Drummers: My new Stick of Choice!

Post by RobTheDrummer »

After haning out at a local music shop today, I think I have found my new stick of choice! I've never used Vater before, but now I'm making the switch. The sticks are Vater Xtreme Design XD-5B. Great balance, great length, excellent rebound, and from what I'm told, they last longer than other brands. They aren't too big, they aren't too small. Great Stix! You should try them and lemme know what you think.

I'm still stuck on the Danny Carey signature sticks. I really like the way the stick gets bigger at the bottom. It totally stopped the sticks from sliding up my hands while I was playing. Great pivot point too. The stick kind of makes you hold it in the perfect spot. I'll check those of yours sticks out. Danny Carey's are a bit too big for playing my V-drums with. I'm gonna be playing my V-drums with my brother next week in Key West :D :P

I'll have to check them out too...I was stuck on Zildjians anti-vibes....but I been breaking them...expecially if one flips over by accident and I hit it with the butt end where the rubber plug is(which your not supppose to do)....if you use these for a while and grab a regular stick you can feel a big differance...solid sticks will feel like you are beating with a hunk of re-bar or ground rod!

Promark 2BL . Hickory, nylon tip. .630 diameter , 16 1/4 length.

Although, I may switch to On Stage Sticks. 2B .625 diameter, 16 length.
I really like 16 1/4 length better. But On Stage Sticks are $26.00 and $12.00 shipping for 24 pair ! Two bricks for $26......I might switch .

I have some Vater sticks. They are nice. But hickory is hickory. If the grain is straight, all brands last the same. The better companies are better at close tolerances for weight and grain and making straight sticks.

Vic Firth - Dave Weckl's Signature

16.25 inches long
.560 Diameter

Not a super strong stick, but good enough for us light hitters.

Definitely not a good stick for Toona!

But their cheaper to give away!

LOL, actually, Randy, my choice in drumsticks is a tad smaller than the Weckl Sig stick. The PM 707 Nylon is basically a 5A with a beefier shoulder and a round ball tip. I used to use the Vic Firth 2B Nylon, but started having wrist trouble, so I went to the PM707. My wrists are much better now, don't have that strain from the logs I used to use. I do hit hard, but I try to use good technique, and I actually don't break sticks that often. Maybe one every other show or so.

You know what bobby, bill turned me on to pro mark stick tape. You should try it! And you don't get the blisters that the dips give you.

Man I kno what you mean about the dip blisters....I use to use zildjain dips too and I have a bad habit of gripping too tight sometimes...side of my pointer finger would get tore up!

A pair of baseball batting gloves take care of the blisters no matter what sticks ya use. Im not sure what brand they are, but richie's music store in altoona has em for 8 bucks a pair, i think they are "nova" 2 A they work for me, last the longest.

I just started wearing drum gloves again, I got tired of the blisters. I don't play as often as I'd like, so the callouses won't set in, so I had to go to the gloves. It does work, but you have to get used to not feeling the sticks in the manner that you're accustomed to.
