What Are Your Favorite Guitar CD's?

Post by ToonaRockGuy »

Okay, this may have been done before, but don't be misled by the title. The question I'm asking is what are your favorite guitar albums? Curious as to what people prefer judged by the whole body of work, not just a solo or a style. It can be any genre, any artist, and not limited to instrumentals. I'll start, here are my personal top 10, with the guitarist(s) in parentheses.

1. "Live At The El Mocambo" - Stevie Ray Vaughn
2. "Extreme II: Pornografitti" - Extreme (Nuno Bettencourt)
3. "No Rest For The Wicked" - Ozzy (Zakk Wylde)
4. "Superkalifragilistic" - Eddie Bush Group (Eddie Bush)
5. "Dirt" - Alice In Chains (Jerry Cantrell)
6. "Slave To The Grind" - Skid Row (Scotti Hill, Dave Sabo)
7. "Vivid" - Living Colour (Vernon Reid)
8. "Powerslave" - Iron Maiden (Adrian Smith, Dave Murray)
9. "The Fillmore Concerts" - Allman Brothers (Dickey Betts, Duane Allman)
10. "Apple" - Mother Love Bone (Stone Gossard, Bruce Fairweather)

So let's hear yours!
Dood...

Anything that DIME played on obviously kicked MAJOR ass.

Also, John Petrucci from Dream Theater rules!

Ozzy Osbourne - No More Tears (Zakk Wylde)
Joe Satriani - Crystal Planet
Dream Theater - Train of Thought (John Petrucci)
Shadows Fall - The Art of Balance
Yngwie Malmsteen - Anthology
Vinnie Moore - The Maze
Steve Vai - Alien Love Secrets
Morbid Angel - Domination (Trey Azagtoth kicked my ass on guitar as a teen metalhead)
Cryptopsy - None So Vile (most brutal guitar work EVER)
Arch Enemy - Wages of Sin (Michael and Chris Amott) and Doomsday Machine (Michael Amott only)
Nevermore - Enemies of Reality (Jeff Loomis)

Marty Friedman has out a solo disc that my guitar instructor had given me but,I can't find it now. It was slower stuff but it was some of the best guitar work I've ever heard. I wish I could find it again.

"Live At The Fillmore East", "Where It All Begins" and the 2004 "Instant Live" CD, when they closed with "Layla" - Allman Brothers Band

"Rust In Peace" - MEGADETH

"The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion" - The Black Crowes

"Wildflowers" - Tom Petty

"Dark Side of the Moon", "Wish You Were Here" - Pink Floyd

"Van Halen" - Van Halen "Eruption" alone gets it on my list. For me, this CD (I might even still have the 8 Track!) has stood the test of time. (...and I agree, many of their others belong on the list, too!)

I love all kinds of Guitar playing, all across the Musical spectrum!
I have a lot of compilation, "Anthology", "Essential" and "Best of" CDs. They showcase IMHO the best work, have a lot of tunes on them nobody ever hears and some include "amazing" live cuts. In addition, there are also those who have far too many Albums to list them all:

AC/DC, Aerosmith, The Beatles, solo too, Black Sabbath/Ozzy, Bread, Clapton, solo and with Cream, CSN & sometimes Y, solo too, John Denver, The Eagles and solo,
Frampton - also with Humble Pie, Hendrix, Journey, Led
Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Nugent,
Santana, SRV, Trower, Van Morrison, Winter. There are many more I "so" admire, I just don't own yet. Then again, there are those I used to own, but we won't get into THAT. :D (I do love Godsmack and own all 4 CDs, but when I quickly think of them, sure they have many kick ass Guitar solos, but Vocals, Drums and other Percussion are what are prominent in my mind more so than Guitars, from "Alive", "Voo Doo" to "Serenity".)

I try not to pick just one cd, or just a few cds for guitar. I'm inspired by a lot of things. As much as Satch makes me happy, so does some industrial outfit bashing away.

Some good answers from you guys though.

I would say that my favorite is probably both Scenes and Introductions from Marty Friendman. I also like Pretty much all of Satch, and Via, as well as George lynch. David Gilmours' about face was pretty good also, then anything gilmour did was good. As well as a slew of others.

It would also depend on the type of music. Diff Genres bring diff people ..

I could take several pages listing all the guitar albums I like. For the moment, though, I'm just going to mention a current album I listened to for the first time this week (and am listening to right now), with lots of guitarwork that I'm liking a lot - Avenged Sevenfold's City Of Evil. Damn good stuff!
