Creative Rut

Post by RAM Z »

When you get into a rut try'n to write new guitar riffs or a song , what do you do for inspration ? Every now and again I get into a creative rut and can't seem to get anything out of my head and usually I do a little fish'n to clear my head but, it's winter time now so that's kinda out of the question.

I'm interested to find out what others do for inspration. 8)

Don't force it... just go about your life. Inspiration can be found in the most overlooked areas.

I knew some one would say ice fishing! l.o.l :)

I never went ice fish'n before and it's strange cause I just had a friend ask me to go the other day. Maybe that would help Rob! 8)

My kids and job have me a lil' stressed out lately and I normally don't let those things get to me but ,now it's starting to affect my creativity a little cause I'm letting it bother me more than it should. Three girls in the house argue'n about everything all the time is a bit much to take for any guy. Sometimes beans just don't work!

Thanx Bert ! That is mostly what I do but, it doesn't seem to be work'n this time.

Dude, i know what you're talking about, ive been in this rut for a long time. It seems like my life as of right now is stale and nothing good or bad is coming from it. I actually found inspiration for lyrics in a fortune cookie one time. I'll most likely play it when im on the backyard rocker on april 16th. It was pretty funny, cuz i didnt even want to open the cookie, then i had a second thought (being the fat guy that i am, i cant pass up a cookie, no matter how much it tasted like cardboard) and to my suprise, it had a really kick ass saying in it. So...inspiration can come from just about anywhere.

When I was playing more than I am now, I would just do a bunch of riffs. If I liked something out of it I would record it ...

I would suggest just take it easy and don't try to force it. If the ideas aren't happening, step away from it for a little while and come back to it later, that works for me when I'm trying to write articles. Sometimes my best ideas hit me when I'm doing something else, like housework or taking a walk.

J.P. I've tried that too.

I have millions well not really millions but, alot of great ideas and have some very cool lyrics written down . All day at work I keep getting ideas for the music in these songs and when I try to play it when I get home my brain won't let my hands get it on the guitar. Sometimes it's like I'm starting to learn guitar all over again if you know what I mean. Maybe I just need and old fashion cheering up. I don't get this way too often so all of you guys are help'n alot with your suggestions so please keep them come'n .

Thanx alot,
J.R.

You guys ROCK! :D

 RAM Z, duuuude, I don't know about the creating Music end of it at all, but lyrics wise, you have the makings of tune right here!

Relax, force yourself to clear your mind and only think of one thing, or as some call it, Meditate...all the rest will eventually flow. If you can make it, it would be awesome to finally meet you at the Jam. :)

My way out of a rut has beent to learn something new. And I don't mean if you're a metal guitarist go learn a new Slayer song. I mean go learn some jazz, classical, country, something that you don't know that well. Push yourself to go beyond your limits, you'll soon see your rut disappear.

Maybe try writing song about the Job, Kids, House Stress Etc... I lived With three females Wife, Daughter and StepDaughter and it was hell. Lasted a year but got a few songs written out of the situation. Putting the problems on paper sort of relieved some of the stress... Good Luck!

Back in 1986, I met a guy who taught at the Lancaster Conservatory who told me about this guy named Brian Eno, who had a card system worked out called, "Oblique Strategies." It's a deal where you shiffle cards with instructions or odd words on them, and it forces you to approach creative problems differently. Then, out of the blue, I get a call from England, it's Brian Eno. I swear to you, I had no idea who he was. We spoke for maybe 20 minutes, and he struck me as WAAAY beyond the level I work at, and honestly, pretty weird. Only when I told someone awhile later, did I find out that he was a founding member of Roxy Music, and worked with U2 and Talking Heads, and all these major acts. Turns out the guy in Lancaster was working with Robert Fripp, and that's how he got Mr. Eno my number. A brush with greatness, and I was utterly clueless as usual.
Anyway, the Oblique Stragegies have helped me out of a jam once or twice. Here's the link to an online version:

http://stoney.sb.org/eno/oblique.html

I also keep a "hookbook" like many pro writers. Any time I get a snippet, I write it down (believe me, if I don't, in 5 minutes, it's GONE), and put it in the book. I also keep a pen and pad on my nightstand... I once had a dream with this awesome song, and by morning... gone.
Good luck, man. Let it flow.-------->JMS

Yo, John I have that same problem with dreams. Problem is I can never find a pen and paper because my kids never put a friggin' thing back where it should be. :D
