Penguinz might be leaving Pitt ??
These rumors are flying around that the Penns might be leaving Pitt by 2007. I heard it from a couple of family members in Pittsburgh. Any truth to this ?? Or has anyone else heard about this ??
I hope it is a false lie. I love hockey, I finally got to watch the Penns play on saturday. The first game I saw this season, of course they lost. I don't want them to leave .. But with the way the city has been busting Mario around, I wouldn't blame him if he did ..

Mario commented last week that it wasn't looking good for the Penguins remaining in Pittsburgh for the 2007 season, due to the politics regarding the funding of a new arena for the team. The speculation is that Kansas City might get the Pens if Pittsburgh can't hold on to them.
I'm hoping that Pittsburgh and Mario can work things out. If he and the Pens leave Pittsburgh, he could become Pittsburgh's version of Art Modell moving the Browns out of Cleveland.

Just read an article on Post Gazette's web site saying that someone is putting up $290 million. I'm not a good reader, so I can't give details.

If they leave, I'll state now, that i WILL NEVER like the Flyers!!!!

I had a thought that if the penns do leave they will get another team in there. But that is hard to say ..
@Mikey Wax - People have already tried to put up their own money to pay for a new arena. They got turned down. Apearently the city didn't like the design plans or something .. I also don't think the slot machine scheme will go threw. I don't beleive PA really wants anything to do with that .. I can see it helping a little, but in the same turn I can see it hurting as well. They are taking to much oppomistic thinking points on it. They seem to feel that it will bring them more than it could actually bring them. They do have a good idea with what they are proposing, as far as the shopping centers and such.
If they do leave I will never be a flyers fan, I hate any team that comes from philly. I'll probably switch to my second favorites. The Maple Leaves, and Bruins ..

You're totally right, Mikey. Here's the quote from the opening of the story:Mikey Wax wrote:But I think that is still banking on the slots going though.
"Penguins officials announced at a news conference this afternoon that Isle of Capri would handle the casino end of its proposal if the team obtains the one slots license available in Pittsburgh.
Someone better start praying for some divine intervention for that single license that's available.

Dood...

The crappiest part of this is is that the Pirates got a new stadium and haven't had a winning season in 13 years, and probably won't for sometime. With hockey having the salary cap and Craig Patrick making the moves for the Pens, they have a real shot of being a contender real soon but, still can't get a new arena....
If youth knew; if age could.

What ever happened to that idea?? When I last heard, the people of Pittsburgh were voting to put the casino in Station Square (which would be better, I must admit).Mikey Wax wrote:But I think that is still banking on the slots going though.
There’s another problem with the Hockey Arena/ Casino concept. Hartford tried something similar in 1994 with a shopping mall, and… the Whalers were in Carolina soon after. If you’ve been to Hartford recently, you’d know that the mall isn’t doing very good, either.
So, would this Arena/ Casino concept work in the long run? I highly doubt it!!

It's all based on Demographics. That's not saying it will work. But, they never know until they try. If it fails then they can find some other use for the buildings ...AtoMikEnRtiA wrote:f.sciarrillo wrote:yeah but if casinos and shopping malls dont go well in connecticut.. the richest damn state in the country.. do you expect them to work in pennsylvania?Bert|Evil wrote: What ever happened to that idea?? Tourism is one factor, but that novelty would fizzle in under 3 years (look at when they build a new restaurant in Johnstown).f.sciarrillo wrote:It's all based on Demographics. The people from Pittsburgh would have to support it, as well. Pittsburgh is a very economically repressed city, so economically repressed people will be broke with gambling addictions in due time, maybe to the point that their blowing their paychecks.

It is true about gambling anywhere it is. I'm not saying I agree with putting a casino in the city, to tell the truth I would rather they didn't. More so for the fact that it can breed more problems then just addictions to a point of using your whole pay check. They are discussing other ways of putting the arena in that is away from the casino ploy. We will have to wait and see what happens ..Bert|Evil wrote:Tourism is one factor, but that novelty would fizzle in under 3 years (look at when they build a new restaurant in Johnstown).f.sciarrillo wrote: It's all based on Demographics. Here's what I'm getting at... Pittsburgh (which isn't much different from Murtha Country) doesn't need anymore false hope, simply because false hope has been the proverbial carrot on the end of a stick since the mid 80's. It would be nice for a few years, but based upon other ventures, it would do more damage than good.
