Help Get Kids Involved In Music !

Post by Hawk »

This is in the "Benefits" section. But I think a General Discussion is warranted.

http://www.rockpage.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=9232

April 29th, 11:00 to 4:00. Booker T Washington Center, Altoona.

Ed and friends have been working for a few years at this project.

The "festival" is about having as many school age kids show up and find out what playing (making) music is all about. They will get to try out various instruments. And some local musicians have volunteered to help assist the kids with proper technique and install some enthusiasm.

Bands will be playing. Food. Just a good time.

All school age kids are welcome. All Musicians are welcome. Either to observe (which is what I did last year) or to assist. Bring friends , family . Spread the word.

Thats right Hawk!

The Canes are always glad to help out Ed and Cathy on this great cause.

Somthing different this year, instead of just playing through a set of songs, we are going to stop and demonstrate to the kids just what goes on in playing a tune, telling them about the verse, chorus and ect' of a song. Then take questions from them if they have any about the tune.
Show different styles, tempos and maybe dynamics.
This will be fun to try to pull off and hope they stay intrested.

Cya there!

That IS a good idea. Although I'm into performing with a bunch of guys who are really good friends, I really hope to help a kid connect with some of the great things that music offers. I can easily recall bands I saw as a kid, all kinds of music, and the effect it had on me... well, it goes without saying in a forum like Rockpage.
I've already given this some thought... can't wait!-------->JMS

Wish I could be a part of it...I enjoyed last year's gathering much! I was talkin to Ed yesterday about it and how I wished I could give a speech on persuing your dreams through music. I'm just fortunate to have found the right people at the right time and everything worked out. It goes to show that music can be a great part of your life if you persue it. The kids should be given the opportunity to enjoy and explore music early on. When I was growing up, I had no positive musical influences and such. But for some reason, I wanted to play drums. It was through the desire to learn about the instrument that I became a drummer. Throughout high school I learned more and more about the art. I finally got a set of drums when I was 16. And it all went from there. If you can get these kids hooked early on, imagine what a musical future Central PA could have. Look at how Central PA has done so far. We have people as far as Florida to Reno representing now! :D Give the kids a shout out for me!

a question for those who have been there in previous years...

I was thinking of bringing up a drum kit and maybe a keyboard to just set up and let kids play. Would this be appropriate/welcome, or is this already available or maybe it would cause problems for the performing musicians?

I've never been to this event so I can't really picture how it all unfolds...but we're in Toon Town for a show that night so figured I could spend the day and maybe help out somehow....let me know

thanks
I have tiny hands, like a Tyrannosaurus. T-Rex may be the lizard king but he could never play the guitar...

Rob. I wish you were here too.....and I was there ! lol

Brian, get in touch Ed, here's his number : http://www.getclosertothemusic.org/entrypage1.html

We plan to have a drum kit there and a couple drummers have offered to work with the kids (between bands). We'll have a keyboard , guitar, and bass. But please come, all help is appreciated !

It might be a good chance for some young musicians to network too.

You know, I think this event is a really great idea. This is what needs to be happening more in Altoona. There is nothing for kids my age to do besides drugs, fight, fuck, or do something bad. So yeah. I don't know who's idea this was or who organized the event, but it's a great idea and I'm sure alot of people will appriciate it.

But as the daughter of gazoo and lady rock, and the girlfriend of himfag, I must say that I feel there is some trechery a foot. ^_^ You see, I have sat back for the past few months and have seen the things you've said to them. You've done what people my age do; call them names and threaten to beat them up. Maturity seems to be lacking with alot of you.

Now when you go to these events and help kids learn music and look up to you for being a great musician, are you going to hunt them down and beat their faces in if they say they want to be a DJ? Or that they don't like your music? I'm sure none of this will happen, it's just I love how you all seem to be doing it for the kids and for the love of music while you hide the fact that you love sitting at your computers fighting over other peoples opinions and irrationally making judgement.

Please remember to remind the kids to never be a DJ, not to like the hurricanes, and to NEVER disagree with any of you. =]

But all in all, it's a pretty nice idea.

I don't quite know where you're coming from but........This is a public forum and many DIFFERENT people say many DIFFERENT Things. You can't possibly lump "Rockpage" into one unison voice. After all , it is a place to express opinions.........as you just did.

Ed and Cathy's concept is for the good of children......simple as that ! Nothing more, nothing less.

Hope you can make it.

First of all darlings, I am a female. I rock the vagina.
Secondly, I didn't disagree with you. I said it was a really good idea and that Altoona seriously needs more events like this. Kids look forward to the beginning of school for the dumb football games. It's shit having nothing to do, and I find it constructive and a really great idea.
None of that is sarcasm.

And my username is a noob. I'm not. I've read alot of what goes on here.

Also, I know you're not all one. It's just alot of people have given my parents and boyfriend hell for simply speaking their opinions and being themselves. They do what they love, just like everyone else should. And of course you have your opinion. I like to debate, so I won't slaughter you if you have a differing opinion. (Unless you're a flat out jerk, like I'm expecting someone will eventually have to accomplish)

Naw. We appreciate and encourage discussion here...and that takes different viewpoints.
I like people to make me think , cause I won't do it on my own.

As long as people don't get personal , it's all good.

Hurricane, it was not meant to be a rude remark towards you. But rather to anyone, and everyone, who has ever tried to change someone just because they think or act differently than themselves. Mother and gazoo says still that the invitation for din-din is open if you still wish to attend. Maybe while you're here, you can teach me to play my guitar.

Happy birthday Hawk. =]

Hurricane! I can't be that bad of a person if I bought my daughter and her boy friend each a gitar so they could be creative together and do other things besides every thing that gets her in trouble. I considered buying her drums a long time ago, but I was afraid it would put a whole new meaning to migrane!

What a shame there had to be totally un-constructive, negative BS on this most positive thread. :(

Get Closer To The Music is also trying to build a "loaner" program. If a child is interested in playing an instrument, but doesn't have one, Ed would like to be able to lend one until the student can get his / her own.

So if anyone has an instrument that you don't use any more, consider adding it to the loaner program.

Thanks

Thanks Bill for all of your hard work in this project for GCTTM. Ed and Cathy put countless hours into this and they can use all the help they can get. Also thanks to the bands performing. Haven't see anyone lately so I can't wait to get out and mingle. Plus I haven't see .00 Buck at all yet. Rock on people!!!!!!!!!

Get Closer

Post by tornandfrayed »

Get Closer to the Music is a wonderful thing that Ed and Cathy work their ass's off for. We went to this last year and it was a blast! I fully expect this year to be no different!

Angelfucker since you "rock the vagina" and are female you would not happen to be a lesbian would you? How about a wiccan lesbian? Just asking and kidding at the same time! Sort of... Maybe....

Your people got bashed a bit but a lot of people stuck up for them too! Lighten up!

And come to this event if you want to see people at their best. We all have bad daze but we get back up and make ammends and then move on and learn from the bad. I get fricking lemons everyday all that really does is give me a shitload of really good lemonade!

Everybody else I will see ya'll at the gig!

Sounds great.. I'm planning on bringing my son. This made me think... When I was eight years old my mom's boyfriend gave me a "45" of a local band at the time, "The Front". It only had two songs on it, but I wore it out. Twenty years later, while on a Backyard Rocker special, I mentioned this to John, of Flight 19. I knew that he was a member of "The Front". I told him, I still have the "45" and shook his hand. I think he was a bit suprised...?

You never know how many kids you are inadvertently getting involved with music...
