If you're taking the time to bump a thread, you really could be using it elsewhere to actually PROMOTE the show. Tellinga co-worker or even a stranger on the street would be more effective than continuous bumping. I really believe bumping is counter-productive. Just a thought.
And I DO understand that the offenders are excited about their music, and that's awesome! I also agree promoting your band IS crucial. However, if bumping threads on RP is a big part of your marketing strategy, you might want to explore other no/low budget options.
I have to disagree.
I've gone to a number of shows that were constantly bumped to the top. I don't know about other posters, but when I look at the Upcoming Shows thread, I only go down about 1/4 the way before I quit looking. I automatically assume that any show further down has happened last week, and then there's no point in looking any further.
I think that it's great when people on here are promo whores (I know that Rob and I are

). It's the guys who are promoting that aren't whining the next day that only 10 people came to their shows. A lot of people say that Donald Trump has an ego. I say that if he doesn't think that he's the best real-estate developer, then why the hell should I think he's the best? If someone doesn't think that their band is worth coming to see, then whey should I think any differently?
Just my 2% of one dollar.
