Anyone ever dislocate your shoulder?
I dislocated my shoulder on Thursday night. The Humerous was out of the socket, and up pretty far. They reset it at the ER, and I'm on a boat load of meds, to keep me pretty good and doped up until my ortho appt Monday morning.
Anyone ever dislocate theirs? How long were you down and out? How soon back to work and what did you do for work?
I'm basically scared of how long I'll be out of work, like I want to work, and I want to play music, but I won't be able to if I'm all fouled up.

Last Semptmber, I separated the AC joint in my shoulder which is a completely different injury. But, after 6 weeks in a sling, two 8 week sessions of PT, cortisone shots, and an MRI, I am still having problems with it. My ortho wants to do surgery, but before I do anything I am definitely getting a second opinion. All this and they said I had the mildest form of this injury possible.
I couldn't play drums for a month, I think I missed a week of work initially. Not counting appointments and tests.
All I can say is good luck with it!!

The trick with a shoulder dislocation is to reset it ASAP. Kayakers get this injury alot. if you don't have someone reset it in 5 minutes or less, the muscles start spasming, and make it really difficult to reset, as well as painful as a bitch. I dislocated mine once, but it popped right back in, and a week later I was pain-free.-------->JMS

Have to back to work but email me and I'll let you know exactly what I had to go through! Surgery and all. I've broken bones but I think this was the worst pain i've ever felt.

me too
I've done it blocking a kick...and I've done it on the horizontal bar....
Either way....it sucked.
I was pretty lucky. First time it was sore for a few days....second time it was sore for a week or so.
Sounds like you have a pinched nerve.

Yeah,
I dislocated my shoulder like 3 yrs ago on the slopes. Had to get surgery.
When I did the doctor told me I'd know it was healed when I could sleep at night, and not have the pain wake me up. Still wake up like 3 times every night. Not to scare you, but full dislocations are horrid man, I feel for you, good luck,

Basically about 2 years ago in a bar fight I dislocated my shoulder for the first time.....went to the hospital and they put me out then put the shoulder back in. I was probably down for about a week or so and things pretty much got back to normal. I bought a bike...wrecked it doing a wheelie about 60 miles and hours and slid down the street but didn't affect the shoulder at all. About 6 months later working I was pulling myself up onto a trailer and it just popped out again and god did it hurt. Now before this second time i've been working using the arm alot with heavy stuff and really didn't even think about the possibility of it coming out again but.....it did. I drove myself to the altoona hospital from frankstown almost passing out 3 or so times and they fixed it again...putting me out etc....
Then a week later lying in bed I turned the wrong way it popped out again....so again I had to go to the hospital. By this time I was so used to the pain from before I didn't think it could get any worse, so I sucked it up and took it...but it was hard!
After this third time I knew any slight wrong movement it would go because I could just feel how loose it was. So at this point I knew I needed surgery, so I went to see Dr. Port and went from their with the surgery. They did the ortho surgery so I have 3 very small scars....in and out within a few hours. They hooked me up with meds and the pain pump.
We had a gig the next day right after my surgery and we played....I don't recommend that!lol
Anyways, they gave me a cd of the surgery because they have the video inside your arm which was pretty neat. It looks like just water but you could see how my shoulder looked like a dead fish thats been knawed on for days. Now this wasn't a rotater cup...just need aligned and was stiched up. Now it's been about a year and it's good but still it cracks and well I would say it's about 60%....from what the doc told me this pretty much is a lifetime problem even with surgery but it will improve over time.
Here's my advice to you:
WEAR YOUR SLING
GO DR. PORT OR SOMEONE THAT DEALS WITH THIS
DON'T FIGHT..LOL
GET LORATAB FOR THE PAIN AND IT WILL MAKE IT EASIER TO SLEEP...they'll give it to ya. They were giving me 10's all the time.
Just don't wait....check it out before it happens again...but again it really depends on what type of dislocation you had. Now as far as the bicep numbness....not good! Like previous posts....probably a pinched nerve. I didn't have that problem but it your still having it....or coldness of the arm etc....
GET IT CHECKED!!!!
This was so painfull...and from what I read, it one of the most painfull things that can happen to you. So I don't want to go through this again...so just check to see how you are! The second is worse and the more times it happens the worse it will get.

Also as far as drumming, I think you'll be alright depending on the situation. But try to stay away from lifting heavy stuff...and even watch getting in your car and pulling the door shut. I did that after the second time and it popped out and back in and hurt. So just take it easy.
I think the surgery costed about 27,000 but i'm not quite sure...something around that.
MAYBE YOU CAN SUE THE DRUM STICK COMPANY...HMMM...not a bad idea
The damn drum stick was just too heavy

Sublime's right.
Do what you're told by the docs , and it will go away a lot faster.

I had my MRI's read. The Dr. said that my humerus isn't broken, but I've got a labrum tear.
He said full recovery in 3-4 months if I get the surgery. He said he's never had a redislocation after one of his surgeries.
I'm going to call him Monday and ask him some more about it, I'll basically need to get it done ASAP since I'm already missing work.
Subime, I play guitar
And it happened at Judo
Thanks for your insight though.
