Python skin on a guitar body
Python skin on a guitar body
I'm building a guitar right now that is something that i've wanted ever since I seen Warren DeMartini using one back in the 80's. I'm going to apply python skin to the entire guitar body. I'm not exactly sure about the best way to go about it. I got a suggestion from another forum. They suggested that I take the guitar and snakeskin to a saddle maker. It seems to make sense to me, but I don't know of any around here. Can anybody help me out?
you could talk to some of the traditonal bowyers out there. there are many that apply snakeskin to traditional bows. recurve and longbows. there is one site that is very popular that has many extreamly experienced bowyers on it. http://www.bowsite.com/bowsite/tf/lw/THREADSX2.CFM you could do a search for info of applying snakeskin to bows. these guys would probably know most about it cause of applying snakeskin to wood. i have a bow with the snakeskin treatment.

I have probably done at least 20 of the python skin covered bodies. here is one I did on a copy of Warrens original snake skin body.(even the control route and knob placement were just like Warrens original) which was more a Jackson body with the 8th inch route around the body not half or 5/8ths. you will run into problems applying it to a stndard strat style body as it will not want to lay right.
Warrens guitar was actually done in 4 pieces, the top was a single piece, the back was 2 pieces as the belly contour was seperate, and the edge of the guitar was done in one single piece which totals 4. they were glued on and not stiched together so taking the thing to a saddle maker would be useless because with sewn seams it will be sort of scratchy and not smooth like it should be. Check the pics out as this was done exactly like DeMartinis.

Get a hold of me and I will hook you up.
