Song lyrics that don't make sense

Post by dick_johnson232 »

A couple of friends of mine that i work with in the morning were listening to the radio. And we heard the new darkness song.

He says "I got a one way ticket to hell in back"

I am no genius but wouldn't that be a round trip ticket instead of a one way ticket. I don't know we were really bored at work today and started talking about song lyrics that don't make any sense does anyone else know any?

Why Yes:

Fall Mountains Just don't Fall On Me. - Jimi Hendrix...

Of course I don't want this to turn into a Left/Right Wing WWF Free for all so I guess he meant Mountains and not the current day establishment government.

I think a lot of lyrics don't make sense. Just like the way ordinary people talk sometimes.

I thought Who will stop the rain, by CCR, was a song about H2O the first few times I heard it.

Sometimes I think some senseless lyrics gives the listener a chance to make their own Interpretations, just like everyone gets a different meaning/feeling from looking at a painting.

One of the first times I heard Pearl Jam's "Ten" (the whole album), I can remember saying to my friend who'd brought the CD over, "These lyrics - they don't make any sense, yet they hang together somehow - how the hell do you write stuff like this?" Some of it is a bit clearer now, and some parts more than others, but there are still moments where it just doesn't seem to have a clear meaning, yet it does seem to hang together somehow.

As long as they "mean" something to the person that wrote them, it's cool. Some interviewer asked D.D. Verni about some Overkill lyrics, and D.D. said that sometimes he looks at Blitz and says, "what the fuck are you talkin about? But they mean something to him."

Alot of my favorite bands have some strange lyrics. Overkill, Led Zep, and even Dirty Looks. "Hot flash, jelly roll. Slide it over to my side...?"

I guess, as long as it SOUNDS COOL! 8)

But today you just read that the man was shot dead
By a gun that didn't make any noise
But it wasn't the bullet that laid him to rest was
The low spark of high-heeled boys

this is from traffics low spark of high heeled boys must have been written when steve winwood was tripping on acid

Sometimes rock lyrics are meant to elicit a purely emotional response, or spark the listener's imagination, as opposed to words that rhyme well, or tell a story. Sometimes the writer was tripping.
Oh, and Joe... Micheal Jackson has actually written some great songs, even when you take away the beat. I heard an Americana cat named Robbie Fulkes do "Billie Jean" with a 4-piece country band... you could actually hear the lyrics... I didn't even recognize the song until they got to the chorus, and the storyline was really engaging. He also wrote "Ben" and "She's Out Of My Life," both of which are excellent songs from a songwriter's standpoint... beautiful melodies and memorable lyrics.
Line that doesn't make sense? Garth Brooks, "The River." "...Like a bird upon the wind, these waters are my sky..." Talk about mixed metaphors!------>JMS

Songcrafter, I is my inability to actually understand the gooved one's voacal delivery. I always had trouble with that.

Now when Weird Al Yankovic parodied Micheal's song, I understood all of those words and laughed my ass off.

For me it is not just Michael, I have a very bad ear for many lyrics. Maybe it s been listening to loud rock and roll for 35 years.

sometimes the lyrics are already written before the music is, then instead of changing the words so they make sense they just make them fit in to the music however possible. i know of a band that did that. and in that case the singer used his poetry and made it work. on the bands site they used to show the poem in the lyrics section and it took me a while to figure out that everything was rearranged. but when you read the poem it made more sense than when you listened to what the song said. but yeah sometimes lyrics make no sense at all. like jet - cold hard bitch. sholdnt the chorus lyrics and verse lyrics be related in some way?
