Thoughts and well wishes for Erin Holland
Doctors amputated the lower right leg of 17-year-old Altoona resident Erin Holland Tuesday, two days after she was struck by a car in the parking lot of the Ponderosa restaurant.
A hospital spokesperson said she's in stable condition and while efforts were made to save her leg, they were unable to reconstruct it, forcing them to amputate just below the right knee. She will recover, but her life is forever changed.
Especially now, during this holiday season, let's all keep this young lady in our thoughts.

That's what she said.

From what I understand, the young girl was walking to her car and a woman in a car was trying to brake, but she accidentally slammed on the gas instead. She hit 2 cars and a pole and she pinned Ms. Holland up against a parked car.AtoMikEnRtiA wrote:my question is this - if this happened at ponderosa by the mall - how did it happen? im asking this seriously, because being down in lebanon county, i only know what i read on wtajtv.com and id like to know what happened..

I work with a guy who's son date's Erin, from what he told me(from what his boy said) is that this driver was on the cell phone and when she hit Erin, she had her pinned at the drive wheel and then was giving the car throttle( to get it "unstuck"),obviously not realizing the teenage girl's leg was being destroyed by the spinning tire. He said she's doing ok ,all things considered. Her leg was amputated below the knee, wow, only 17 years old. I think these shopping mall and Wal-Mart parking lots are more dangerous than the highways, just go to the Altoona Wally World and watch ppl fly through the lot,not even goin in the travel lanes, they have no idea what's going on around them, they are always is a fuckin hurry and innocent ppl pay the price.
It's just an idea now, And no I'm not trying to be some hero but I was thinking maybe we could get a few band together and do a Jam session somewhere for her. Some place she could come and just get her mind off somethings. You no what I mean. Anyone have any ideas. I will also look around. Let me no as well If anyone thinks this is a good idea or not. Terrible that Logan Township police didn't even site the driver with a violation. Parking lots are private property and it seems the law has no jurisdiction.
People drive thru these strip malls like they are cruising down I99 or flying thru a farm field ignoring yellow lines, other vehicles and sadly people.
There has been many a time I've had to run and dodge crazy drivers while trying to get into a store especially during the holidays.
I think signs should be posted in parking lots designating a 5 MPH speed limit and the police should be able to enforce moving violations just like public roads.
I don't know all the details but I feel sad and upset about this incident, particularly if nothing is done about the reckless driver. Looks like accidents, which happen on private property, end up in civil court.

One of my biggest gripes in the world! I hate when ppl drive across the parking lot. I think you're right Scott.onegunguitar wrote:I think these shopping mall and Wal-Mart parking lots are more dangerous than the highways, just go to the Altoona Wally World and watch ppl fly through the lot,not even goin in the travel lanes, they have no idea what's going on around them, they are always is a fuckin hurry and innocent ppl pay the price.
It makes me sick to think that this damn lady never even recieved a ticket. Thats total bullshit. This young girl is now going to go through many changes in her life that someone else has caused because of stupidity.I no accidents happen but this sounds like something that could have been prevented. I agree that Pennsylvania should have a law that you cannot use a cell phone while you are driving.

You don't have to worry about the lady not getting a ticket. She won't be able to find an insurance company for an affordable price after the one she has forks out the payment thats coming up.Asundor wrote:It makes me sick to think that this damn lady never even recieved a ticket. I drive a lot with my job and we get lots of safe driving ed, and I always remember 1 fact,
50% of all accidents happen in parking lots.
90% of those happen when you are backing out of you place. I was nailed by a little ole 80 yr. old lady doing just this.
Our company wants us to always use a parking place where you can pull out and not back out. You may have to park farther away to find a pull out parking slot, but it will reduce the chance of getting nailed by 80 year old ladies.
None or this helps that poor young girl. I am sorry for her.
