Is Rockpage going to hell?

Post by byndrsn »

Seriously, people.

I mean, I used to be bitched at for talking political on this forum. I then "went away" for a while. I am sort of back and I am noticing something that is disturbing.

There are more people on here that are assholes and will not identify themselves. This is stupid. If you do not have the courage to say what you want AND let everyone know who you are - then your opinions are worthless. I guess the worst part of this is that many of us continue to feed these imbeciles. (By the way - on another forum that I belong to, someone posted something that said it is now illegal to be a troll. I guess you are allowed your right to free speech if you identify who you are, but if you "annoy" people and don't identify yourself - you could be breaking the law - I need to try to find that post again!!)

In addition, what is with all the ex-TV personalities like the Cliffs Clavins, Fred Sandford, etc. who are now on here trying to be funny?

Maybe I am not in a very patient mood tonight - I don't know, but I do know that close to half of the topics that have been posted on here recently are just annoying me.

If I am the only one who feels this way - please let me know. I can take the criticism and will keep my mouth shut. But please, if you feel the same as me - tell me so I don't think I am the only one!!!!!!

Thank you for you time and consideration on this matter.

I read rockpage faithfully for a few reasons.

Music and friends. Plenty of that here.

Humor. Lots of that here. I really like all the slapstick humor. I like the personalities.

Tech sector. I learned a lot there.

I spend more of my free time reading RP than I do prob anything else. I dont have a prob with it. I can even laugh at the trolling. I gotta be honest, sometimes I laugh harder at the slapstick then I do anything else.

I enjoyed RP more when it was more musician based also Tom, it is quite different than it was a year ago and I don't visit or get involved quite as often. But I should probably not waste as much time on the computer anyway.

I clicked on page 87 below. All the topics were about music. Guys I love music. It took almost a month to fill a page with new topics. Today your topic might me gone at the end of the day. I like the fact that more than music is discussed. I am happy that Sanford doesnt post on PLCB issues. But Too-Tay posted on my topic and I found it to be rather funny. If all I can do or act is be serious, a big part of my personal character is lost.

I am well aware of several problems that have plagued this site recently, and am doing my best to take steps to deal with them. Ron, who owns this site, is busy with work assignments at any given time, and is often not able to monitor this board on a regular basis. Nor should he need to, except that we have several idiots who have been testing the patience of me and all the responsible users of this site recently.

As I’m sure you have seen - just in the past several weeks, I have been forced to lock down a number of threads due to the eruption of flame wars, bickering and related BS. I have also had to delete posts from at least two people who registered onto Rockpage for the apparent sole purpose of attacking their former significant others. We seem to have had a rash of this crap lately. And of course, the flame wars between two specific female posters who can’t resist the urge to try to push each other’s buttons every opportunity they get.

After consulting with Rockpage main man Ron over the weekend, I have been given clearance to take steps to bring order and harmony back to this site, so it can return to being the constructive and productive tool to the area music community it was created and intended to be.

I began the crackdown this week. I am cracking down by enforcing the rules governing this board - rules that everybody posting on here agreed to when they first registered to use this board! My enforcement will include the editing/deletion of posts and threads in violation of the rules, and possible locking of threads as deemed necessary.

Posts personally attacking others are being edited or deleted. And for the two flame war posters eluded to earlier, I do not care “who started” or “who trolled” first. If you attack the other, I’m deleting, no questions asked. I am an equal opportunity enforcer. I don’t care who started the flame wars…I’m finishing them!

I am also deleting posts that attempt to hijack or derail threads, provided I can intercept hijacks before they become too entrenched in the thread. Again, hijacking violates the rules governing this board, so if I see it happening, I will be deleting and taking steps to get threads back on track and topic, where possible and applicable.

Regarding the number of “nonsense” posts (i.e. – the “Assinine Thread” series, and the flare-up of TV character posts in the past day or so) – The rules don’t prohibit non-musical topics and posts, but we (Rockpage admin) do reserve the right to review each post and thread on an individual basis. On one hand, I understand the concerns of people who come here to view music-related topics. But on the other side, I also don’t want people to be afraid to post and express ideas and thoughts, even non-musical or political ones. We will continue to monitor this situation, and take steps on a case by case basis if the clutter problem becomes too bad.

Keep in mind that the football-related threads will probably slow way down after this coming Sunday (just like the political threads diminished after the presidential election in 2004).

Again, Ron and I are doing our best to get this board back to being the productive tool for the music scene it was intended to be. By enforcing the rules as listed in the “Help” forum (http://rockpage.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=20), I’m confident that the problems that have plagued this board lately will be resolved, one way or another.

Jim, I understand everything you wrote.

I do appreciate the slapstick humor as I aforementioned. I believe it makes RP a more fun community. Am I the only that laughed when I saw Cliff Claven joined RP? Norm Peterson? Mr Furley? Really... am I? I really thought it was CREATIVE and FUNNY. Music and its most sincere fans is all about creativity.

Attendance on this side of the mountain is up. I believe there are many reasons for that. I believe it to be some of us are older and wiser and are more capable of putting a better product out there. I also believe some of it is that we do not take ourselves too seriously. Many of us our jokesters and dont fully realize that, so a forum is a good place to figure that out. The 90's "I hate myself and the world should burn" has finally passed. I just dont want it to revert back to the "how to get more ppl to your show" forum. We must learn to laugh, let go, and in the meantime continue supporting each other.

Yes RP is a wonderful musical tool, but it is also a wonderful place to behold a gentleman known as Grammar, and to watch his creative thought process. Perhaps giving ppl like him a forum, gives us the next Jim Morrison.

I am not saying that this site should go unmonitored. I am not saying that if it gets too goofy its a bad thing.

I find the current mix to be satisfying.

Sometimes I enjoy a little political jousting.

I just wish we could separate "chit chat" (politics, sports, TV , etc.) threads from music related threads.

My hats of to the moderators for their hard work.

Whilest the tv dudes were funny at first, it gets old. Especially when we have a whole line-up now. Cheers, Facts of Life, All in the Family....etc.

Kind of hard to keep the flow of threads when interrupted. But that's just my input.

Urbs, it hasn't gone to hell, it's simply gone to "The Dark Side". That's the 1 hit wonder by Eddie and the Cruisers, isn't it? :)

I enjoy the local Music Scene a great deal, try my best to support it in a Positive way, enjoy interacting on here with people I know "so far" (In a week and a 1/2, Infused and I hope Bit*chenWomen1029, finally!!!), even ones I haven't met yet and I also like to laugh. A lot.
Always have, in person even! :D I laughed as hard last night at Cliff, Norm and Archie as at the hacked pix on the "Games" Threads. Even Grammar is a hoot. I'd much rather those fisherpersons if there are to be any. However, I still haven't found a Thread Mr. Furley is in. Back to Reading...and laughing...

I agree with almost everything said so far , but I think I would agree with
Killjingle the most though . I have a huge sense of humor and I find alot of the stuff funny as hell one here! This place makes me feel good after a long night's work when I stop in and see a bunch of funny pics or post replies . I usually do not reply to anything I don't like ie. Football or anything I know absolutly nothing about, there's just no need to . I'm guilty of a couple of things on a few occasions , I admitt it, but aren't we all from time to time ? I think that sometimes things sound even worse when it's typed and the way it's typed IMHO. I try not to ever imagine a person's tone of voice or anything when reading posts ,this can sometimes lead your fingers into typing something other than what you are really think'n. I try to pay attention to the emotiocons in a reply when they are used, that should give you a good idea of one's tone. Thanx to those of you who use them it helps sometimes , really it does. Curse'n is also something you won't see much of in any of my posts either , although, from time to time I might drop the F bomb, I'll try to work on that more in the future. I don't mind dodge'n through topics I have no intrest in, and if I have to dig a little for one, so what, it isn't like I have to drive to town to find it. I don't think I've ever highjacked someone elses thread , if I have ,please let me know and I will apologize.

I recently started a topic about being at a loss for creativity and got some great and inspiring thoughts on the subject and for that I'm very greatful to all who replied even the silly ones, they at least made me laugh a little.
You know what it's funny cause today that problem went away when I realized something, all the inspriation I need has been right in front of me all along........ROCKPAGE ! There is soooooo many little bits and peices of things on here if you choose to see them and hear them! So with that being said , Thanx to all the "REAL ROCKPAGERS" who post here you guys and gals are the best! 8) :D

I will try my best to behave in the future and sorry if I've caused any problems!

Lighten up, people. This site needed some amusement. In fact, this Captain Grammar guy is really making things interesting.

Aside from the questionable use of an ellipsis at the beginning of the second paragraph, the above post was presented in acceptible English.

Interestingly, Bert|Evil used a conjunction — and — to begin this sentence. While many would argue that this is inappropriate, most experts agree that this is acceptible sentence structure for the 21st century.

I would recommend either dropping the ellipsis and capitalizing the "A" in "and" or eliminating the conjunction altogether:

If you're a naysayer, you know from past experience that the novelty will wear off.

You're welcome and thank you for your appreciation for my contributions.

The eclipse, or its synonym "ellipsis", is quite acceptable for today's Internet-driven rhetoric. Since the eclipse represents a suppression in dialog, which is a response in this example, the capitalization of the following word is unnecessary.

I was hoping scrutiny of posts would evenutally inspire dissection and discussion. Your analysis of ellipsis usage for the purpose of illustrating inflection in an Internet forum post is well thought out and quite valid.

Again, Bravo, Bert|Evil.

Rockpage is an interesting community, which contains all kinds of crazy off-beat characters. Personally, I'm not into football, but I've put up with the myriad of football topics that have appeared in the past month or so. I visit Rockpage at least three times a day, and while I only post if something piques my interest, I still make it a point to read most of the threads.

Captain Grammar, do you think that Internet communication has brought about a new culture with its own set of grammatical syntax, or do you instead feel that the Internet has made people lazy with their English skills? Please expound upon this.

Dude, no one on the net uses perfect spelling, and no one will just because you correct us...so stop. You are one of the people that byndrsn is talking about. It was funny about 30 posts ago, but has since then burnt out.

I would make the argument that people have been regressive and complacent in their grammar skills for some time. The widespread usage of Internet forums and other electronic communications has simply made matters more noticeable.

Let’s await C.G.’s dissertation.

You make a good point.

I had three years of formal typing classes, so shooting out a post on a message board takes a few seconds. I often take it for granted that many other people cannot type, so they may use abbreviations, acroymns, etc. when making a post or email.

You know, back in the time before "Hell" (roughly around 1930) tormetors and tormentress' were forced to use such trivial and novel items for use of torture, such as whips, hand knifes, muzzle-loader guns, burnings at the stake, chinese water torture, name-calling, and stoning. This allowed them to commit their acts of torture and pain as per necessity.. They would be able to burn several thousand midgets at the stake using a series of wires, knots, rope, and a chain link fence. They also used stonings to eliminate policital opponents and "enemy combatants" - as much as an inconvenience this was .. it was managed efficiently so that optimum torture, and decimation was planned and carried out.

They also used an assembly line, a good example was during the Inquisition when they would do carnival style torture methods, and buffet style torture. They would take a victim, strap them to a large wheel, spin them around and beat them with a whip while doing so. After that they would tie him to a stake and beat him, and then drag him over hot coals, and then disenbowel him with a wooden spoon. Apparently it wasnt a pleasant experience..

And that was what happened before hell..

** I know Im probably going to catch hell for doing this, and it's not intended to hi-jack or assualt anybody in this thread, but to enlighten and make you laugh. I feel there isn't ENOUGH humor on rockpage, and when me and Norm came to town, everything changed a little for the better. Thank You. **

Keep it Intellegent
