The very best places to play

Post by ASB10 »

I was wondering (and a thing like this may exist already), but there should be some sort of list (not even an ordered list), but a list nonethless that would show the best places to play in western and central PA. Of course a large part of this list would include PGH and PSU, but there could be some sort of list of the clubs and venues in secondary towns that have the best crowds, best sound, stage, pay, owners, etc. There could be some sort of qualifier designed. Once again, I would hope that this wouldn't step on any bar owner's fingers, but it would be interesting to see what musicians, or the average local fan thinks about the best venues around....just a thought, because it could really produce a stronger scene if fans and musicians know where the best places to play are, and maybe it would convince some other owners to step up.

You know, I was just speaking with another musician earlier this week and I said that a lot of musicians neglect a certain venue that's been around forever, doesn't charge a cover (though a few do, which is stupid cause you pay dues to be a member), and has some of the nicest patrons: VFWs/Legions/Mooses/ect. This use to be my father's bread and butter and he had a gig every weekend. The downside is these types of places might only book bands twice a month; but if you play music that could be targeted to a 30+ aged crowd, I urge you to give a VFW or a Moose a call and see if you can book a gig.

The problem with a qualitative list is... who is going to be the final judge of the quality of the different venues? Everybody has a different opinion about every club. It would be nice, but practically impossible to be fair and unopinionated.
... and then the wheel fell off.

I agree it would be hard to rate them and different bands will feel differently about each place.

What would be nice would be an area where a bar could post what they have to offer, what kind of music their crowd likes, what they have for a system (if any) and other info that may steer the right band to the right club.

As far as clubs that don't pay I think that still goes in the general discussion with a big red flag
