Rick Rubin to Produce Next Metallica Album

According to the official Metallica site Rubin is to produce the next album. This could be what they need now that James supposedly has his demons under control. Hopefully he helps them get back to their roots of the old school Metallica we all miss so much and gets Lars a new snare. http://www.metallica.com/index.asp?item=14828

Yeah I agree it has its momments, but nothing like the first 2. Same with his work with S.O.A.D. This merger would of blown my mind back in the day when he was fresh off the Beasties, Slayer and Danzig era. Anything could be better than what Bob Rock did for the old school fans.

i'll say; the danzig stuff (especially danzig 4) ranks up there with my all time favorite discs. and i don't care what anyone says- slayer's "diabolus in musica" is a masterpiece. the super lo-fi production on the new slipknot sounds like it was recorded in my asshole.

I personally am a huge fan of the latest metallica CD. It's in the car every day when I drive. Been in there for months & will probably continue. I love the old stuff just as much as the next guy but lets get real here people. I know we're in a state that's about 20 years behind and in a town that's stuck in 1986 but bands, people & music change. Just because Kirk isn't playing a solo every 4 bars & the time changes aren't from and justice.... doesn't make it a bad CD. I like bands to exparamnet & change. Not write the exact same style their whole existance. It just gets stale without some kind of change.

I couldn't agree more! Of course, most of the people here know how I feel about the how Metallica thing: If you don't like their new music, then that's fine. I just don't want to listen to the whining about how they don't play 10 minute long thrash epics anymore.

Anyways, Rick Rubin is a brilliant producer, and I'd be interested to see what he does with Metallica.

I like the last Metallica album too. Way better than the previous few. "Frantic" and "Sweet Amber" have some ballbusting riffs. I totally agree about Slayer's Diabolus. Its up there with my all time fav Slayer albums. God hates us All was good too. But not quite as good.
I havent heard all of Slipnots last album. Because somebody never burned it for me. (and you know who you are) But I really like 'Before I Forget' I know its a little more 'poppish" if you will, but I still love it. All I am saying is give RICK a chance!

The best that a producer can hope to do is to augment and enhance what the band already is. James lost his demons and Metallica lost any edge that they once had, sorry. They will put out albums and they will be OK but you are going to have to look to others to get the feeling that you first got when you heard "Battery" for the first time. Not quite and epic but man oh man did MOP rock!@ I think that they are "Safe" now, safe from their demons, safe from danger and safe from the possibility of creating anything truely unique and shocking. Fuck, My mom likes Metallica now!

As far as the production, we will see. I would like to see Rubin piss them off and give them something to write about. I know that the concensus on this board is that music with meaning is too much to handle but I still prefer passion over complacency! I would like to see Cliff Burton come to james in a dream and tell him

"Too Fucking bad that your fucking feelings got hurt you little fucking girl!"

Then James could go beat the shit out of Lars and maybe they could write again!

I think that Kirk will do whatever they tell him to do.

I guess we will see! Just a thought nothing personal!

i would rather listen to "frantic" than "fade to black" anyday of the week. i don't mind metallica changing their style; i was never a huge metallica fan back in the day. i don't like them anymore now then i did 15 years ago. i'm more of a slayer guy. i'm just not a fan of the super lo-fi production values some bands are going for. there's a difference between sounding raw (superjoint) and sounding like a mike set up in a basement (slipknot).

Agreed, Slipknot's production on the last album was bullshit. I can't really stand that sound and if Metallica gets it on this album, I'll probably dislike them even more than I do now. Although can it get much worse than the snare on the last album they put out? Haha...

I never said that I don't like the stuff before the Black album, I've said that I did many times. This crap that they put out now is NOT METAL. The last album was practically down tuned nu-Metal with a shitty snare sound. Sad But True.

Rick has been a successful producer dont get me wrong......
but its funny to me that Metallica is using a producer that has worked on Hip Hop albums "Jay-Z",
especially because rick was pulling the whole, "Im the producer, im gonna be in the video like Puffy thing" .....
I dont know its just strange for one of the all time great metal bands......
