I am undecided if Euro or American metal is "better", but alot of good bands have come from over seas such as Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Hammerfall, Saxon and such as Black Sabbath who are originally from Birmingham England. Bands that have acquired fame, fortune and respect!
Especially Judas Priest who are also from Birmingham England and another one of my all time favorites, ACDC, formed in Sidney Austrailia in "73". I agree with Rob the Drummer! Euro is more complex, but I am sure you have heard more Euro Metal than you probably realize!

NO PROBLEM HERE HURRICANE! I'd jump on a chance like that!

But there is a difference between "Americanized" Euro and regular Euro.

Very true~! Alot of the bands are still over there trying to get out and bring it here where they can attract more attention and money! No doubt that is what makes them "Americanized"!

I don't really see a big diff. A lot of the influences for american metal bands came from euro metal bands. Quite frankly, I think they are the same.

both american metal and european metal kick ass. in europe, they seem to be more into metal though.
what i dont really like is when american metal bands try to copy the "youre-a-pee-in" metal style. it sounds like they try to hard. anyway, both kick ass. try some BLACK metal.

I'd be a little more specific. There has always been great metal and some of the greatest guitarists coming out of the Dutch and German countries.

There are exceptions, but Britain tends to have more punkish stuff.

Portugal, Spain, France and Italy are all gay.

The Ukraine makes good dress pants.

It's pretty equal from a strict metal standpoint. Case in point:

Death Metal - America wins (Cannibal Corpse, DEATH, Obituary, Morbid Angel, etc.)..even with bands like Meshuggah and Arch Enemy you can't fuck with that.

Black Metal - Europe wins (Cradle, Emporer, Dimmu Borgir, Old Man's Child, etc.) - to me that equals two votes because black metal is my favorite...hahaha... \m/

dead draw from an extreme metal standpoint.

With bands like Slayer, MegaDeth, (old) Metallica, Testament - America gets the nod for thrash.

As for straight metal, I'm not up on it enough to make a judgement call, perhaps another could take this post from here...

But don't forget that a lot of the Melodic Deathmetal stuff comes out of Gothenburg.

Yeah but, still America gets it IMO...The kings of death metal (of which I am making a wide assumption of it including all types) are mainly American which is why I say it.

Honestly I am more a fan of melodic death metal (with the exception of Deicide, Malevolent Creation, and Cryptopsy) and my preference is European but, I think America gets the nod for assumed creation (Death) and having the kings of the genre.

Note * - I only say assumed creation because I have always thought of Death as the beginning of death metal. I don't know if this is correct or not.

I tend to think that Euro metal is better than American Metal. In Europe, a lot of the more popular metal bands still believe in the power of melody. Bands like Stratovarius and Edguy have that heavy edge, but keep the melodic part intact. Nightwish and Gamma Ray are another couple bands that are melodically heavy. I like bands that can pound, but also halve that kind of over-the-top theatrical aspect going for them in their vocals. It's just a shame that a lot of the Euro bands don't get a fair shake a lot of the time over here. Edguy toured here with Hammerfall, I believe, but otherwise, Prog Power in Atlanta is about the only place around that you get a chance to see Euro metal in all its glory.

Most metal bands nowadays are heavy, using crunching guitars, brutal drumming, and the vocals can't be understood without a lyric sheet.

Bands like Edguy, Balance Of Power, and Nightwish play music that has a heavy feel to it, but the vocals are still clear, like glam metal. There's lots of harmony in power metal, and it's right on the button!

What I mean is basically what Kevin said. Melodic metal has all the power of standard metal, but the vocals are musically more planned out and elaborate, as opposed to, say, Six Feet Under or Cannibal Corpse, where it's gutteral growls and screams. There is actually a person singing low, middle and high harmony in varying degrees. To get an idea of what I mean, look up Edguy's "Down to the Devil." That's what I'm talking about.

My vote is for European Metal. I'm a big fan of The Pretty Maids, Sinner, Helloween, Saxon, Pink Cream 69, Primal Fear, etc... Not to mention the great bands already mentioned. (Edguy, BOP, Nightwish, Hammerfall, etc.) And Gamma Ray put on one of the best shows that I have EVER seen! I am obviously a fan of Melody, though. If you've ever had a chance to see any European Metal shows, I also think that you'd agree that on most levels they are far superior to American Metal Shows. The Musicianship, showmanship, and overall performance is just, IMO, better. Many of the bands that are "American" metal have been extremely influenced by bands from oversees. And yeah, America is where the $$$ is but I hate it when a European band I love comes to America...they are, IMO, typically ruined. And lonewolf, I don't think that all bands from Portugaul, Spain, Italy, etc... are gay. I love MOONSPELL. There is some great metal from Finland too!!! I've said this before but since Victor Synn brought it up I'll say it again, if you get a chance, you definitely should check out PROG POWER in Atlanta. Some European Metal at its finest!!!

I love Moonspell too. Wolfheart was their best album, IMO. I also like the Gathering a lot.

Not a big fan of the Gathering, but that's just me. I still think better than most American metal. I will say that Moonspell was really disappointing live. I hate to say it but they were....their cds kick ass though. Just my opinion.
