Local shredder poll

Post by Banned »

A little while ago there was a very interesting topic on what is a shredder and what is not.

I think an informative follow up would be to have a rockpage viewer poll on who is your favorite local shredder.

I would like to get suggestions for favorite local shredders, and then from that list, depending on everyone's input, we can start a poll.

Lets start with shredders. then we can go to others if this is cool, like, favorite blues guitarists, rocker, metal, acoustic.......

then go to favorite drummer, bass, singer....or whatever idea anyone else thinks is ok.

He can shred ... he can rock out ... he can bust out a phat blues riff ... and he's one helluva cool person ...

I'm biased, but my favorite area guitarist is "old sKool" ... Mr. Kenny Murdick ...

I'm going with Jimi Hatt. I'm biased as well, but other people have dropped his name in another thread too. I've seen him play everything from blues riffs to Iron Maiden solos and the guy has chops on anything he plays.

I know of a local shredder that was at the top of his game in the early 90's
His name is Dennis Sabo a.k.a "Kango"
This dude could play Yngwie Malmsteen in his sleep.
Then turn around and bust out some Stevie Ray Vaughn note for note.
Then play brutal death metal with wicked sweeps and fast rhythms.
he taught me a bunch of Satch and Vai stuff and I would just sit in awe on how he could pick this stuff up so quickly and play it so perfectly. It's like he didn't even have to try.
all this before he was 18 years old.
Unfortunately he succumbed to the needle and lost it.
My friends and I tried several times to bring him back from the dark side but to no avail.
From what I hear he hasn't even picked up a guitar in years.
Sad but true.

As far as shredders that still have it my vote is for Punkinhead.
just listen to his solo stuff
'nuff said.

Jay Snyder of pivot is unreal. The stuff they play doesn't really showcase his talent but i've seen him rip out some amazing shit.

and on the biased note. Scott Rigo of Beneath The Shadows :D check him out if you get a chance

Not sure if any of you get down Bedford-way very often to check out bands, but Jeff Eaton is one of the best shredders around down in these parts.

I second undercoverJoe's nominations and also one of Viva la Pelt's. I heard House of Cain do several tunes and was saying things to Marina about them and Jason Straw like she was to me about Jason Feathers the first time she heard him and The Flame Sky play. :)

Jason Feathers of The Flame Sky.

Scott Botticher of The Grimm.

I would have to 2nd Brad Kensinger, now in New York shredding in a band called Kavorkian. Also, I have been in awe of Charlie Napolitano,ex-Dragon Fire lead guitarist. I would love to see these two in a band together....They could shred till your heart bleedz...

scott bush of one gun salute is outstanding, but incredibly ugly. jay snyder of pivot is also something else on the guitar, but an unsavory character. guess you can't have everything.

Haven't seen any around here since Jeff Wallach. RIP.

edit:

I forgot about Tommy Brown, even though I have only seen him at the music store.

Thanks Jason, you are no slouch on the fretboard yourself,as far as my being incredibly ugly-won't argue with ya on that one! That's why I have long hair,it's my curtain that I can hide behind!!

Also,we can't forget Tommy Brown at the Music Emporium and the late Jeff Wallack(RIP)

A lot of great ones already have been named... one that hasn't is Tom Brown (edit: oops, OneGun just did mention Tom). Check out the massively bitchen shredding on his Pensive Fear CDs. Another that hasn't been named is Tim Mann (Black Angel, Manndrake).

ugly

Post by tornandfrayed »

So, I am wondering if "ugly" and having great guitar skills have some type of weird correlation. I am thinking specifically of both Jason Straw ( House of Cain ) and Scott Bush ( One Gun Salute ). These guys both jam incredily but they are both ugly as sin! Also I would be leary of leaving them alone with any pets.... I trust them both with my kids but pets are another story.

Really, these guys rock! The new House of Cain CD is liable to be something special. We will see!

As far as Scott Bush goes he is by far the best pure shredder that I have played with. You guys want to see some old school come and check him out.

Wow, like I expected, lots of replys. I might offer a suggestion and could use some help.

I hardly ever get to hear any J-town and Cambria Co. players. And I bet the same for Cambria Co. people hardly get to hear Blair Co. players. And I think some more counties are being represented here.

If we start a viewer poll, it would only be fair to vote if you have heard all of th guitarists.

How about we organize this into counties:

Blair

Cambria

Beford and Huntingdon and any others I don't recognize here.

So---Could someone help by starting to list some of the nominees by county, and then start a poll?

One suggestion is to have a shredd-off, maybe by county, city or something.

The only bands I ever saw in J-town were on a Saturday in June of 2004. :) (House of Cain plays in Altoona.) Is it possible that anyone has seen all of the nominees? Other than the exalted Professor, of course!

Although I never got to hear him play other than a recording over the radio and tunes he played on, on a CD, I've heard some great tales of Jeff Wallach...not only of the Gift of his playing, but I've also heard some very comical tales...the headlight one I've been able to relate to, not by choice, mind you! :) I say the legend lives on...

To me it's not about being a better guitar player than the next guy,it's not a competition in my book.I feel you can always learn something from someone else. There will always be someone that can play better no matter who you are or where you're from.
