NO Y WOODSTOCK COVERAGE
I'm dissaponted to see that Mr. Price decided not to come out to Y Woodstock on Aug 16th to check out some original talent from all over PA and even an artist from NYC. Every week I look at Jim Price's reviews of weekend shows and it gets to be like a broken record. The same cover bands at the same clubs. Our group was a bit leary about coming all the way out to the Altona area to play. We were warned that probably no one would come to hear us and the others since we are not from the area. We gave you the benefit of the doubt and as usual, no visit and no exposure.
Well, Mr. Professor, you missed one heck of a show. A lot of original talent and a good time had by all. Huge crowd, great cause and much commradery between the bands.
It's just sad that we will never make the trip out west again.

If you read the Weekend Recap for August 18, Ludwigdrummerboy, you would have seen that I was in attendance at a PA Musician staff meeting and picnic that day, which had been on my schedule for at least a full month before Y-Woodstock was even announced. Much as I'd love to be present at two events at once, cloning hasn't been perfected and it is still physically impossible for me to do so. I had already committed to the PA Musician function, and I honored that commitment.
Most bands know that I do get around to covering them if they book several shows in the area and keep informing me about them. Sucks for Illusion Project if you banked all your hopes of coverage on just one show.
I get to as many shows as I can, but I can't be two places at once. And if I've already committed to another event on the same day before you inform me of your event, I honor the first commitment.
If you choose not to make the trip out west again, oh well, your loss...

In Jim's defense, I know for a fact that Pennsylvania Musician Magazine had a meeting in Harrisburg that day and he didn't get back into the area until later in the evening. Jim is just ONE guy. He can't be everywhere. Prof does more for the area music scene than anyone, puts more miles on his car than anyone, and in my personal opinion, deserves more respect, from musicians in particular, than anyone around.
Sorry to hear you're boycotting the area. You're missing out on a great fan base.

Geeze, don't you think that was a bit rude ludwigdrummerboy? JP works his arse off to dedicates his life to music and the local scene. I really think he deserves a little more respect than that. Irregardless to whether you're out of the area or not, if you're a good band, people will come and see you. You, the band, need to pay your dues, just like every other band anywhere, and build that base.

Chill Dude
I want to take a minute and rant which I usually do not do on this forum but when there is injustice I cannot hold my tongue! Ludwig I don't have a clue who you or your band are BUT how dare you bash J.P. ? without the professor Altoona wouldn't even have a music scene he is out every weekend seeing bands, taking pics, doing write up's etc.. on his own time with his own gas and vehicle and that doesn't include the 2 + hours per week for the back yard rocker ( THE ONLY 2 HOUR RADIO SHOW DEVOTED TO LOCAL MUSIC IN PA.) If you think you come into a scene for the first time and conquer it then you're not very experienced in this business and to write it off after 1 visit just helps to prove that point, In your own words there was " a great crowd and fun was had by all" Well then hell man you have every reason to come to the area again alot of us who have been doing this for years realize that those statements are a description of a perfect show. Dude the scene supports those who support the scene just chill and have a good time of it and remember bashing gets you no where...
I'm glad I didn't have to fight in a war, I'm glad I didn't get killed or kill somebody, I hope my kids enjoy the same lack of manhood
I helped put Illusion Project in that show, based on a good demo tape, and some good buzz about the band, and I was the one who suggested this band to the powers that be.
I also tried to make them aware that this is Altoona, a place that's notoriously hard to break into, for various reasons. I say it again and again and again, dues have to be payed. MANY local musicians have music degrees, the locals are not impressed by this. MOST play at least some original music... that's not such a big thing in and of itself, either.
The show inquestion was considered a resounding success, raising more than $7500 for the YMCA. Fact is, Illusion Project was well-liked by those in attendance... of course, it started raining just as IP went on, and folks had been drinking all day anyway, so they were burnt, and the crowd dropped off rather quickly, but those still in attendance dug it, believe me.
In 'Toonatown, however, one gig does not a star make. It takes a few, sometimes a lot, especially for progressive music.
I personally really like the band, great guys, and I still listen to their demo just because I like it. In Jim Price's defense, there was a huge biker run and show that day that Q-94 helped promote, featuring Half Tempted, and the Hurricanes were playing a big outdoor show a few miles away, so Jim would have been extremely busy even if he were in town.
To the guys in Illusion Project: Don't give up on this area based on Jim's inability to cover one show. Hook up with some other progressive bands and play-play-play until folks notice. You guys would likely do very well with The Flame-Sky, Electric Blue, and some of the other local progressive jam bands. Take it from an area veteran, "Ain't no way but the hard way" to get in here, and burning a bridge with the only press in a hundred mile radius, well, that's not a good idea.----->JMS

Not that anyone cares, but I'll throw in my two cents:
About a zillion years ago I set up a show called Malevolent Metal Fest. JP had a prior commitment and couldn't make what ended up being our final show.
We all understood how busy Jim is and never gave it a second thought. The LAST thing we or any other band should do if JP can not attend is blast him, Altoona, the bar, etc just because you feel that you "deserve" attention.
Cut the guy a break. A man can't do everything, and he definitely can't be expected to be every where in the same weekend.
So if your boo-hoo-ing about JP not making it to your show or how "it's just sad that we will never make the trip out west again" then just stay where your from. We don't need you here. JP has been here probably longer than you've been a band and I'm sure will be here after your gone.

For Ludwigdrummerboy...emphasis on boy...
Don't you dare bash Jim Price until you understand what he's done for this area. It's always somewhat dissapointing when he can't make it to a show, but bashing JP will make it a point in stone that he won't come see you. Do you even have ANY clue what he does for live music, not only in Altoona, but in places surrounding our area??
Let me give you an example. The example I'm about to make is I'm sure, in need of updating from the Professor himself, but it was made a few years ago in an issue of The Final Cut, when some "yingyang" bitched about JP not seeing his band...paraphrasing follows...
By my count in Altoona alone, there are some 15-20 bars running live music on the weekend, Friday and Saturday. Let's use 20 for the sake of easy math. That's 40 show opportunities per week already. Now, add in Duncansville, Hollidaysburg, Cresson, Ebensburg, Patton, Tyrone, Huntingdon County, Clearfield County, and Johnstown. Let's say between every one of those locales, there are 50 bars running shows on Friday and Saturday. That's 100 more show opportunities PER WEEK. Jim Price is ONE MAN. And yes, he covers every single one of those territorries for PA Musician and Rockpage. So on a given weekend, if JP keeps his schedule tight, give him a chance to see 4 bands on a Friday, and 4 more on a Saturday. That's 8 shows per week! He's doing all he can! And, by the way, that's not even counting Sunday night shows, or any other night that a band may be playing somewhere unplugged! Count in national band shows, regional band shows, festivals, PA Musician delivery duties, hosting The Backyard Rocker, and working a full-time job, and I'd say that JP goes WAY above and beyond what he could do.
This is the wrong place to pick a fight with Jim Price, son. That man is the KING of live music in Central PA, and there are COUNTLESS musicians who owe their careers playing in bands to him, and would stand in line to shut you up themselves if you bash him. So choose your words carefully. Jim is the single most valuable resource for music in Central PA, and you'd do well to have a glass of SHUT THE HELL UP and remember that.

I can understand being dissapointed because you wanted Jim to show, The disapointment comes from how much his word means in the area and the desire to have Jim write a good article about your band, but like everyone else said the man does ALOT for the area musicians and I'm sure if you played the area steady he would get around to you. I don't think anyone should expect him to jump when they want him to.
With that said, getting mad because he couldn't make it was the wrong approach. I really doubt Jim was sitting in an easy chair drinking a beer or taking a nap. But if he was ....... did you ever think he deserves to do that too.

Over the years I can remember a few times when bands have bashed JP for not being present for a "big show", and I was there for the "yingyang incident". Funny... all of those bands are long gone, and JP rocks on.
tonefight: Maybe JP didn't have an easy chair or nap, but I'm sure he had that beer, and deserved it.
mad hatter: I wouldn't call it "ganging up". We're just showing our support a good friend. JP listens to more original local music than anyone out there and puts it on the air.

another RANT
Ok here it goes !! This may bring some criticism my way but oh well, This is something I feel strongly about and it needs to be said. Anyone who gets on this or any other forum and says anything bad about J.P. is plain and simple AN ASS H_ _ E . and you can quote me on that ASS H_ _ E ! Jim has done more for THE GRIMM than we could thank him for in a lifetime and I'm forever endebted to him for it I would do anything for the guy. Jim is 2 things to me 1.) a friend 2.) a true music lover who helps bands get their due and goes to great lengths to do so. SO drumboy who ever you are stay where you are I'm sure by not coming back to altoona you won't hurt anyone but yourself and your band and after the things you've said here I'm also sure we don't want or need you here anyway.
I'm glad I didn't have to fight in a war, I'm glad I didn't get killed or kill somebody, I hope my kids enjoy the same lack of manhood

Altoona isn't ganging up on anyone....Heck I'm not even from Altoona. heh All we are doing is defending a friend and a person that is respected by the people that know him and what he's done in the name of music.mad hatter wrote:That's Altoona for you, gangin up on an out-of-towner and not digging original music, and that's my two-cents.

Something you seriously need to understand ludwigdrummerboy, and this is going to apply anywhere you go, is you need to pay your dues. Nothing will ever be handed to you on a silver platter.
FIRST, THANKS TO EVERYONE for the kind words and support. It is much appreciated.
I honestly do try to see as many bands and shows as I can. As I mentioned earlier, though, I can only be at one place at a time. There are usually several nights in a given month where there are 5-6 bands playing in the region that I want to go check out, but I can only pick 1 or 2 of them. I only wish I could make my living doing music coverage; but as is, I have to juggle day job duties, personal life, and the other hats I wear with my band coverage duties.
I did want to check out Y-Woodstock, but again, I was already committed to another event that day. Again, I can't be two places at once.
My suggestion to Illusion Project or any other bands who desire coverage: The sooner you notify me of upcoming shows, the better chance I can arrange to check one out. I plan a lot of my band coverage in advance, and the groups who notify me of shows early on have the best shot of getting coverage. And let me know of several show dates, so I can pick one convenient to my schedule. You stand a much better chance of my showing up at a gig if I know about it several weeks or even a month or two in advance, rather than getting a call or email about it the day before the show.
I do try to get around to everybody, but it takes time and the right show and schedule to fall into place sometimes. Be patient, and keep informing me of shows; I eventually will show up.

I will certainly vouch for JP. As a very new band we wanted Jim to see us. A few weeks before our first gig at City Limits I asked JP if he would be back at City Limits for our show. Hw told me he would do his best and sure enough, during our 3rd set he showed up. He wrote us up here on the Rockpage weekend recap and was even MUCH kinder than I expected.
So, thanks again JP
