Right and Wrong

Post by onetooloud »

I was just in a debate with a few people and I said there is only right and wrong!!

Some agreed there was only right and wrong , but added most people nowadays see gray areas. I said that maybe so but that does not make it right.

My point was if you think for 1 second that you may be doing the wrong thing its wrong peroid.

If feel thats the reason this world is as f$$$ed up as it is!!! Too many people want to get as much as they can and give a damn about few.

I'm not for 1 second going to do the wrong thing for my personal gain

Yep I've had a couple of beers, but right is right and wrong is wrong.

What ya say?

Murder = Wrong

Killing somebody who just abducted and killed your child = Right or Wrong?

Certainly it is as wrong as any killing, but I surely see a gray area.

Moral standards, Religion, government, upbringing, society. Everyones outlook, their outlook on Reality, is different depending on circumstances.

Right and Wrong is personal and different.... That is until your personal world clashes with someone elses.

Every person supposedly decides for himself what is right and wrong when it comes to such "personal" and "private" matters. My generation was told, "If it feels good, do it." Today's generation is being told, "Obey your thirst."

You have to factor opinions into the mix.

I don't think that not going to church is wrong. I'm sure there are some die hards here that say you have to go to church and not believing in anything is wrong.

I'm sure there are people out there that say drinking is wrong.

Anywho, I'm in for a beer.

It's ALL various shades of gray. Believing that anything and everything is either evil or righteous is the path to religious fanatisicm.

Ron, some months ago, you said: "Everyone has to believe in something. I believe I'll have another beer." Then, it went on like this:

YankeeRose wrote:Ron, if you're starting a new "Church", can I be a Charter Member?

Ron wrote:No problem. And I seriously think about it every year around April 15th.
Hmmm.... Rastafarian sacrament anyone?

Also, consider the money to be made from the Spaghetti dinner after "mass"!

...and I can't recall whose sig. line it is, but IMO Ben Franklin put it best: "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy". :D

Wow, this is just insane! People will have opinions on what they feel is right or wrong, so who's to say what is right or wrong? There are certain things that we can all agree are right or wrong, but for the most part, it's about opinion....which makes this thread really really really really not good. SO,

This thread is wrong.

and Bill, the Left is wrong and wrong is the left. HAHAHA! :D (just gettin on your case)

What somebody does within their own sphere of privacy is their business and can be as gray, chartreuse or polka-dotted as they like.

When actions become public and involve others, all behaviour can be classified as right and wrong, black and white.

The end does not justify the means if another has been affected wrongly by those means.

There it is in black and white.

right or wrong for who?

When I was in my twenties, with no personal ties, family responsabilities, and also no clue I always did what made others happy, and thought that was right!

Only problem is that I found out people REALLY don't give a shit about wether you are right it is all about wether they AGREE with you.

Ten years later and maybe a stomache ulcer or two, I do what is right for ME and my family.

Someone is right when you agree with them. period. Someone is wrong when you think they are wrong. Simple as that.

The big man in the sky will give you all the answers you need when you need them. Right and wrong are personal issues different to each person, and nobody will ever agree 100% with everyone else.

As far as doing something wrong for personal gain, well if you ever worked on a Sunday I'd say you were wrong. ME too. So almost NOBODY can say that they would never do anything wrong for personal gain. That is just the beer talking

For all those affected.

Intentions, whether good or bad or ugly, are irrelevant. Thoughts, whether good bad or ugly, are irrelevant. Only actions are relevant to right and wrong in a free society.

Working on Sunday is an action. Believing that you will go to hell for it is a thought. Since working on Sunday doesn't cause harm to anybody, its now right in the eyes of society at large and thats what counts.

The Blue Laws are a good example of a supermajority wrongfully imposing their beliefs (thoughts) on society, albeit with good intentions.

It looks as though we still have a ways to go on that free society thing. :D

I was going to post a tangent about subjective morality, cultural relativism, existentialism, and utilitarianism, but I'm just going to quote Doug, because he pretty much hit the nail on the head.
"He's the electric horseman, you better back off!" - old sKool making a reference to the culturally relevant 1979 film.

The beer was pretty good I hope noone defiled it.

The right and wrongs I was thinking of where much along the lines of what wolf was thinking. I was talking about generally accepted rights and wrongs within a soceity.

Only when talking about thoughts or beliefs. In the context of this thread, thoughts and beliefs are irrelevant since they cannot violate another's rights. Only actions can do that.

In a free and equal society, when Person A violates Person B's "rights", Person A is wrong, period. Black and white. It doesn't matter what Person A thinks or believes.

A person who acts like Person A on a regular basis is considered Anti-Social.

"And I am reminded, on this holy day, of the sad story of Kitty Genovese. As you all may remember, a long time ago, almost thirty years ago, this poor soul cried out for help time and time again, but no person answered her calls. Though many saw, no one so much as called the police. They all just watched as Kitty was being stabbed to death in broad daylight. They watched as her assailant walked away. Now, we must all fear evil men. But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men. "-the boondock saints
