What Are Your Favorite Guitar Solos?

Post by ToonaRockGuy »

DISCLAIMER: This is NOT a thread to argue about what's "best". There is no "best". So don't even start.
------------------------------------------------
What are some of your favorite guitar solos in songs? It can be shredding, something that just grabs you by the throat, or something that moves you to tears.

I'll start with a few of my favorites:

"Let It Be" - The Beatles. Simple solo, but powerful as hell, and timeless.
"Leave My Little Girl Alone" - SRV. 'Nuff said.
"Stillborn" - Black Label Society. One of my faves of Zakk's solos.
"Bat Country" - Avenged Sevenfold. The return of the twin guitar attack!
"Devil's Daughter" - Ozzy. Another one of my faves from Zakk Wylde.
"Cemetary Gates" - Pantera. Dimebag at his finest.
"Cliffs Of Dover" - Eric Johnson. If you haven't heard it, find it!
"Sweet Child O' Mine" - GNR. Love the power build-up in this solo!
"Maggot Brain" - Funkadelic. Totally and utterly FUNKY.
"Whipping Post" - Allman Brothers. Again, 'nuff said.
"Constipated Duck" - Jeff Beck. Unreal.

Let's hear it!

Here's one im partial too, its from our last CD from an instremental Jeff wrote called Sabra. We were in the studio and Felix wasnt sure what he was going to do in this part. Track rolled and he nailed it, not flashy, technichal or shred but it fit perfect. Thats what i like in leads, when it fits the tune.

Listen to 30 sec clip here..

Under a Glass Moon - Dream Theater (John Petrucci)

I have a lot more, but that's my favorite solo of all-time.

Sure. But don't start getting off topic about the way it's played and how YOU want it to be played. That's not the point of the topic. The question is: What are some of your favorite guitar solos?

did you read what i say about pitch? is that right word? do some GEET players stay or prfer certain "pitch" ranges. could that piece by felix be played at a higher overall pitch? ALL NOTES kicked up one notch so to speak so it pierces your consioisness more?

*sigh* It doesn't matter how it was played. It doesn't matter if you "want" it to be played differently to "pierce your conciousness". It is what it is. Just answer the friggin' question. Or don't, I don't care.

Fine: What you want is the solo in the song to be played higher on the fretboard, because you prefer solos that are in the higher octaves. But again, that's not the topic of the thread. There, I answered your question.

i apreciate your answer, thank you! i think felix likes to play a little lower on the fretboard (am i right?), i've been to a ton of shows and that's why a certain 'edge" can be missing for me.

i think i just learned smthg great here about music and myself. thank you thank you thank you!

Good Topic.....

SRV - Crossfire - the outro solo is kick ass

Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb - Gilmour's Strat tone is amazing

Hendrix - Little Wing - just a great melodic lick

GNR - Estranged - Slash's eighteen solos on this track are all amazing (and I realize there weren't 18, and I feel it necessary to put in this disclaimer since Rockpage has now developed a sarcasm filter)

Ozzy (Randy Rhoads) - Mr. Crowley - a wickedly melodic solo

Van Halen - Dreams - hate the song, but I love that second tapping solo....

.....and I suck at solos......Tyson - Third Standard

Those are all awesome solos, especially the SRV (that song was actually written by Double Trouble), the Hendrix and the GNR.

Fleetwood Mac LIVE version of I'm So Afraid is my favorite guitar solo.
Others are Europa (Santana), Maggot Brain, and a live version of Wings My Love, granted a just OK song but has this really tasty guitar solo on the live version.
Please don't use the word Geet.

I could take several days listing all the guitar solos I like, but for a few that quickly come to mind:

Gary Moore's solo on "End Of The World" off Corridors of Power
John Sykes' solo on Thin Lizzy's "Thunder and Lightning"
Steve Zodiac's solos on Vardis' "100 M.P.H." (I know it's obscure and an import album, but it's still one of my all time favorites)
Zakk Wylde's solo on Ozzy Osbourne's "No More Tears"
Eddie Van Halen's solo on "Cabo Wabo"

That's just the tip of the iceberg, though...I could list many, many more!
