Where do you get your drums?

Post by Banned »

Here's a general question to anyone who does basic home studio recording with a computer. Where do you get your drums, aside from actually having a real drummer?

I'm looking to put some tunes together, and want a drum solution that's both easy to use and flexible. Basic drum loops are nice for jamming over, but I want to have enough control to tell Mr. Virtual Drummer exactly what to play and when.

You need a software MIDI/Audio sequencer and some kind of MIDI drum machine or sampler with natural sounding drum samples. Then you can make it play anything you want, exactly the way you want it.

You can buy software and hardware based synths and samplers for your computer. I'm not too keen on software based ones because of the extreme latency vs the digital audio which can be as much as 1/2 second.

Most companies have gotten away from making high quality synths in PCI card format and instead, produce table top modules that you control via midi. For hardware, I'd wait until next week when the NAMM show is over and all the new products are shown. You also may catch a blowout of an older model that works just fine.

For a software sequencer that does multi-tracks with midi and audio, I strongly suggest the PowerTracks Pro that I mentioned in earlier posts. They have it on sale from Dec 1 to today for $29 and then it goes back to $49 til next December. It is infinitely cheaper than Cakewalk/Sonar, infinitely easier to use and comes with more features, including a T.C. Helicon harmony plug-in. I own both of these programs and didn't bother putting Cakewalk/Sonar back on my PC.

Here is a link to the PTPro page and the $29 special:
