Paper or Plastic?
Yet another mundane and non-musical topic of discussion.
On the one hand you got your brown paper bag. Very sturdy, but weakened by considerable amounts of moisture. While it does take several trees to make a paper bag, most paper is recycled these days and is easy to recycle again. So that makes it a very green choice. The look and feel of brown paper is natural and somewhat nostalgic, which is generally pleasing. But the only proven way to carry a brown paper bag is by utilizing the 'underarm' technique. (placing the underside of your forarm beneath the bottom of the bag while keeping your arm bent in roughly a ninety degree angle, thus balancing the weight of the bag against your chest.) With this method you can only carry up to two bags at a time. Three if you're gifted. Picking the bag up by the open top may cause tearing and possible loss of contents.
Then on the other hand you got your modern plastic bag. This container is very sturdy in its on right, but not quite as durable as the b.p. bag. Carrying cangoods may create issues, such as breaching the seal or simply ripping holes in the bottom. This dilema is easily mended by'doubling up' the plastic bags. Their mass produced availibility allows this to be common practice. And though some may enjoy the rustic 'stucco' appearence of a brown paper bag, still others will admire the trendy 'glass and steel' quallities of the modern plastic bag. But when it comes to comparing the amount of bags one can carry at a time, the brown paper bag falls way short of the convient handle on the modern plastic bag. I myself have carrried over ten bags at once. Depending on the content weight, I can usually hold and an average of one bag per finger. And finally there are the water proof attributes of the modern plastic bag. No matter how wet it becomes, the plastic will remain structurally sound. It is for the latter two reasons why I've been loyal to my own 'plastic' preference for many years.
What's your choice America?

Don't worry about it.
At the stores I do typically say "plastic" and at times, depending on what's in them, I've hauled 8 in. Although, what else I've found works for heavy items (A lot of canned goods.) is paper inside of a plastic bag. Especially for vacations, such as when packing boxes of any kind of food for the shore or camping, double plastic bags with a brown paper bag inside works great.
Everyone should recycle their plastic shopping bags. Even the small grocery store up here recycles them. I can't believe that some people still just throw them away. They take forever to break down.

The only downfall to plastic bags is that you can't cut spooky faces in them and wear em' on your head ! ( note : don't stick plastic bags over your head to try and make spooky faces ).
I always think of unloading the groceries as a challange. Whenever my wife grabs the oversized packages of paper towels and t.p. then heads for the door the game begins. I try to see if I can get all the stuff in bags at one time and I usually do, before my wife gets back out to the vehicle. I don't know why but ,I just like say 'n " don't worry I got it, that's everything ". the biggest challenge is get 'n everything up the steps without the dog cause'n me to take a dive bomb face first into the floor . That has happened before and it isn't pleasent ! Most of the time I can get one bag per finger but, there are occasions where I might be able to get three.
The old pinkey is better suited for hammer on's, pull off 's and boogie pick'n than carry'n bags though.
I reuse the plastic bags for all kinds of stuff but, they make dandy trash bags for in the smaller cans like you would find in a bathroom. I burn all of my trash so I don't have too much garbage to get rid of, maybe once every three weeks or so and that's mainly just soup cans and glass. I haven't had a garbage bill in years.

Plastic. As plastic as I wanna be. The answer to the age-old question "why are we here?" The answer is "plastic".
But just as you can't cut scary faces out of a plastic bag like you can a paper one, you also can't make generic book covers for kids' school books with plastic bags. Ah, the small sacrifices you make for convenience...
In reply to the dry stuff/popsicle stick OCD thing; I have no problem touching popsicle sticks with my fingers, but when my tongue runs across one while eating a popsicle, it gives me the willies big time. Pretty much unavoidable, but I do try.

I've never really had a problem with pop-sickle sticks, but I don't like to handle cardboard boxes for the same reason.FretBored wrote:Dude my wife has that problem.bassist_25 wrote:Plastic

Do you also hate to touch a popsicle stick?

Good one Hurricane !
I can't touch paper of any kind without my hands gett'n sweaty, not that it bothers me to touch paper, but I have no idea why my hands sweat when I do. This makes it very hard to wrap beans when required to do so. A friend of mine used to gag and make weird faces if I would pull a popsicle stick through my teeth, he said that feeling is worse than finger- nails on a chalk board to him ! The only thing I don't like with paper is when ya fold it over, pinch it, then drag your fingers across to make the fold complete. God I hate that, reminds me of being in school.

Last weekend, my printer ran out of ink, so I had to write setlists the old fashioned way (with a Sharpie ... LOL). I started writing them at home before I left for the gig but my wife made me stop because the Sharpie writing on the paper, "sounded like styrofoam."bassist_25 wrote:I've never really had a problem with pop-sickle sticks, but I don't like to handle cardboard boxes for the same reason.FretBored wrote:Dude my wife has that problem.bassist_25 wrote:Plastic

She hates styrofoam. Gives her the heebie-geebies.
She won't eat peaches because of the fuzz. She won't even drink peach flavored tea because of the fuzz (they take the fuzz out of the tea, BTW). If you say the word, "peach" around her, she will literally shiver.
As for me, neither paper nor plastic necessarily bothers me. I use the plastic bags as road cases, too, JMS (sux when they rip out the bottom).
My biggest weird pet peeve along these lines is mushrooms. The texture reminds me of what an eyeball would feel like if you bit into one.

That's what she said.

OMG! I thought I was a freak about paper bags and popsicle sticks....I can't stand touching them. And touching a piece of chalk is plain torture.bassist_25 wrote:I've never really had a problem with pop-sickle sticks, but I don't like to handle cardboard boxes for the same reason.FretBored wrote:Dude my wife has that problem.bassist_25 wrote:Plastic

I say plastic..mostly because I hate the feel of the brown bags...and making two trips to the car to carry in groceries is unacceptable.
