymore. Pretty sad considering they're the ones who started it all. Besides, you can't see movies like "Rock Star" and "Airheads" on MTV.

Mtv is to music as having your dick stuck in a pair of vice grips is to penis health and well being.

VH1 is definately the way to go. Although all of these stations are pretty much battered by commercials I would still pick VH!.

I remember being very young and listening to Led Zeppelin and not having any ideaa what these guys even looked like. Seems strange now...

Remember when the "M" in MTV stood for music? The station was all about music 24 hours a day and nothing else. Now, you can't find any music on MTV. VH1 Classic is great but I can't get it on my cable system.

PBS has lots of great music shows on that cover all types of music. In the last few months, they have had concerts on by Heart, The Moody Blues, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Three Dog Night, Josh Groban, Brian Setzer Orchestra, and many others.

I don't remember the exact month, but it was 1981, and the first video, was The Bugles - Video Killed The Radio Star. No idea what the second one was.

MTV kicked off something new and different in the 80's unfortunatly they changed, I don't know why they changed a great thing.

When VH1 came around with there behind the music series was also great times, once again they changed something great ( maybe they just ran out of material )

Unfortunatly I don't see MTV2 or VH1 classics to be able to comment on them.

In there current form MTV and VH1 suck

As far as historical value MTV is the one that changed the music industry to a more visual image.

MTV was created by Michael Nesmith of The Monkees. He was doing music video production and he created a television program called Pop Clips for the Nickelodeon cable network. Time Warner later developed it into the MTV network. Nesmith won the first Grammy Award (1981) given for Video of the Year for His hour-long Elephant Parts and also had a short-lived series inspired by the video called "Television Parts".

MTV was first launched at midnight on August 1, 1981. The cable upstart made its first broadcast with "Video Killed the Radio Star" by the British band, The Buggles (a duo that included Geoff Downes of the supergroup Asia and others as well as Trevor Horn, who has played with numerous groups and produced and wrote a multitude of hits).

After the Buggles video, the channel aired five spots introducing MTV's veejays (the spots were played in the wrong order). Then the next music video was broadcast -- the tune was "You Better Run" by Pat Benatar.

Another side note about The Buggles "Video Killed The Radio Star"

Hans Zimmer was invited by The Buggles to help out and play on the song and the video. Even though Hans Zimmer was never an official member of the Buggles, it is him in the video to "Video Killed The Radio Star" in front of the Modular!

(neither should have been ranked high but slipknot took 36th korn got 21st....how the hell?)

I agree, VH1 classic is a great station. I have seen interviews with Geddy Lee & Alex Lifeson, Ringo Starr, with Ian Gillan recently. And they play classic rock videos 24/7 unless they are showing an interview (which usually has videos between the segments of) or a live concert. I have digital just for that station.

I have to borrow some of what RobTheDrummer said, from a Musical standpoint, especially video-wise, neither. They are all about image and not Music. When MTV started, there were a lot of tunes, just seeing the Bands play them was fine - when the videos started being huge productions, they lost me. I hear a lot of people talk about this video and that video and I just smile, for I haven't seen them. Two months ago, I saw part of a Scorpions' video for the first time, the one with the cage - well, I thought it was pathetic. I only have one VH1 and MTV Channel, and VH1 wins hands down, if only for the "Behind the Music" Documentaries. Also, it's one hell of a funny parody for Mad TV and SNL! "MORE COWBELL!" If "Don't Fear The Reaper" comes on and my children are around, one of us says that, never fails. :D I have been watching a lot of VH1 the last week or so.

PBS does kick major Musical ass!
I saw Fleetwood Mac on there over Easter weekend (On a PBS Station in the Eastern part of the state.), and have to say "WOW" about Lindsey Buckingham's Guitar playing!
